Offensive coordinators are always looking for easy completions

and using the split end power will give you easy completions on
1st and 2nd down run situations.
Blocking:
For the offensive line, the concept is simple. They will “block four
down to the WLB.” Against an over front (Diagram 1), the backside
guard and tackle block the 3 and 5 technique. The playside guard
blocks down on the DT/NG and the center skip pulls and blocks
the WLB. The center needs to read the play side tackle’s block on
the DE. If the DE stays as a 5 technique, the Tackle will widen
him to open up the hole and the Center wraps in the B gap and
blocks the LB.

If the DE stunts into the B gap the LB will be crashing off the
edge and as the center sees this, he will execute a kick out block
on the LB. If the playside tackle sees the DE slide into a 4I and
the LB creeping outside, he can make a kick call to alert the
Center to kick out the end man on the line of scrimmage
(EMOLS).
Against an under front, the same concept applies, but the
backside guard becomes the puller. IN this case, the backside
tackle blocks the 5 technique, the center blocks back on the NG,
the play side guard blocks the 3 technique and the play side
tackle blocks the 5 technique. The backside guard will then skip
pull and blocks the WLB. This will be a tight wrap into the A gap
unless the defensive line stunts, in which case the guard would
wrap into the B gap or execute a kick out block.
Against an odd front, whether it be a 3-3 stack or a 3-4, the back
side tackle will block the DE using a seal and hinge technique to
protect the B gap. If there is B gap pressure, he will cut down the
DE or LB. If there is no B gap pressure, the tackle will hinge and
block the outside defender which will be the DE. The center base
blocks the NG, the play side guard and tackle fan block the DE
and OLB. The backside guard wraps into the play side A gap and
blocks the LB.

When we see a bear front, we will usually freeze check to the

quick game. If we think that we can block them, then the
backside tackle will cut the 3 technique and the center will base
block the NG. The play side guard and tackle will then combo
block the 3 technique to the MLB and the backside Guard will
kick out the 5 technique.
Coaching the QB:
The key to this play, as with any option concept, is the QB read.
That read in the split end power read is the MLB/backside LB. The
MLB is the conflict defender, meaning we must ensure that he
can’t be right whether he defends the run or pass. If the MLB
flows with the run the QB puts his eyes on the Sam SLB for the
throw read. If Sam squeezes the pop pass, which we call “looky,”
the QB throws key route to the #2 receiver.
Conversely, if the SLB widens and covers the key route, the QB
will throw the looky pass to the #3 receiver. If the MLB widens
and covers the looky, the QB will hand off the ball to the RB.

The QB will also get a pre-snap read to help him with the speed
of his decision. If he sees the MLB aligned in the A gap, he knows
that he will be throwing the football because there is no way that
an A gap LB can defend the looky pass.
To stop our looky pass, some teams are capping our receivers
and playing single high safety. That means that they have 6 in the
box and they are playing our split end one on one. I have always
believed that one on one is as good as one on zero. To discourage
capping our receivers we attack one on one with our quick game
throws. My favorite quick throws are Fade, Hitch, and Hitch and
Go.

Additional Looks
Here are a few different ways we can formation this concept:
Adding Tempo:
I like using our split end power play in our tempo mode. I can call
3 Right Panther (Trips right split end power left) or 3 Left Pitt
(Trips left split end power right) and we have the play. By using 3
words we get formation and play.
I also like using this concept when we are on the hash. The
defense has to cover our looky and key and there is a lot grass to
cover when the ball is aligned on the hash. This play is also a
great fit when I am not sure what to call. Split End power can be
a run play or a pass play. If I freeze check the play, we can
ensure that we have a downhill offensive play called.
