What is Waste ?

The discharge of solids, liquids or

gases to the environment for which
there is no economic value and
which cannot be recovered /
recycled.
Types of waste

Hazardous waste

Non Hazardous waste

What is Hazardous waste ?

Which could be highly toxic to

Humans, animals and plants are
Corrosive
Highly inflammable
Or explosive and
react when exposed to certain
things e.g. gases
What is a non-hazardous waste ?

A non hazardous waste is a

waste neither toxic to human
health nor dangerous to the
environment.
Four ‘R’s

Refuse
Reuse
Recycle
Reduce
Types of Hazardous waste

 Industrial Waste

 Hospital Waste

Certain types of
Household wastes

Segregation of waste

 Biodegradable

 Non biodegradable
Segregation of waste

Biodegradable
Kitchen waste, vegetables, fruits, flowers, leaves
from the garden and paper.
Non biodegradable
Recyclable waste - Plastics, paper, glass, metal
Toxic waste – condemned oil, waste from NDT
operations (solid & liquid), hydro testing water (with
inhibitors), paints, chemicals, oil filters, pesticide
containers, batteries, old medicines etc.
Soiled – hospital waste such as cloth soiled with
blood and body fluids
Colour coding of waste bins

Food Waste – Green

Medical Waste – White
Glass – Orange
General – Black
(Unusable)
Plastics – Orange
COSHH - Red
Recycling and Reuse

Recycling involves
collection of used and
discarded materials
processing these
materials and making
them into the new
products.
Some times that are recycled or reused

Paper – Old copies, old books, Paper bags,

newspapers, old greeting cards, cardboard
box.
Plastic – Containers, bottles, bags and
sheets.
Glass and ceramics – Bottles, plates, cup
and bowls
Miscellaneous – Old cans, utensils, clothes
and furniture
Advantages of Recycling

Less utilization of
raw material
Makes surroundings cleaner and healthier
Saves on landfill space
Saves money
Reduces environmental impacts arising from
waste treatment and disposal
Reduces the amount of energy required to
manufacture new products.
Impacts of waste on health

Infections

Chronic
diseases

Accidents

How to select a waste disposal
contractor?
Accreditation certificate from Government
Environmental Agencies.
Accreditation certificate should have approval for
Hazardous waste disposal in case if the facility is
going to generate/generates such waste.
Facilities of the contractor and their technical
partnership company need to be visited.
Approved dump site details need to be collected
and the same need to be inspected.
