E-Waste Management System

Abstract:

Electronic waste(E-Waste) is the major growing concern of the world. Emergence of newer
technologies and exponential growth of electronic usage leads to major accumulation of e-waste.
There is need of an application easily accessible to individual and organization for efficient e-
waste management in the form of recycle, reuse and refurbish. Hence, we choose e-waste
management as our project.. Electronic waste or E-waste is relatively a novel addition to the ever-
growing hazardous waste stream. It includes discarded electronic and electrical equipment.
Developing countries are facing enormous challenges related to the generation and management
of E-waste which are either internally generated or imported illegally; India is no exception to it.
However, the existing management practices related to E-waste in India are reasonably poor and
have the potential to risk both human health and the environment. Waste electrical and electronic
equipment is becoming major thread to the whole world. Its toxic emissions mixed with virgin soil
and air and causing harmful effects to the entire biota either directly or indirectly. Direct impacts
include release of acids, toxic compounds including heavy metals, carcinogenic chemicals and
indirect effects such as bio magnification of heavy metals. Many private firms are involved in
collecting, dismantling, separation and exporting e-wastes for recyclers. The focus of our project
e-waste management is to develop such a system that can be used to properly collect e-waste,
recover and recycle material by safe methods, sell and buy electronic waste, dispose of e-waste by
suitable techniques, and raise awareness of the impact of e-waste.

Keywords: E-waste, hazardous waste, risk, management.

Existing System :

 E-waste contains a lot of harmful chemicals such as lead in CRTs of computers and
mercury in flat panel display screens. This can be absorbed by humans through
contaminated drinking water.

 E-waste can affect the environment as well as humans.

 The process of recycling means burning wires to recover metals, melting circuits and also
acid stripping. Just this causes so many problems to the environment.

 Long-term affects on our planet are still unknown.

 Recycling tons of garbage will require separate factories.
 Recycling will produce pollutants, including chemical stews after breaking down the
waste materials.
 Recycling is not always cost-efficient.
 Recycling can increase low quality jobs
 Recycling can create more environmental problems, if not done right
 Recycling does not guarantee good quality products
 Recycling can give people a false sense of security.
 children exposed to harmful waste & chemicals
 many people poisoned by e-waste
 e-waste contains lead, mercury, etc.
 no safety laws
 most of our e-waste shipped to other countries
 takes up a lot of space
 can cause death
 effect on respiratory, urinary, and digestive system
 35-40 years old, incapable of working

Proposed System:

We are primarily trying to achieve following things:

 Collect e-waste from people or organizations

 Analyze whether e-waste can be recycled, refurbished or resale.

 Recycle the e-waste

 Resell the parts and products to the required organizations who want to recycle the products on
their own (for example: Apple company recycles its own products).

 Enable people or organization to buy recycled products and sell old products.

 Analysis of the amount of natural resources recycled by the reports generated at each level of the
system.

 Achieve maximum reusability by having an interaction between different networks (e.g.:

countries like US, India, China, Singapore etc.) in an ecosystem
