Director’s Message
“ IIM Ahmedabad is India’s premier management school, world renowned for its excellence in research
and education. FPM is IIMA’s doctoral programme with high levels of specialization. It contributes
to the Institute’s mission by supporting the pursuit of cutting edge research.

FPM prepares qualified and capable scholars who will shape thought in academic institutions and
management organizations. We recruit highly motivated individuals with outstanding academic
backgrounds. The doctoral programme provides participants exposure to a broad variety of research
interests and faculty deeply engaged with practice and policy. Students develop strong theoretical
foundations through coursework in particular areas and receive training in highly specialized
research methods. At the dissertation stage, they have an opportunity to engage actively and
deeply with academics, practitioners, and policymakers as they conduct interdisciplinary research.
The programme affords doctoral students the flexibility to use appropriate research methods for
their research questions.

The mix of breadth of coverage, proximity to practice and policy, and flexibility in methodology
enables doctoral students to undertake meaningful research on complex and relevant topics.
Supporting the academic research is cutting edge infrastructure, including the best management
library in India, and access to state-of-art online resources.

The doctoral programme enrolled its first student in 1971 and graduated its first student in 1974. Prof. Errol D’Souza
Since then, 365 doctoral students have been conferred with the title Fellow of the Indian Institute of Director, IIMA
Management Ahmedabad, and have gone on to contribute significantly to management academies
and other institutions.

We invite you to consider our doctoral programme and would be happy to discuss your academic
interests if you have the inclination and commitment to undertake rigorous training, conduct
research relevant to management practice and policy, and pursue an academic career with focus
on research.

Chairperson’s Message
“The Fellow Programme of Management (FPM) is the doctoral programme of IIMA. Introduced in
1971, it is one of the earliest doctoral programmes of Management Science in India. It remains the
preferred choice for students aspiring to pursue a career in Management at institutions of higher
learning such as business schools/universities as well as in consulting firms, think tanks and leading
corporates in India and abroad. So far, 365 students have successfully completed the programme.

Over a period of time, FPM has evolved gradually from its purpose of ‘knowledge dissemination’ to
‘knowledge creation’. This shift in emphasis has, thus, created an ecosystem of advanced research
and publications. FPM scholars investigate a wide range of highly specialised topics in the overall
gamut of management disciplines like marketing, finance, economics, public policy, business policy,
human resources, and organizations. Our FPM students come from diverse backgrounds, including
engineering, economics, psychology, public policy, management, and social sciences, and from
all stages of life. Some begin immediately after their undergraduate studies, while others pursue
their doctoral ambitions after a decade or more of professional experience. The first two years of
rigorous coursework provide the requisite theoretical foundation and in-depth understanding of the
respective areas of specialization. Successful completion of the course work makes students eligible
to pursue their dissertation. The FPM students have to demonstrate their independent research
thinking through publications in top class academic journals and make scholarly presentations of
their work. Their contributions extend not only to business practices, but also to public policy and
governance.

We provide a thriving intellectual environment for our doctoral students. The faculty at IIMA
brings tremendous research strength and a wide variety of industry and government experience
Prof. Abhiman Das across diverse sectoral and functional domains. The institute encourages cross-sectoral and cross-
Chairperson, FPM functional research. Research collaboration with faculty abroad is also supported and encouraged.
We provide excellent research facilities including a state-of-the-art library on management
literature, journals and databases, data labs with high computing facility, subject specific research
centers, housing on campus, a decent fellowship, and additional financial support for research and
conference attendance.

We invite you to consider our doctoral programme and would be happy to discuss your academic
interests, if you have the inclination and commitment to undertake rigorous training of the frontiers
of management and subsequently pursue an academic or a corporate career with a focus on research.

ECONOMICS The programme has provided me with a myriad set of opportunities for interdisciplinary education and research and enabled me to pursue research in
my own direction under the guidance of highly qualified faculty members. The fellows are trained in the most recent methodologies, motivating them in
bringing out original research work and thereby enabling them to make significant scholarly contributions. The two years of coursework are designed
to equip the students with basic skills required for analysing managerial problems which are honed by faculty whose involvement with domestic and
international, public as well as private organizations enables them to bring relevant managerial issues for classroom discussions. The course work also
gives the fellows deeper insights into their respective areas. The programme also provides opportunities where students are encouraged to pursue their
research interests through publications and conference presentations. In addition, students are given a chance to enhance their personal growth by
acknowledging and questioning their assumptions, beliefs, goals and objectives.

Finance and The experience has been nothing like what I had before coming to campus. Academic experience is enriching, be it the in-depth area FPM courses
that help understand and appreciate the theoretical basis of your area or the more general PGP courses, that give a taste of what management is
Accounting about. Its as an FPM student that you recognise just how much you do not know in the subject that everyone including yourself, thought that you were
an expert in. You realise where the frontiers of research in your domain may lie and you meet your passion. I personally felt that I had to really apply
myself after a long while. PGP courses are fun and if you see them from the perspective that you may be the one delivering it a few years from now
to the brightest minds in the country that you are seated with, its a whole new experience and a learning opportunity.
Teachers act not only as instructors but also as mentors and seniors, in some cases, which is extremely inspiring. They are more than willing to
accommodate one on one interaction to guide you on matters of research or life.
The FPM office and community is extremely supportive and you are likely to feel almost pampered.
Life beyond academics is mostly about family for a married person like me. Accommodation for a married people is excellent. The campus is a calm
quiet place in the middle of the city and the facilities like sports, gym, eateries etc. are very good. It's a fantastic home for the tenure of your stay here.
Another element that deserves a special mention is the library. It has one of the finest collection of books, journals and databases that you may come
across and that is definitely very helpful in the FPM journey, especially in the advanced stages.
Overall, you will feel proud to be a part of this institute as a Fellow student.

The interdisciplinary nature of an FPM Programme at the IIM Ahmedabad and the distinguished faculty along with the availability of state-of-the-art
facilities create a myriad of possibilities for you. The programme provides the necessary coursework and research training to expand my skill sets with a
strong focus on fundamentals. The flexibility to customize a right mix of PGP courses and the FPM courses helps us to pursue our own individual subject

of perceptions and ideas originating due to the diversity in cultures. The FPM classes, in particular, have enabled me to link the empirical reality with the
policy framework and comprehend the challenges in the policy formulation domain by evaluating them through newer lenses.

The learning pedagogy with a strong focus on building fundamentals, the fellow mates from diverse cultures, the infrastructure from the lush- green
