15. Reading List:
1. Don A. Watson, 'Construction Materials and Processes', McGraw Hill, 1972.
2. W.B. McKay, 'Building Construction', Person India, Vol, 1 2013,Vol II, 2012.
3. S.C Rangwala 'Building Construction' Charotar Publishing House, India, 2016.
4. S.K.Sharma, 'A Text book of Building Construction', S. Chand & Co Ltd., New Delhi, 1998.
5. S.K. Duggal, 'Building Materials', New Age International Publishers, 2016.
6. R.J. S. Spence and D.J. Cook, 'Building Materials in Developing Countries', John Wiley and sons
1983.
7. S. C. Rangwala, 'Engineering Materials', Charotar Publishing House India, 2015.
8. Roy Chudley, Roger Greeno, 'Building Construction Handbook', Routledge, 2010.
16. Assessment pattern:

(i) Term paper / Assignment List of Plates

1. Components of a Brick, Various cuts of bricks and Brick
bonding for brick masonry.
2. Brick arches, coping, paving patterns in brick, clay tile
details for roofs.
3. Construction detail for Hourdi block roofing, precast brick arch
panels.
4. Construction details for various timber roofs
5. Construction details for various timber doors and windows
6. Construction details for timber staircase and timber product
partitions
7. 3 plates for design problem involving all the construction
techniques learned in course duration
(ii) Seminar Seminar on modern parametric brick facades and brick walls,
Seminar by Ar.Suresh Menon on Brick arches
(iii) Quiz / Comprehension Surprise Quiz
(iv) Case study discussion Case study visit to Auroville Earth institute to understand clay
products, Visit to Senate house
(v) Carry home exercise & All assignments are carry home assignments
self-study
(vi) Innovative methods  Students find difficulty in understanding the details as 3d
objects to help in this regard students would be asked to do
through
scale 3d models for brick bonding and timber trusses.
 Students are required to maintain a dedicated book BC
where they have to generate sketches and notes after each
lecture. These notes would be corrected periodically for
tracking the level of understanding of each student.

17. Expected outcome / learning quotient of the course: (Based on syllabi -which is measurable)
 Knowledge of properties and construction methods of brick, clay products and timber products.
 Ability to design and detail structural and non-structural components of simple buildings using the
above materials.
 Ability to integrate knowledge of properties and construction methods of basic building materials in
the design of simple projects.
