Feature Name: Idle Paging Repetition

Feature ID: RAN3292

Technology: 3G
Land: Nokia

INTRODUCTION
Why Paging?- Paging is necessary in order for the CN to know to which BTS and cell a specific UE is
currently linked.
• In Idle mode, paging is always initiated by the CN.
• In CS paging, the CN and further the RNC broadcast paging messages through base stations of the
location area in which the UE is situated.
• In PS paging, the CN and further the RNC broadcast paging messages through base stations of the
routing area in which the UE is situated.
• The paging of the UE is initiated and scheduled by the RNC. The RNC packs pages to a L3 paging
message and transmits them transparently over the Iub. Upon receipt of the paging message and if
access to the network is allowed, the addressed UE initiates the RRC Connection setup procedure.
• Paging types:
- Paging Type1- Idle, Cell-PCH, URA-PCH
- Paging Type2- Cell DCH and Cell-FACH, (this feature is more about paging in idle mode).

FEATURE OVERVIEW

- RRM & Telecom -> Supplementary Telecom Features

• To increase success probability for paging, the paging messages are repeated autonomously
by RNC in case UE is in idle mode.
• RNC repeats the paging only if there is available space in the paging channel.

FEATURE INTRODUCTION

• The RAN3292 Idle Paging Repetition feature

improves the probability of success in
paging an user equipment (UE) in idle
mode.
• This is done by the radio network controller
(RNC) repeats paging message up to two
times, depending on the load of the paging
channel.

WAY FORWARD

Since results are promising as far as CS Idle Mode paging repetition are concerned and has improved
KPI, therefore, it is suggested to ROLL OUT on ALL Nokia land RNCs.
