Assignment 1

Energy required vs. Energy Consumed

Rachakonda Shri Rama Akshay

BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), is the amount of energy per unit time that a person needs to keep the body
functioning at rest. Some of those processes are breathing, blood circulation, controlling body
temperature, cell growth, brain and nerve function, and contraction of muscles.

For Adult Male:

BMR= 66 + (6.3 x body weight in lbs.) + (12.9 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)
(1346.795)(@26 years age)

For Adult Female:

BMR = 655 + (4.3 x weight in lbs.) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)
(1218.318)(@26 years age)

Amount of calories required per day = PAL*BMR.

Male= 1616.154 cal/day.(1.879587102 Wh)

Female= 1461.9819 cal/day.(1.7002849497 Wh )

Section 5.3

PAL= Physical activity level,

For resting body PAL= 1.2.

The daily calorie need is the BMR value multiplied by a factor with a value between 1.2 and
1.9, depending on activity level.
The most commonly used equation is the Mifflin - St Jeor equation, which is what our BMR Calculator uses:
BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age(y) + 5 (1342.5 ) (man)

BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age(y) - 161 (1087.625) (woman)

Energy Consumed:

Electrical Energy requirement by western region.(checking for 2017-2018).

http://cea.nic.in/reports/annual/lgbr/lgbr-2018.pdf

Total population of western region= 276747029.(@ end of 2017)

http://www.indiaonlinepages.com/population/population-of-maharashtra.html

Per capita energy= 0.108402248KWh (in a month)

3.6134 Wh per day

Energy consumed by petrol, diesel fuels:

Crude oil consumption of India during 2016-2017(during 2017-18 it declined but a

fractionally)
245.36 MMT(million metric ton) or 297,406,060,606.06 liters in a year.
http://mospi.nic.in/sites/default/files/publication_reports/Energy_Statistics_2018.pdf

Assuming 84 percent of crude oil by volume is is used for energy purpose

https://sites.google.com/site/aboutcrudeoil/home

2.498210909*10^11 litre is used for fuel.

*assumption all crude oil is used as petrol*.

Density of petrol is about 0.75 kg/ l

https://www.quora.com/How-much-energy-is-released-by-burning-1-litre-of-petrol

weight of petrol = 1.873658182*10^11.

Calorific value of petrol= 46 MJ/kg.

Energy produced= 8.618827636*10^18 joules= 2.3941187878*10^12 Kwh

Average energy consumed by petroleum product in western region= 8650.928599 Kwh in a

year. Or 24.303 Kwh in a day.

So Total energy consumed in western region*= 24.307 Kwh (electric + petroleum) per
day.
*Westren region consists of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
