Preface
This document contains procedures necessary to construct the Command Center. These proce-
dures must be completed in preparation for the population and interconnection of electronic
components and mechanical devices associated with the Command Center™.

NOTE
Review the text and figures of a complete section before performing any procedure.

1. Preinstallation
This chapter presents information on preinstallation issues for the Command Center
configuration. This includes the terminology used throughout this document, and the
unloading and unpacking of the Command Center module parts.

Terminology
Figure 1-1 defines the sections and parts necessary to construct a typical Command Center con-
figuration. The nomenclature employed here is used throughout this document for consistency
and clarity.

Unloading
The Command Center modules are shipped on individual shipping pallets. Worksurface support
brackets and module joining hardware for each bay are disassembled and packaged inside each
module for shipment.
The Command Center wedge modules including the faceplates required for wedge module posi-
tioning are disassembled and shipped fully knocked down in their own box.
The worksurfaces for the Command Center are shipped separately.
Each worksurface box contains the front panel locking block hardware, and hardware required to
mount the worksurface to the Command Center and to fasten it to adjacent worksurfaces.
Command Center module accessories such as keyboard drawers are shipped separately.

NOTE
1. The individual Command Center units are shipped with the necessary hardware
to construct each unit and to join the units together to produce the desired configu-
ration. It is important to complete an inventory of the associated hardware shipped
in each unit. This allows identification and location of the hardware necessary to
construct the Command Center.
2. Many of these procedures require two people.

Unpacking
NOTE
The following procedure requires two people.

! CAUTION
When unpacking the individual containers, use care when cutting the metal straps
securing the carton to the pallet. They may snap back and cause injury.

NOTE
Before initiating the unpacking procedure, verify that all the material ordered is
present.

To unpack the Command Center bay, perform the following procedure:


1. Position the Command Center bay close to the final location.
2. Using the tin snips, cut the two metal straps securing the carton to the pallet.
3. Remove all exterior shrinkwrap.
4. Remove the monitor arms.
5. Unwrap the monitor arms.
6. Locate and remove all hardware bags and piece parts.
7. Cut the plastic straps securing the module bottom pan to the pallet.
8. Remove the bolts securing the Command Center bay to the pallet.
9. Walk the Command Center bay off the pallet until the side of the bay is resting on the
floor.
10. Pivot the bay off the pallet.
11. Remove the pallet.
12. Lower the bay to the floor.

NOTE
Allow 15 inches between each bay for the required wedge modules.

2. Installation Procedures
This chapter includes information on the Command Center installation procedures. This
includes information on the tools required, a parts list, installation of the monitors and the
monitor support arms, monitor power connections, installation of worksurface support brackets,
installation of the wedge modules, installation of the Command Center worksurfaces, keyboard
drawer installation, GCIO module installation, cables assembly, I/A Series speaker
installation, end table assembly, and anchoring the Command Center.
In this Command Center installation procedure common configurations are addressed. There are
multiple piece parts and fastening hardware associated with the installation of the Command
Center. Refer to Figure 1-1 to identify the correct piece part or hardware necessary to perform a
particular installation procedure.

Tools Required
The following tools are required to perform the installation of the Command Center properly and
safely:
 A 7/16-inch open end and socket wrench
 A 1/2-inch open end and socket wrench
 A number 2 Phillips screwdriver
 A number 2 Phillips screwdriver over 12 inches in length
 A rubber mallet
 A utility knife
 A pair of pliers
 Allen Hex Socket Drive Set with a 0.093 inch wrench
 Allen Hex Socket Drive Set with a 0.063 inch wrench
 A pry bar.

Parts List
Table 2-1 lists parts and associated hardware necessary to construct the Command Center. Use
this table in conjunction with the figures in this chapter to identify the parts required to construct
the Command Center.

Installing the Monitor Support Arms


The monitor support arms support none, one, or two monitors depending on the configuration
of the particular Command Center.

NOTE
This procedure requires two people.

To install the monitor support arms:


1. If the cover plates are in position, remove them and store them in a safe location.
Refer to Figure 2-1.

2. Locate the monitor support arms applicable to configuration.


3. From the rear of the bay position the right monitor support arm.
4. Referring to Figure 2-2 and using the supplied hardware, attach the monitor arm sup-
port bracket.
5. Position the monitor support arm so that the bracket fits correctly.
6. When the arm is in the correct position, tighten the single screw on the monitor sup-
port arm bracket.

7. Install support arm on the Command Center bay.


8. Repeat Steps 1 through 7 for the left monitor support arm.

NOTE
At this point in time hand-tighten all associated nuts and bolts. Remember to fully
tighten all nuts and bolts before completing the installation.

Installing the Monitors


NOTE
If two monitors are to be installed, always install the top monitor first.

To install the monitor(s) perform the following procedure. Refer to Figure 2-3 and Figure 2-4.

NOTE
This procedure requires two individuals.

NOTE
The monitor is prewired for both power and interface signals at the factory. When
mounting the monitor, you must be aware that the power cable and interface cable
must be snaked through the mounting arms as the monitor is being attached to the
mounting arms. Unwrap the power and interface cables before initiating this proce-
dure and straighten both the cables so that when they are snaked through the mon-
itor support arms, they pass smoothly.

1. Determine the required location of each monitor.


2. Install the two lower mounting screws and washers as shown in Figure 2-4.

3. Position the monitor between the two mounting arms.


4. Begin to snake both the power and interface cables down the right and left support
arms.
5. When the cables are completely through the monitor arms and the monitor is posi-
tioned against the back of monitor arms, loosely attach the monitor to the support

arms by sliding the monitor mounting brackets over the lower mounting screws posi-
tioned in Step 2.
6. Continue to snake the power cables into the bay legs to the ac power connector illus-
trated in Figure 2-7.
7. Using a tie-wrap, secure interface cable to the bay tray.

NOTE
When mounting the bottom monitor, ensure that the bottom monitor is inside
(toward the front of bay) the top monitor.

8. Repeat Steps 1 through 7 for the lower monitor.


9. Secure all monitors with the mounting hardware.

Connecting Bay to Bay


To connect a bay to bay configuration, perform the following procedure.

NOTE
This procedure should be performed as the completed Command Center is being
finalized. Refer to Figure 2-5.

1. After the monitors are mounted and the power and interface cables are in position,
position the bay to bay bracket as shown in Figure 2-5.
2. Using the hardware supplied, attach the bay to bay bracket as shown.
3. Using the hardware supplied, attach the arm alignment bracket as shown.

Monitor Power Connections


1. To connect power to the upper and lower monitor, refer to Figure 2-6 and Figure 2-7.

NOTE
The power receptacle is located under the back cover. Because the Bay may be
located at a cable distance of up to 100 feet from the monitor’s video source, there
may be a difference in the Earth potential between the Bay and the video source.
Therefore, ensure that the Earth connection to the power receptacle block in each
Bay is at the same voltage level as the Earth of the video generator. Inadequate
Earthing may result in disappointing video display operation.

2. Continue to snake the monitor power cables through the bay down the inside of the
leg and into the back bay support.
3. Plug the monitor power cord into the 4-position power outlet strip.

Installing Worksurface Support Brackets


To install the worksurface support brackets:
1. Locate the worksurface support brackets. Refer to Figure 2-8.
2. Position one worksurface support bracket on either side of the Command Center
module in the slots provided in the frame structure. Refer to Figure 2-8.
3. Using the hardware supplied, loosely attach the worksurface support brackets to the
frame.
4. Repeat Steps 1 and 3 for all required worksurface support brackets.

NOTE
The worksurface support brackets are secured during the actual installation of the
worksurface.

Installing the Wedge Modules


To install the wedge module:
1. Locate the wedge and the wireway, right and left, to be employed to connect a wedge
between the bays. Refer to Figure 2-9.
2. Using the hardware supplied, connect the wireway to the monitor mounting arm.
3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for both bays.
4. Referring to Figure 2-10, position the wedge between the bays.

Installing the Command Center Worksurfaces


To install the worksurface or worksurfaces, perform the following procedure:
1. Locate the worksurfaces and associated hardware.
2. Position the worksurface over the worksurface support brackets.
3. Position the worksurface against the base of the monitor support arms.
4. Locate the worksurface so that the embedded nuts in the underside of the worksurface
are aligned over the slots in the worksurface support bracket.

5. Using the bolts, washers, and lockwashers supplied, loosely attach the worksurface to
the worksurface support brackets.

NOTE
If multiple worksurfaces are to be installed and joined together as a continuous
worksurface, perform the following steps.

6. Insert the spline into one end of the worksurface. Refer to Figure 2-11.
7. Insert the two tiebolts into the locations shown in Figure 2-11.
8. Loosely tighten the tiebolts until the adjoining worksurfaces meet. Do not secure at
this time.
9. Secure after final adjustment.
10. Repeat Steps 1 through 9 until all worksurfaces are mounted.
11. Level and position the worksurfaces.
12. When all worksurfaces are level and positioned correctly, tighten all mounting
hardware.

Keyboard Drawer Installation


1. Once the keyboard drawer location is determined, turn the appropriate worksurface
over to fasten the keyboard drawer.
2. Remove the keyboard drawer from the shipping carton.
3. Using the paper drilling template supplied with the keyboard drawer, mark the loca-
tions of 8 new mounting holes.
4. Drill 8 holes 5/64 inches in diameter to a depth of 1/2 inch.
5. Place the keyboard drawer upside-down (refer to Figure 2-12) on the predetermined
worksurface.
6. Align the four keyboard mounting brackets over the eight predrilled mounting holes
in the worksurface.
7. Using the screws provided, secure the keyboard drawer to the worksurface.

8. Turn the worksurface over to the normal position.

GCIO Module Installation


To install a GCIO module into the Command Center, refer to Figure 2-13 and perform the fol-
lowing procedure.
1. With the hardware supplied, mount the GCIO brackets onto the GCIO module as
illustrated in Figure 2-13.
2. Position the GCIO into the Command Center bay (refer to Figure 2-13).
3. Secure the GCIO to the Command Center tray with the hardware supplied.

USB Cable Connectors for USB Keyboard/Mouse


Certain newer processors use USB cable connectors for connecting the keyboard and mouse to
the processor. These USB connectors can be installed in a console with round cutout bulkhead
holes in the cover plate of the bay or in a console with compound cutout bulkhead holes in the
cover plate of the bay.
To install the USB cable connector(s), refer to Figure 2-14:

NOTE
Depending on the configuration of the Command Center, there is a requirement of
either none or two USB connectors for each Command Center bay.

1. Remove the filler plug(s) from the cable cutout in the cover plate of the bay.
2. To install a USB cable into the cover plate of a console with round cutout bulkhead
holes:
a. Trim the corners of the USB connector (Figure 2-14) removing enough material
to allow the connector to pass through the bulkhead hole.

b. Pass the cable through the bulkhead hole and plug the USB connector into either
the processor, the USB extender (P0972NZ), or the 3m (10 ft) USB extension
cable (P0972RJ).
c. Install split grommet (X0179HT) around the cable and into the bulkhead hole.
3. To install a USB cable for operation of a keyboard and mouse in a console with com-
pound cutout bulkhead holes in the cover plate of the bay;
a. Push USB connector through square cutouts in cover plate of the bay.
b. Plug the USB connector into either the processor, the USB extender (P0972NZ),
or the 3m (10 ft) USB extension cable (P0972RJ).
c. Install split grommet (X0179HT) around the cable and into the bulkhead hole.
4. Repeat the appropriate above steps for each location where a USB connector is
required.

DIN Cable Clamps and Associated DIN Cables


Assembly for PS-2 Peripherals
To install the DIN cable clamp(s) and associated DIN cable connector(s), refer to Figure 2-15.

NOTE
Depending on the configuration of the Command Center, there is a requirement of
none, one, or two DIN cable clamps for each Command Center bay.

1. Locate the required DIN cable clamp(s) supplied with the Command Center.
2. Assemble the DIN cable clamp as illustrated in Figure 2-15.
3. Insert the corresponding DIN cable connector into the clamp.
4. Friction tighten the clamp to the DIN cable connector.
5. Slide the DIN cable clamp over the mounting bolts as illustrated in Figure 2-15.
6. With the hardware supplied, secure the DIN cable clamp to the inside of the cover
plate.
7. Push the DIN cable connector flush with the face of the cover plate.

8. To completely secure the DIN cable, tighten the two plastic screws on the DIN cable
connector.
9. Repeat Steps 1 through 8 for each location where a DIN cable connector is required.

I/A Series Speaker Installation


To install a set of I/A Series speakers and associated power supply into the Command Center, per-
form the following procedure (refer to Figure 2-13).
1. Locate the speakers and Velcro™ required for this installation.
2. Cut the Velcro into four 3-inch strips.
3. Remove the protective covering from the adhesive side of the Velcro strips.
4. Place two of the Velcro strips, adhesive side down, at the location where the
speakers are to be mounted.
5. Place the remaining two Velcro strips, adhesive side down, on the side of each speaker.
6. Mount each speaker to the interior of the Command Center.
7. Position the speaker power supply as shown in Figure 2-13.

End Table Assembly


The end table is shipped partially constructed. The tabletop surface must be mounted onto the
table frame. It is packaged and shipped on a pallet with all the hardware necessary to construct the
table.

To assemble the free-standing table, perform the following procedure:


1. Unpack the tabletop, table frame, and hardware from the pallet.
2. Referring to Figure 2-16, position the tabletop so that the pilot holes on the bottom

3. Using the bolts and washers provided, secure the tabletop to the table mounting
brackets.

Leg Trim Molding Cover Installation


There are two versions of the leg trim molding cover associated with the Command Center, a
right and left. They are mounted on the inside and outside of each bay leg.
To install the inside and outside leg trim molding cover (refer to Figure 2-19), perform the follow-
ing procedure:
1. Select the molding cover, either right or left, to be inserted into the corresponding bay
leg position, either right or left.
2. If the cover plate illustrated in Figure 2-19 is already secured into place, then it must
be removed before the molded cover is installed.
3. Position the leg trim molding cover just above the cutout.
4. Slide the molded cover in and down until the cover is properly seated into the leg
cutout.
5. Reinstall the cover plate removed in Step 2.
6. Repeat this procedure until all the required leg trim molding covers are installed.

The Command Center has two anchoring ports in the bottom of the bay. Threaded floor anchors
that can receive a 1/4-inch bolt or a threaded rod are recommended.

General Clean-up
After completing the above instructions, all worksurfaces and top panels should be fastened such
that there is a tight seam between adjacent modules.
Upon completion, wipe the Command Center down with a non-abrasive household detergent.
