Prerequisites

1. Advisory: English 51 and 56, each with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or
Assessment Skill Level W5 and R5.
2. Computer literacy.

Course Description

A survey course to develop one’s listening perception through lectures, recordings, films,
and concerts. A discussion of the basic music elements, such as melody, rhythm,
harmony, and timbre as well as a historical perspective of all musical periods from
Western Europe (Middle Ages to the present) will be covered. In addition, other subjects
such as ethnic, jazz, rock, vocal, instrumental, and contemporary music of the 20th
century will be discussed.

Number of Units

Three (3).

Lecture Hours Per Week

Three (3) Hours.

Course Objectives

To introduce the basic fundamentals of music, such as melody, rhythm, harmony, and
timbre as well as acquaint students with the stylistic differences in music from various
periods throughout history, including the social, political, and economic climate of the
time. Students will learn selected composers and their masterworks of Western Europe
and America from the Middle Ages to the present.

Methods of Instruction
(Course may include):

1. Lectures and class discussion.


2. Listening to music by way of compact discs, tapes, live concerts, and teacher
performances.
3. Audio visual aids.
4. Field trips.
5. Oral, listening, and written quizzes, midterm, and final exam.
6. Writing assignments.
7. Critique of a live performance.
8. Creative project.

In-Class Participation Requirements Online

This course is highly interactive and will require critical thinking and a strong online
attendance. A student's attendance, participation, motivation, and a willingness to work
with your voice, hands, and feet are very important to derive the maximum benefit from
this course. Regular attendance online is both expected and necessary to successful
completion of course. Excused absences as a result of an emergency will be accepted
(see college catalog for more details).

Final Exam / Protocol

A written and listening exam will be administered during final examination week (the last
class meeting of the semester).
