PAST PROGRESIVE

We use past progressive or continuous:


1.- ACTIONS WERE IN PROGRESS AT SPECIAL TIME IN THE PAST EXAMPLE:
Peter was reading a book yesterday evening.
2.-TWO ACTIONS WERE HAPPENING AT THE SAME TIME (THE ACTIONS DON´T
INFLUENCE EACH OTHER) EXAMPLE:
Anne was writing a letter while Steve was reading The New York Times.
3.- TOGETHER WITH SIMPLE PAST EXAMPLE:
When we were sitting at the breakfast table, the telephone rang
4.- REPEATED ACTIONS IRRITATING THE SPEAKER (WITH ALWAYS FOREVER AND
CONSTANTLY). EXAMPLE:
Andrew was always coming late
PAST PROGRESSIVE FORM:
SUBJECT+WAS/WERE + INFINITIVE+ING
AFFIRMATIVE: He was talking with the customer while you were getting a new acquisition
NEGATIVE: (WAS NOT/WASN´T – WERE NOT/WEREN´T)
The merchandise was not setting in the market yesterday
They weren´t reselling the godos in the market last week
INTERROGATIVE: Was he purchasing stocks of the new company last year?
Yes he was / No, He wasn´t
Were you getting an agreement with the buyer? Yes I was/ No, I wasn´t
TIME EXPRESSIONS: Yesterday (morning, afternoon) last (week, month, weekend, year
night Monday) two days ago, three weeks ago, one hour ago.

Put the verbs into the correct form (past progressive).

1. When I phoned my friends, they (play) monopoly.

2. Yesterday at six I (prepare) dinner.

3. The kids (play) in the garden when it suddenly began to rain.

4. I (practise) the guitar when he came home.

5. We (not / cycle) all day.

6. While Aaron (work) in his room, his friends (swim) in the pool.
