A curriculum plan with learning activities that are aligned to the new Leaders Quality Standard.

With knowledge comes comprehension and efficacy on how to be successful, whether this is in the classroom or as an administrator. Through the participation in Masters level courses I have become aware that a number of people who have taken on the formal role of leadership do not always feel they have the skill set to be effective in their role. With the new Leader Quality Standard that has been released, it is imperative that we develop training along with assessment practices so that those who aspire to be leaders are confident in what is expected of them.

Many organizations have ‘Aspiring Leader’ programs and while they help to encourage people to become formal leaders, the question remains, do they adequately prepare people for the new Leader Quality Standards? At this time there is a shortage of people willing to take on the formal role of Educational Leader, and in the absence of accredited leaders, many school divisions find themselves hiring their ‘best option.’ The intent is to then train them or require that they enrol in formal educational programs but the Leader Quality Standard is new and one must wonder how the current expectations of these programs are aligned to the standards. What do they need to know, do, or be in relation to the standards?

Through this project I will evaluate the Leader Quality Standards to clarify what a person needs to know, do and be and then I will compare these to the curriculums or objectives of a number of school division’s aspiring leader programs. If there is a gap, I will compile a list of learning activities that a person could use to develop their skills in this standard.

STAGE 1: PROJECT CONTENT

Significant Content

Objectives:

I will complete research to determine the best ways to develop leadership skills.

I will identify gaps in current Aspiring Leadership programs (if there are any).

I will align what a person needs to know, do, and be with the Leader Quality Standards.

I will create learning activities to support leadership growth that is aligned to the Leader Quality Standards.

Collaboration & Leadership

Creativity and Innovation Once I have determined the gaps in current training for the Leader Quality Standards I will need to generate and apply my ideas to

develop learning activities that are relevant, current and engaging.

Competencies

I

will be working to develop a program for leadership

development that I am hoping will benefit many across the province. I will need to collaborate with a number of current leaders to determine gaps in the current training and how this relates to the new Leaders Quality Standards.

I

will be required to play with ideas and be willing to take some

risks. I will face these challenges with optimism, initiative and ingenuity.

My goal once my project has been completed would be to share these learning activities or strategies on what leaders need to know, do and be, not only provincially but potentially nationally as well.

Communication My skills as a presenter and program developer will have to improve. As I am fairly new to the teaching profession I will need to be mindful of how I say things so that I do not imply that training programs have been lacking in the past. I am a very empathetic person but not always aware of how I am perceived. This is a personal focus at this time.

Computer Literacy

am proficient in most technology, but I will need to utilize digital files and monitoring to support my research and educational growth. I will need to utilize Microsoft Word which I haven’t used in a number of years. I know a few people that are extremely skilled and I will request support if/when I need it.

I

will be developing my personal career and life skills through the

current educational leader programs so I will need to be reflected on their how things were initially developed and think of methods for improvement. As I value honesty, fairness and open-mindedness these attributes will assist in developing my independent problem solving skills. I typically prefer to work on large projects collaboratively and this project will be a first for some time.

In order to evaluate my learning I will request feedback from the divisions that share their Aspiring Leaders curriculum or outcomes on my project.

I will know I am successful when I complete the outlined research and writing on schedule.

I will reflect on the success based on the feedback I receive from my peers, principal and advisor.

I will follow the guidelines on the Capstone Planning Guide and Rubric

Public Audience

As I am developing the Capstone project I would like to be able to connect with leaders in People Services in more than one division in order to maintain my focus on relevant and useful learning activities that will be deemed valuable and able to be incorporated into their training programs.

Once the project has been completed, other than the Capstone review committee, I would like the opportunity to present my strategies and activities to aspiring leaders and those that are in charge of their training. What I think this will look like is offering to present at some leadership conferences. I attended the ULead conference this year and that could be a target audience for this Capstone as well I could present at a variety of Teachers’ conventions around the province.

Reflection Methods

Journal (Individual)

I

have always been an journaller and I will continue to maintain my journals as they help me to process my thoughts and allow

me to focus on the task or activity at hand. These journals also assist with dealing with the stress of deadlines and the multitude of life challenges both personally and professionally that seem to crop up. I have always felt that these journals help me to see the progress that I have made even when it doesn’t feel like much.

Learning/Internship Log (partnership)The internship log is also a learning log. It provides a valuable avenue to reflect on the connections that I am making to how my thinking may be changing and to my previous learning. I will consistently enter the learning activities that I am both participating in and the reading that I am doing. This is shared with my Internship advisor and they will be able to offer additional reflections on my growth.

Blog(public) In order to add to my professional portfolio and reflect on my progress as a learner, I will use my blog, at least once per month to offer an analysis of my current learning and any conclusions or hypothesis that I am grappling with at that time.

Discussions(team)

1. Being a part of a cohort allows for me to have a group of people that are on the same learning journey and as a result I have people to talk with and share both my successes and frustrations. We have become a really tight team and I feel confident that they will be an immense support for me through this learning process. (I also look forward to celebrating with them their successes but also supporting them however they are needing it)

2. I will utilize my internship supervisor (Gloria Antifaiff) as she has offered to provide feedback and ‘an ear’ through this learning journey. She also has connections to groups and organizations that she has been willing to share as a support as well.

3. My acting principal offers great guidance and support and I value that he helps me to reflect from a leader’s perspective.

4. My husband is an ongoing support as he helps to both divert and create distractions. As he is a leader outside of an educational setting, he is able to offer an insight that is often divergent from that of an educator.

5. My teaching partner continues to offer support through our ongoing dialogue, and as a new teacher to the profession she offers a unique perspective that is essential to remember.

6. I would like to develop a connection to a leader who is at our divisional central office within People Services. The purpose would be to share how my learning may impact those that aspire to become leaders and to gain their insight as to what they would like to see developed.

STAGE 2: RESOURCES

Resources Needed:

On site people/facilities:

Leaders in People Services (or potentially other departments) in multiple school divisions to discuss the purpose of the project and to determine the level of need for the resource I am building.

Gloria Antifiaff - as a mentor and guide.

Cohort - Communication and reflective support.

Darin Ratzlaff - Acting Principal for learning support and guidance.

Family - for understanding and emotional support.

In order to gain or maintain these connections, I will need to remember social expectations and not ask too much of any one person. Be kind and reciprocate when appropriate. I will need to be progressive, positive, and persistent when engaging in conversations with leaders at central offices so that I do not offend their programs, but rather supportive in the implementation of the new Leader Quality Standards.

Equipment:

Computer - Chromebook or desktop

Wifi - to ensure access for communication and learning materials.

Printer - for the ability to print articles or journals for the purpose of studying and evaluating content.

Cellular Telephone - to maintain communication

I

presently have access to all these tools, both personally and professionally.

Materials:

Microsoft Word - for creating and editing project.

Paper, pens, pencils and highlighters - to support the organization of my learning.

I

presently have access to all these materials. I have accounted for the potential need for supplies in the budget.

Internet Resources:

City University library for access to articles and journals.

Google Scholar for access to articles and journals.

Google as a search engine for the purpose of:

studying learning activities.

comparing leadership standards.

assisting with determining the know, do and be elements of leadership attributes.

Google Drive to organize and create materials for the project.

Gmail for communication

At this time I have access to all these resources.

Curricular Resources:

Leader Quality Standards

Books and articles regarding understanding leadership development

At this time I have access to these items, however as I gather resources I have allowed for the purchase of resources in the budget.

The Middle: Objective #4 I will create learning activities to support leadership growth that is aligned to the Leader Quality Standards.

Using collaboration (with educational leaders), creative thinking (to develop the activities), problem-solving (to determine what to focus the attention on), as well as organizing information I will create a ‘Unit Plan’ that can be utilized to prepare aspiring leaders of the Leader Quality Standards.

I will have an original Capstone Project that I am proud to present to my peers, the Capstone committee, and leadership development teams as well as the public

REFLECTIONS:

Using this template allows for a detailed focus on the process of the learning ahead. I like to know where I am going and once everything is explicitly written down I know that I will remain on the right track provided I use the plan. I like that PBL focuses on the end result and when I understand what my end goal is I am more diligent in my studies. I found the process initially daunting as this project seems like a gigantic commitment and undertaking, but once I got into completing each section I feel confident that I will be successful as I have visualized the finish line.

Brainstorming Ideas/Notes:

Check with Gloria, Paul and Brent to see if they have any contacts with a leader in a school division’s ‘People Services’ department
