SERVICE LEARNING JOURNAL # 1

Before taking this subject, I am not really familiar with the concept of Corporate Social
Responsibility. I am not sure if I can use this in the future or If this is just like my other subjects
that I think that is not needed. My friends who already took up CSRGOVE told me that this subject
is fun and amazing because you will meet a lot of people in the community. They told me that we
will form a group to help the community that was given to us by the university. I already did
community immersions just like this during my freshman year because of NSTP and TREDTWO.
Just like these subjects, we also helped people in the chosen organization by building a mini
library for the kids and giving foods that they can eat.
During the first few discussions, I learned that Corporate Social Responsibility can help
the company in a lot of aspects such as better brand reputation, better customer loyalty, etc. Every
Tuesday, there are groups that are going to present their Good News Tuesday and I was really
amazed that there are companies here in the Philippines and around the world that does this kind
of activity to help the society and the company such as SM Foundation, Metrobank, and
LoveHopeFaith. These companies have their own strategies or techniques in doing their projects
with their chosen organization. The companies should also take into consideration the
stakeholders and not think about the possible advantages for the company. They should also
make sure that their company projects are going to be ethical. During our lesson about ethics in
businesses, I knew that there are companies here and outside the Philippines that does various
kinds of unethical behaviors. Our professor said some possible repercussions in making these
unethical things such as marketing risks and criminal proceedings. NutriAsia trended in different
Social Networking sites these past few months because of their unethical practices that is done
in their company. They faced a downturn in their profits and other negative effects happened
these days because of this.
We were told during the first few meetings that we should make sure that our group’s
community projects must be sustainable and for the long term. I think it is really hard to think of a
project that is sustainable for the community with the amount of budget that we have. During my
NSTPCW1 (Civic Welfare Training Service) our class, which is composed of 45 students, did a
mini library for the kids in the community. Each of us contributed 200-300 pesos in making the
project but we are not sure if they were able to maintain the project and not stealing the books in
the library after our last visit. Obviously, the people in the community is a big factor in making this
project sustainable and for the long term. If they’re not going to make use of the learnings that
they will gather during our 2nd visit in the community, they are also the one who will suffer from it.
SERVICE LEARNING JOURNAL # 2

Values are defined to be “a person's principles or standards of behavior; one's judgment

of what is important in life.” Values are important in attaining the goals or desires of an individual
in life. These values are going to be a primary key in achieving goals because these values will
make success attainable.
In the other hand, values are important in businesses and organizations. Businesses
should make sure that they are applying values while doing their projects in the community. The
company should not think only the profitability of the projects that they are doing in the community
but also think the learnings and experience that they will gain after doing the projects in the chosen
organization. Even though a company will surely benefit from their CSR activities in the
community, they should also make sure that values are still needed in doing these projects. They
should also do these projects thinking that their projects are ethically right and will not harm people
or animals. According to our classroom discussion, ethics means “is the activity of examining
one’s moral standards or the moral standards of society and asking how these standards apply
to our lives”. It is important for a business to care about ethics because it can provide a competitive
advantage for the company and can also give the company other kinds of advantages such as
growth.
Last few meetings ago, we did an activity about ranking our own terminal values and
instrumental values. It was really hard to rank those values because there are too many values
to be ranked. After a few minutes, our professor asked us to meet our groupmates to compare
our rankings with each other. Our top 5 in terminal values turned out to be comfortable life,
happiness, family security, inner harmony, and friendship while our top 5 in our instrumental
values turned out to be intellectual, loving, honest, broad minded, and logical. Comparing it to our
class’ ranking, the class’ top 5 in terminal values are family security, happiness, inner harmony,
comfortable life, and friendship while the class’ top 5 in instrumental values are loving, honest,
responsible, broad minded, and ambitious. Terminal Values are defined as “are values that we
think are most important or most desirable: while instrumental values are defined as “values that
deals with views on acceptable modes of conductor means of achieving the terminal values.”
Even though some of the values are the same from our group and the class, this shows that we
all have our own differences in perspectives on how we are going to achieve our goals in life. I
believe that these values can still change over time because of various factors such as technology,
family, shift in population, education, affluence, and peers. It is important to learn values because
an individual can better be able to predict a behavior in a situation. Furthermore, we can use these
values in going to the road of success and making sure that we still have these values at the end
of the road.
SERVICE LEARNING JOURNAL # 3

It is September 29 when we did our first visit in the company. We are oriented by Sir Jimi
that our organization will be Kababaihang Yumayabong Tungo Sa Kagalingan which is located at
Capoas St., Quezon City. As I was going to the school which is our meeting place, I was thinking
of possible projects that we can do that is sustainable and for the long term. There are a few
projects that came into my mind that will empower the women of the community but I don’t think
that it is sustainable. We left the school at 7:30 A.M. and I am happy because there are no
problems on the way to Quezon city. We arrived at the organization at about 8:20 A.M. and it is
really hot when I stepped out of the van. We roamed around the community and all I can say is
that I am blessed enough with the things that I have right now. Our community guide told that their
primary problem that they have right now is that it easily floods in their area during the rainy
seasons. We went to the nearest river in the community and it is full of trashes and their river
really stinks. As we are walking, I saw a boy who has a plastic full of trashes with him and threw
it at the river. This may be the reason why they are facing this kind of problem. The people in the
community may lack some knowledge in waste management or the discipline.
Afterwards, we went to the barangay hall to have an orientation on what the organization
is all about. We also talk about the possible projects that our group can do on our second visit.
We tried asking the community heads on what are the things that they need in the community and
we are really surprised because they suggested giving them sound system, tent, or a boat. These
three things that they suggested are obviously expensive and our group don’t have the budget in
giving these things to them. So our group thought of making a mini survival kit that the people can
use during emergency and during typhoon. This project is still in discussion because we might
lack in budget because there are a lot of members in the organization. We are still thinking of a
project that are cheap, sustainable, and for the long term.
I was really surprised because I thought we will be leaving the place at exactly 2:00 P.M.
but we left there at around 10:30 A.M. I am happy because I still have a lot of things to do. I was
really tired and sleepy after that visit but I learned a lot of things after that first trip. I have kept in
my mind the things that I think they need for their community. I think it will be good to give them
knowledge that they can use in different things and not material things that are not for the long
term.
