BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), is the amount of energy per unit time that a person needs to keep the body
functioning at rest. Some of those processes are breathing, blood circulation, controlling body
temperature, cell growth, brain and nerve function, and contraction of muscles.

The daily calorie need is the BMR value multiplied by a factor with a value between 1.2 and
1.9, depending on activity level.
The most commonly used equation is the Mifflin - St Jeor equation, which is what our BMR Calculator uses:
