IS THE SECOND COMING OF JESUS SUPPORTED BY THE

Q’URAN?
From the divine scriptures (eg: Torah, Injeel and Qur’an) we learn that it’s always been the
case that Allah informs/foretell the believers about any major developments or events that
may arise in the future which would affect the believers drastically in the matters of their
faith. This is done mainly to prepare the minds of the believers before the predicted event
actually occur. Nothing is left to chance and there can be no excuses from believers after
such clear evidences are shown. For instance, Allah foretold in the Torah and in the Gospels
about the advent of Prophet Muhammed (pbuh)

“Those who follow the messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find mentioned in
their own- In the Torah and the Gospels- For he commands them what is just and forbids
them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good and prohibits them from what is
bad. He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes that are upon them. So
it is those who believe in him, honour him, Help him, and follow the light which is sent
down with him- It is they who will prosper. (007:157)

The aim and purpose of this foretelling was to help the future believers to believe in and to
support the prophet and to render him help. The same idea is further laid out elsewhere in
the Qur’an.

“Behold ! Allah took the covenant of the prophets, Saying: “I give you A Book and Wisdom;
Then comes to you A messenger, confirming what is with you; Do you believe in him and
render him help.” Allah said: “Do you agree, and take this my covenant as binding on you?”
They said: “We agree.” He said: “Then bear witness, And i am with you Among the
witnesses.” (003:081).

Here too, the purpose is the same i.e. to believe and support the messenger who comes
after them confirming what is already with them. Jesus (pbuh) too foretold to the Children
of Israel about the advent of Prophet Muhammed (pbuh).

“And remember , Jesus, The son of Mary, said: “O Children of Israel I am the messenger of
Allah to you, Confirming The Torah before me, and giving Glad tidings of a messenger to
come after me, Whose name shall be Ahmad. But when he came to them with clear signs,
They said, “This is Evident sorcery”. (061:006)

In a similar manner, the popular muslim belief that Jesus (pbuh) will return to earth near the
End of the World to establish peace and justice needs to be verified and validated through
the Qur’an. Since the Qur’an is the Criterion between right and wrong, the furqan , we need
to explore through the Qur’an to find out if there is any mention, any clues, about jesus’
(pbuh) return to Earth or second coming. If this belief is true and valid , then Allah would’ve
clearly stated elsewhere in the Qur’an, so that the believers can expect him in full faith
based on clear proofs and when he actually returns they can believe in him and render him
help.
WHAT DOES THE Q’URAN SAY?
EVIDENCE 1
TAWAFFU AND RAFA

The following verse clearly stipulates that Jesus would be caused to die FIRST and then raised (to a
high station).

Note two key Arabic words:

(i) Mutawafeeka - Root: W-F-Y (Meaning to die or Death)

(ii) Rafiuka - Root: Raffa (To be raised to a high station)

003:055

Lo! God said: "O Jesus! Verily, I shall cause thee to die (MUTAWAFEEKA), and shall exalt thee unto
Me (RAFIUKA), and cleanse thee of [the presence of] those who are bent on denying the truth; and I
shall place those who follow thee [far] above those who are bent on denying the truth, unto the Day
of Resurrection. In the end, unto Me you all must return and I shall judge between you with regard
to all on which you were wont to differ.

(i) Root word: - W-F-Y

Tawaffa - Cause to Die, Take soul in Death or Sleep, in completeness.

This root word and its derivates have been used numerous times in the Holy Q’uran to signify
death or the removal of the soul at death.

Tawaffaa (prf 3rd. p. m. sing. V.): He causes to die.

Tawaffat (prf 3rd. p. f. sing. V.): They take away the soul.
Tawaffaitanii (prf. 2nd. p. m. sing. V.): You caused me to die.
Tatawaffaa (imp. 3rd.p.f.sing. V.): She causes to die.
Yatawaffaa (imp. 3rd. p. m. sing. V.): He causes to die.
Tawaffanii: Let me die; Let it be that I die.
Yutawaffaa (pp. 3rd. p. m. sing. V.): He has died.
Yutawaffauna (pip. 3rd. p. m. plu. V.): They die.
Mutawaffiika (ap-der. m. sing. V.): Cause you to die a natural death.
Yastaufuuna (prf 3rd. p. m. plu. X ): They take exactly the full.

Here is the usage in the Q’uran for the verb Tawaffa:

perf. act. 4:97, 5:117, 6:61, 47:27

impf. act. 4:15, 6:60, 7:37, 8:50, 10:46, 10:104, 13:40, 16:28, 16:32, 16:70, 32:11, 39:42, 40:77
impv. 3:193, 7:126, 12:101
impf. pass. 2:234, 2:240, 22:5, 40:67
pcple. act. 3:55

Some examples:

002.234 (Part) “Such of you as die (Tawafuna) and leave behind them wives, they (the wives) shall
...”
002.240 (Part) “(In the case of) those of you who are about to die (Tawafuna) and leave behind ...”

002.281 (Part) “And guard yourselves against a day in which ye will be brought back to Allah
(Tawafa)...”

004.015 (Part)“houses until death take them (Tawafuna) ...”

004.097 (Part) “Lo! as for those whom the angels take in death (Tawafahuma)while they wrong
themselves ...”

006:061 (Part) “when death cometh unto one of you (Tawafatho) ...”

ii) Word: RAFA; Root Word: R-FA-AYN

Whenever the act of ‘Raf’ (raising /elevating) of a human being is attributed to God, the meaning
‘honouring’ or ‘exalting’ is deduced which is correct in this context.

Here are all the derivates of the verb Rafa’a

Perf. act. 2:63, 2:93, 2:253, 4:154, 4:158, 6:165, 7:176, 12:100, 13:2, 19:57, 43:32, 55:7, 79:28, 94:4,
impf. act. 2:127, 6:83, 12:76, 35:10, 49:2, 58:11, perf. pass. 88:18, impf. pass. 24:36, pcple. act. 3:55,
56:3, pcple. pass. 52:5, 56:34, 80:14, 88:13.

The expression that ‘God exalted him unto Himself’ denotes the elevation of Jesus into God’s special
grace. This has nothing to do with him being raised alive. This term is also not exclusive to Jesus as is
evident in the following verse where the same expression ‘rafa’nahu’ (We exalted him) has been
used for Prophet Idris:

019:056-67 ”And make mention in the Scripture of Idris. Lo! he was a saint, a prophet; And We
raised him to high station. (Rafa’nahu)”

Conclusion: It is clear from the Q’uranic verses that Jesus was caused to DIE (His ministry was
ended on earth) and then was raised (RAFA) (exalted to Allah). And we have no knowledge of
where, how and when he was caused to die.

EVIDENCE 2
JESUS HAS NO KNOWLEDGE OF ANYTHING AFTER HIS DEATH TILL THE DAY OF RESURRECTION

This is a very powerful verse. In this exchange it is clear that from the point Jesus leaves his people
till the day of Resurrection, he has no knowledge of anything that his people have done after his
ministry on earth.

Clearly, if there was a second coming before resurrection, he would have clearly known what had
happened from the first time he was raised.

005:116-117

And when Allah will say: O Isa son of Mariam! did you say to men, Take me and my mother for two
gods besides Allah he will say: Glory be to Thee, it did not befit me that I should say what I had no
right to (say); if I had said it, Thou wouldst indeed have known it; Thou knowest what is in my mind,
and I do not know what is in Thy mind, surely Thou art the great Knower of the unseen things. I did
not say to them aught save what Thou didst enjoin me with: That serve Allah, my Lord and your
Lord, and I was a witness of them so long as I was among them, but when Thou didst cause me to
die (Tawafaytani), Thou wert the watcher over them, and Thou art witness of all things.
Points to note:

(a) The dialogue is taking place on the Day of Judgment where Prophet Jesus confirms that he has
no knowledge of what transpired by his followers after his demise on earth till the Day of Judgment.

(b) No allusion is being made, whether express or implied that he had just been raised up after the
defeat of Dajjal and after Mahdi’s appearance or after he had been living amongst the Muslims for x
number of years. If this were to be the case, he would no doubt realised what had transpired by his
own followers (Christians) and therefore would have had knowledge which would place it in direct
contradiction with the Q’uranic narrative.

This Surah would be the perfect place to include this. However, we find the Q’uran is completely
silent on this and more importantly negates this concept.

(c) Note again the use of the word ‘Tawaffaitani’ in verse 5.117.

EVIDENCE 3
NO MESSENGER WILL KNOW WHAT HAS HAPPENED ON EARTH AFTER THEY DIE

005.109

“One day will Allah gather the messengers together, and ask: "What was the response ye received
(from men to your teaching)?" They will say: "We have no knowledge: it is Thou Who knowest in full
all that is hidden."

There is no exclusion for Jesus in this verse.

EVIDENCE 4
THE FAMOUS ‘THEY DID NOT KILL HIM’ VERSE

004.157

‘And they said (in boast), "Behold, we have slain the Christ Jesus, son of Mary [who claimed to be] an
apostle of God" However, they did not slay him, and neither did they crucify him, but it only seemed
to them [as if it had been] so; and, verily those who hold conflicting views thereon are indeed
confused, having no [real] knowledge thereof, and following mere conjecture. For, of a certainty,
they did not slay him’

004.158

‘Nay, God exalted him into Himself - and God is indeed almighty, wise’

All the Q’uran tells us from the above verses is that ‘they killed him not’ as they allege to have done
by putting Jesus on the cross as a petty criminal. But Allah refutes this and says He ‘rafa’d’ Jesus
which means raised him to a high station. There is no mention of ‘rafa’ of Jesus alive in this verse as
this would contradict 3:55 above where it is clearly mentioned that he was ‘Tawaffu’d’. i.e. he was
given death. Reconciling the two, it is quite possible from the above readings that indeed Allah took
him up (in a death state) before ‘they’ had the chance to kill him.

EVIDENCE 5
THE LIFECYCLE OF JESUS
The lifecycle of Jesus is no different from other Prophets as can be seen when compared to that of
Prophet Yahya.

CONCERNING JESUS

019.033
"So peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day that I shall be raised up to life
(again)"!

CONCERNING YAHYA

019.015
So Peace on him the day he was born, the day that he dies, and the day that he will be raised up to
life (again)!

In this we can conclude that there is no difference in the way Yahya is spoken about and Jesus in
terms of his life-cycle. There is no allusion to being born, then being raised alive, then returning,
then dying, then being raised.

EVIDENCE 6
JESUS’S MINISTRY AND CRUCIAL EVENTS INCLUDING HIS MIRACLES ARE SUMMARISED IN THE FOLLOWING
VERSES. HOWEVER THERE IS NO MENTION OF HIS SECOND COMING WHICH IS ARGUABLY THE MOST
IMPORTANT EVENT CURRENTLY FOR MUSLIMS WITH REGARDS JESUS.

005:109

“One day will Allah gather the messengers together, and ask: "What was the response ye received
(from men to your teaching)?" They will say: "We have no knowledge: it is Thou Who knowest in full
all that is hidden."”

005:110

“Then will Allah say: "O Jesus the son of Mary! Recount My favour to thee and to thy mother.
Behold! I strengthened thee with the holy spirit, so that thou didst speak to the people in childhood
and in maturity. Behold! I taught thee the Book and Wisdom, the Law and the Gospel and behold!
thou makest out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by My leave, and thou breathest into it and it
becometh a bird by My leave, and thou healest those born blind, and the lepers, by My leave. And
behold! thou bringest forth the dead by My leave. And behold! I did restrain the Children of Israel
from (violence to) thee when thou didst show them the clear Signs, and the unbelievers among them
said: 'This is nothing but evident magic.'”

005:111

“"And behold! I inspired the disciples to have faith in Me and Mine Messenger: they said, 'We have
faith, and do thou bear witness that we bow to Allah as Muslims'"”

005:112
“Behold! the disciples, said: "O Jesus the son of Mary! can thy Lord send down to us a table set (with
viands) from heaven?" Said Jesus: "Fear Allah, if ye have faith."”

005:113
“They said: "We only wish to eat thereof and satisfy our hearts, and to know that thou hast indeed
told us the truth; and that we ourselves may be witnesses to the miracle."”

005:114

“Said Jesus the son of Mary: "O Allah our Lord! Send us from heaven a table set (with viands), that
there may be for us - for the first and the last of us - a solemn festival and a sign from thee; and
provide for our sustenance, for thou art the best Sustainer (of our needs)."”

005:115

“Allah said: "I will send it down unto you: But if any of you after that resisteth faith, I will punish him
with a penalty such as I have not inflicted on any one among all the peoples."”

The Second coming of Prophet Jesus would be a most spectacular event which is much
anticipated. It is inconceivable that such an anticipated event for the Muslims would fall shy
of mention in the above narratives.

EVIDENCE 7
JESUS PASSED AWAY JUST LIKE OTHER MESSENGERS OF GOD

Compare the following verses:

003:144

“Muhammad is no more than a messenger: many Were the messenger that passed away before
him...”

TRANSLITERATION: “Wama muhammadun illarasoolun qad khalat min qablihi alrrusulu...”

005:075

Christ the son of Mary was no more than a messenger; many were the messengers that passed away
before him

TRANSLITERATION: “Ma almaseehu ibnu maryama illarasoolun qad khalat min qablihi alrrusulu...”

EVIDENCE 8
ALLAH INFORMS PROPHET MUHAMMAD THAT ALL THE PROPHETS WERE HUMANS LIKE HIM AND PASSED
AWAY

021.007

“Before you, also, the apostles We sent were but men, to whom We granted inspiration: If you
realise this not, ask of those who possess the Message”

021.008

“Nor did We give them bodies that ate no food, nor were they exempt from death”

Both verses combined clearly indicate that NO Prophet before Prophet Muhammad still lives or is
living a long time or immortal. The word ‘Khalidun’ in classical parlance carries both the meaning of a
very long time or immortal. In this context the following messages are clear

(i) The messengers were mortals

(ii) Their mortal bodies were sustained by consuming food

(iii) They have all demised.

The third point is once again reiterated in the following verses:

021.034

“We granted not to any man before you permanent life (here): if then you should die, would they
live permanently?”

021.035

“Every soul shall have a taste of death: and We test you by evil and by good by way of trial. to Us
must you return”.

EVIDENCE 9
RE-INTERPRETATION OF VERSES USED TO SUPPORT THE SECOND COMING OF PROPHET JESUS

Jesus as Sign of the Hour

Many make use of the following verse without any bearing on context to prove the second coming
of Jesus

043:061

"And (Jesus) shall be a Sign (for the coming of) the Hour (of Judgment): therefore have no doubt
about the (Hour), but follow ye Me: this is a Straight Way"

We need to remember two main points here:

(1) The Q'uran explicitly tells us consistently throughout the scripture that NOTHING in the Heavens
and the Earth has knowledge of the hour. This knowledge is ONLY with Allah. Therefore this
knowledge cannot be referring to Jesus's second coming where the knowledge of when the day of
judgement will come will be confirmed. Jesus(pbuh)'s second coming would imply that the Day of
Judgement cannot come until Jesus(pbuh) reappears. This is in direct contradiction to the opening
statement of this paragraph.

(2) If verse 43:61 is read within the context of the preceding verses 43:57 onwards, it is clear that
Jesus is being mentioned as an example to the disbelievers of Prophet Muhammad(pbuh)'s time
who ridiculed it. They question whether Jesus is better than their Gods and if resurrection is even a
reality. Allah clarifies that Jesus(pbuh) is indeed a slave of Allah who was bestowed favours and was
an example for the Children of Israel. Then one finds the mention of Jesus as being given as a sign of
knowledge of the hour. The addressee's are still the people of Muhammad(pbuh) to whom this is
being narrated. Jesus being a sign of the hour to Muhammad(pbuh)'s people does not make any
sense. If the Day of Judgment is yet to come as is Jesus's second coming, then Muhammad's people
will not be alive to see this and therefore it makes no sense to address this verse to the people of
Muhammad(pbuh) within this context who are in doubt.

Also note that the word ‘wa Inna hu la ilm’ translates ‘Indeed he IS a sign of the hour’ and is
present tense like ‘tabiuna’ which is a present tense verb and consistent with the narrative. This
clearly proves that the addressees are the People of Prophet Muhammad and this narrative was not
for a future generation.
The context becomes clear if read with verse: 003:049

003:049

"And will make him a messenger unto the Children of Israel, (saying): Lo! I come unto you with a sign
from your Lord. Lo! I fashion for you out of clay the likeness of a bird, and I breathe into it and it is a
bird, by Allah's leave. I heal him who was born blind, and the leper, and I raise the dead, by Allah's
leave. And I announce unto you what ye eat and what ye store up in your houses. Lo! herein verily is
a portent for you, if ye are to be believers"

In verse 3:49; Jesus is being referred to as a sign from the Lord by virtue of him (amongst other
things) blowing life into a clay bird (This is analogous to the resurrection, where Allah will make the
lifeless live again) and raising the living from the dead (Again analogous to what Allah will do on the
day of resurrection). Therefore in Jesus's signs granted by His Lord, there is knowledge of the hour of
how Allah will raise all from the dead.

The message being this:

Why do you think it is impossible for God to raise you and all of mankind from death when He can
create a child without a father and His servant can breathe life into a clay bird and raise the dead?

EVIDENCE 10
The Q’uran consistently informs us that NOTHING in the Heavens nor the Earth has knowledge of
the Hour. This knowledge specifically resides with Allah and no one else. There are also no
indications in the Q’uran when the hour will pass as this would contradict the notion that the Day
of Judgment may come on you suddenly.

This enquiry for signs or knowledge has been rebuked clearly in the Q’uran.

033:063

“Men ask thee of the Hour. Say: The knowledge of it is with Allah only. What can convey (the
knowledge) unto thee? It may be that the Hour is nigh”

Prophet Jesus's second coming would imply that the Day of Judgement cannot take place until Jesus
reappears. This is in direct contradiction to the above verse as this introduces an unwarranted
dependency on a particular event to occur before the hour, which Allah informs could be nigh.

EVIDENCE 11
Disputes are settled on the Day of Judgement- Not in this world.

004:159

“And there is none Of the People of the Book But must believe in him Before his death; And on the Day of
Judgement He will be a witness Against them”.

003:055

Popular Muslim belief that the disputes between Jews, Christians and Muslims will be settled once
Jesus (pbuh) comes back is fully negated and No clues are given in the Quran as to such an event.

EVIDENCE 12
From the secondary sources (Hadith Literature), we learn about the advent of the highly mischievous
entity called “Dajjal- The Anti Christ” and the “The rightly Guided Mehdi”- both would appear before
the advent of Jesus (pbuh). Hadith literature gives dramatic events which would unfold before and
after the appearance of Dajjal. According to many hadiths Dajjal would spread much mischief and
corruption on the face of the earth. The drama ends with a mighty war between Jesus (pbuh) and
Dajjal in which Jesus (pbuh) would kill Dajjal . Thus the existence of these figures necessitates the
second coming of Jesus(pbuh).Yet there is no mention about Dajjal or mehdi in the whole Qur’an !!

Yet, Allah clearly says in the Qur’an “And on the day when We will raise up in every people a
witness against them from among themselves, and bring you as a witness against these-- and We
have revealed the Book to you explaining clearly everything, and a guidance and mercy and good
news for those who submit. (Q 16:89)

If Qur’an states that it is Complete and explaining clearly everything, then why these Muslim beliefs
finds NO SUPPORT in the Qur’an ?

CONCLUSION
The second coming of Jesus and the belief that he was raised alive finds no support in the Q’uran
and from the evidence cited above is clearly negated .Also there is NO evidence available in the
Quran about such an entity called Dajjal !!!
