CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

According to Carol Woods (2015) the word “Time management” refers to the way

that you organize and plan how long you spend on specific activities. It is the process of

organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific activities. Good time

management enables you to work smarter – not harder – so that you get more done in less

time, even when time is tight and pressures are high. Failing to manage your time damages

your effectiveness and causes stress. It seems that there is never enough time in the day. But,

since we all get the same 24 hours, why is it that some people achieve so much more with

their time than others? The answer lies in good time management. The highest achievers

manage their time exceptionally well. By using the time-management techniques in this

section, you can improve your ability to function more effectively – even when time is tight

and pressures are high. Good time management requires an important shift in focus from

activities to results: being busy isn’t the same as being effective. (Ironically, the opposite is

often closer to the truth.) Spending your day in a frenzy of activity often achieves less,

because you’re dividing your between so many different tasks.

This is really one of the problems that usually encountered by the student especially to top

section whose controlled by peer pressure and loaded with paper works. In connection with

this, set of deadlines for more paper works, assignments, activities and projects from them

and because of this, the word “time management” is very difficult to accomplish.

Time is very crucial, then people need to do their best by doing time management so

that they can be achieved their goal. “Time being a limited resource,” means that a lost
minute is hard to return, life is short, and people need to make the best of it by making every

minute count.

Students should generate a habit of utilizing time more efficient and affectively. They

are the new generation of the developed world therefore with the punctual character they

could be unstoppable in the world. They can accomplish a lot in life therefore the world will

be a better place. Time management is a skill that can be learned, and when done so can make

life less stressful and productive. Everyone has different task assigned that need to be done

differently (UK Essay 2015)

And as the researchers search for the meaning of Time management says it is the

ability to use one’s time effectively or productively especially in studying.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

As the top section, time management is substantial in terms of studies because of

many tasks and high expectations. People know that when you are at the top section, teachers

trust and expect you to finish paper works on less time and have high expectations that they

can multi-task properly.

As a student, managing your time is very efficient. It greatly affects your academic

performance and health. The deadlines sometimes overlapped and it causes stress to students.

Sometimes they starve themselves and sleep late unless they finish the given task. Also, some

students prioritize one task and ignore others.

If students handle their time efficiently, they can think smartly than hardly. As you

think smartly you can control your time easily and finalize the tasks at a given time. It also

builds you as a better learner and gives you greater opportunities at your future work. As you

control your time smartly, it gets you more paper works to finalize in less time. Time

handling shouldn’t take your time, but rather make an extra time for you, (Anonymous).
If you know time management, you will know the difference between the essential

and nonessential, they carefully allocate the twenty four hours in a day that all of us have.

Statement of the Problem

In general, the researchers aim to identify “the effects of time management to the

students in their performance.” Specifically, this paper aims to answer the following

questions:

1. What are the factors which affect the time management of the students?

2. How does time management greatly affect the academic performances of 10-Galileo?

3. How would 10-Galileo improve their time management skills?

Significance of the Study

This study has an advantage to the following:

Students. Through this study, learners with lot of tasks to do should know how to

manage their individual time properly.

Teacher. They will acquire more ideas to motivate well their students in terms of

time management. This will create a good environment and a good relationship.

Scope of Delimitation of the Study

The purpose of this study is to assess the performance that affects the students in

terms of time management.

The study is conducted in Kaypian National High School. The study utilized

descripted method to 10 Galileo. The number of respondent is 45 students, from the said

section.
Definition of terms

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This chapter includes the relevant the related literature and studies.

Related Studies

Many college students may find the academic experience very stressful (K. J. Swick,

1987). One potential coping strategy frequently offered by university counselling services is

time management. 165 students completed a questionnaire assessing their time management

behaviours and attitudes, stress, and self-perceptions of performance and grade point average

(GPA). The study revealed 2 major findings. The Time Management Behaviour Scale

consists of 4 relatively independent factors; the most predictive was Perceived Control of

Time. Students who perceived control of their time reported significantly greater evaluations

of their performance, greater work and life satisfaction, less role ambiguity, less role

overload, and fewer job-induced and somatic tensions. Findings are consistent with theory

and advice on time management (e.g., R. S. Schuler; 1979) but also indicate that the

dynamics of time management are more complex than previously believed. (PsycINFO

Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)

According to Mr. Ward (1972) “Better students are more likely than weaker

students”. This is why it would be more accurate to be a better students, using time

management. Furthermore, in an article made by Dr. Bob Kizlik, “effective study skills must

be practiced in order for you to improve. It is not enough too simply” think about “studying;

you have to actually do it, and in the process use information from what you to do get better.
Local Studies

According to Inquirer.net (Raul Jay Palabrica 2012), “for the nth time, there are moves to

make ‘Filipino Time,’ or the habit of many Filipinos of coming late for their appointments, a

thing of the past. Last week the Department of Science and Technology, in cooperation with

the Philippine representative of the Discovery Channel announce it’s to make Filipino time-

conscious. Dubbed as “Juan time” project, the campaign will start with encouraging Filipino

to synchronize their clocks and watches with a Philippine standard with everybody aligned to

the same time reference, it would no longer be unacceptable excuse to come late on account

of the wrong time indicated in the time piece.

Related Literature

The interest in time management is by no means new, and in an increasingly

globalized world the problem of how to manage time was already discussed by several

authors already from the 1950s. They proposed different methods how to manage time issues

such as work plans (e.g. to-do lists) in order to increase time performance, but also found new

ways in which people in organizations people would improve their efforts and better manage

their time. For the purpose of the Wyrdin, a review of the “time management” literature will

be made as an attempt to offer some theoretical foundations both to the team and the users.

Interestingly enough, time cannot be managed, because it is an inaccessible factor (Roe et al.,

2005). Only the way a person deals with time can be influenced. Time management can be

viewed as a way of monitoring and controlling time (e.g. Eilam and Aharon, 2003). This is

why it would be more accurate to speak about self-management rather than time

management, because it implies the performance of multiple tasks within a certain time

period. However, in the literature, the term self-management has a different meaning which is
monitoring and regulating oneself, but it does not make any specific reference to techniques

for monitoring time use (alinhorj 2012 · 1 revision ).

Time management in business world, project run as they possibly can (Adair and

Allen, 2003; Convey, 2004; Saunders et al, 2004). Kitter (1989),Irons(2003) and Schwartz

and Mc Carthy (2007) luminate that the core issue surrounding time management is that time

is a resource that is restricted and that employees have to have energy for a business to run

successfully. Schwartz and Mc Carthy (2007) took a step further by stating that the behaviour

and rituals associated with employees at companies have a direct effect on that company’s

revenue productivity. Hence, time management becomes an even more that businesses

function to the best of their ability (Jex and Elaqua, 1999). Time management is a “balancing

act” (Friemann, 2000).

According to Orlikowsky and Yates (2002), the temporal dimension of works has

become more important because of expanding global competition and increased demands for

immediate availability of products and services. Garhammer (2002) has pointed at the

increased pace of life shown in doing things faster (acceleration), constructing time

expenditure (e.g. eat faster, sleep less), and compressing actions (making a .phone call while

having lunch).

McCay (1959) developed a concept for a time management training program, which

is still being used. Critical elements are: giving insight into time-consuming activities,

changing time expenditure, and increasing workday efficiency by teaching people how to

make a daily planning, how to prioritise task and how to handle unexpected tasks. Many

books and articles were written to convey these and similar ideas to managers, promising

them a greater effectiveness while using less time (e.g. Blanchard and Johnson, 1992)
Local Literature

According some Filipino Sociologist, this tardiness habits is a carry-over of the

practice during the colonial times of Spanish officials delaying their attendance in formal

functions to show there “ascendancy” over those who came earlier. It was the Spanish subtle

way of saying that they have more important things to attend to so they should not be

expected to be as prompt as the punctual attendees. Fifty years of American rule, which

emphasized time discipline, were not enough to wean Filipinos away from this deplorable

vestige of Spanish colonialism.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researchers use the descriptive research design to identify the factors affecting

time management to accurately gather the necessary information for the research, which is to

analyse and to determine the factors affecting time management, mean deviation and standard

deviation approach will be utilized.

Research Instrument

The research tool that will be used is a survey and class record, whether they do time

management, and the reason why and what are the things they usually do, and the frequency

of how many tardy they have in the past few months.

Locale

This research wants to investigate and analyse the time management. Hence, Kaypian

National High school a public secondary school in City of San Jose Del Monte will be the

research setting.

Participants

The participants of this research are the students of 10-Galileo which consists of 56

students, yet researchers only qualified 45 students..

Statistical Treatment

The researchers separately computed with mean and standard deviation respondent’s

tardiness. So that you will know the importance of mean and standard deviation. Hence, the
researchers also use a pie graph to show at is the percentage if the students know how to

manage their time properly, and also a histogram to know the number of tardy of boys than

girls.

The researchers got the mean and standard deviation of the ratings of each of the

respondents. The mean is the arithmetic average of the set value, or distribution. The mean is

so important in this study because it allows researchers organize and summarize an immense

amount of data. In to value that are more comprehensible. Finally, it provides clear data that

are researchers that can deal with their study. The mean (also known as average), is obtained

by adding the sum of observed value by number of the observation, n

On the other hand, standard deviation of a statistical population, data set, or

CHAPTER V
Summary, Recommendation and Conclusion

The word “Time management” refers to the way that you organize and plan how long

you send on specific activities. It is the process of organizing and planning how to divide

your time between the specific activities (Mind Tool). It enables you to work smarter not

harder. Failing to manage your time causes stress. The highest achievers manage their time

exceptionally well. Good time management requires an important shift in focus from

activities to results; being busy isn’t the same as being effective. Good time management

gets you work smarter not harder so you get more in less time.

Time is very crucial; people need to do their best by doing time management so that they can

be achieved their goal. “Time being a limited resource,” means that a lost minute is hard to

return, life is short, and people need to make the best of it by making every minute count.

As a student, managing your time is very efficient. It greatly affects your academic

performance and health. The deadlines sometimes overlapped and it causes stress to students.

Sometimes they starve themselves and sleep late unless they finish the given task. Also, some

students prioritize one task and ignore others. It also builds you as a better learner and gives

you greater opportunities at your future work.

Through this study, the student learners with a lot of tasks to do should know how to

manage their individual time properly. And also the teachers will acquire more ideas to

motivate well their students in terms of time management. This will create a good

environment and a good relationship.

The purpose of this study is to assess the performance that affects the students in terms of

time management. The study is conducted in Kaypian National High School. The study

utilized descripted method to 10 Galileo. The number of respondent is 45 students, from the

said section.

Findings

Based on the survey that researchers made:

 10 out of 45 participants can handle their time properly

 35 out of 45 participants can handle but sometimes they can’t manage their time.

 27.6% of the respondents choose social media as their leisure.

 17.6% spend their time in studying.

 25.6% spend their time by listening music.

 11.6% spend their time on other activity

Conclusion

The researchers conclude that:

 Most of 10-Galileo student sometimes can handle their time.

 If you don’t use your time management properly there were many consequences that

will happen.

 Time handling is hard but important and very useful.

 We find out that, most of 10 – Galileo spends their time on leisure not in studying.

 Time management can help our daily life but it’s not easy to handle time wisely.

 If you manage your time, you can do all the things that you want to do.

 Using time management helps you to be more responsible and to prioritize the things

that you need to accomplish in life.

Recommendation

To Students. Time Managing can relieve stress especially for the students. They

should be doing detailed time log. By logging their daily activities in a 15-20 minutes interval

they might discover the unnecessary activities (such as social media), which taking up way to

much of their time that distracts to do necessary things.

To Teachers. To effectively manage their time, researchers suggests to teachers that

they should give the given requirements on their given subjects before starting the lesson so

they can set the dates and don’t be pressured and stay up late so they can pass it on the given

deadline. Researchers also suggests that teachers should consider the allotted time for the

paper works especially when its time-consuming.
