Taghum Hall
FUNdraiser
The bright and beautiful reno-
vated Taghum Hall, located along the
shores of the Kootenay River, 10 kilo-
metres west of Nelson, is the cultural
cornerstone of the Taghum area. It is
operated by an independent, com-
munity based society of members
and volunteers. The hall hosts vibrant
community programming of special
events and ongoing activities. Any-
one in the region can become a mem-
ber to help keep the hall going and to
shape its future.
It all started back in the early 1950s
when the local Russian Doukhobor
community needed a place to meet
and worship. They formed a society
and obtained the present plot of land
near the old Taghum bridge, on the
site of a former sawmill. With lots of
volunteer labour and little money,
they built the hall from salvaged
buildings from the Lemon Creek Jap-
anese Internment Camp. The original
building was wood heated and had
no indoor plumbing. Over the years,
the hall has served as a weekly place
for Doukhobor worship, plus as a
venue for weddings, funerals, meet-
ings, voting, dinners and dances for
both the Russian community and the
community at large. The strong vol-
unteer base has kept the hall as a vital
part of the community.

Improvements were made gradually
on shoestring budgets over time. The
hardwood floor was salvaged from
the fire damaged Trafalgar Junior
High in 1967. Indoor washrooms and
an expanded kitchen were added as a
BC Centennial project in 1971. The
wood furnace was replaced by a pro-
pane heater. By 2010, the hall was in
need of an upgrade, but community
members expressed a strong desire to
keep the hall community owned. The
society worked on obtaining fund-
ing from many sources such as the
Federal Gas Tax/Community Works
Funding, Columbia Basin Trust and
the Regional District of Central Koo-
tenay. In the summer of 2014 reno-
vations finally began. The building
was brought up to modern struc-
tural standards, with a new accessible
entry and washrooms, new windows
and a deck built to overlook the river.
New energy efficient heating, insula-
tion and lighting were added.
The hall now starts another chapter
of its life with modern standards, but
with the same community spirit that
has kept the hall going. Many people
in the region have fond memories
of events that have taken place in
Taghum Hall over the years. We hope
to continue that tradition.
Taghum Hall is hosting a family
dance FUNdraiser on Friday, July
19, 7 pm until late, with classic rock
band Rail Town. $15 advance tickets
are available at Eddy Music in Nelson
and Taghum Shell gas station. Tickets
are $20 at the door. Kids under 12 are

within 55 km of Castlegar that would benefit from using their
Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good options.
Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a qualified professional per-
forming soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and
delivery costs of Celgrow soil amendment based on access with a
large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accom-
modate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two major components of
Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process
and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria
are a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible
for spreading and incorporating Celgrow into their soil.

Development Institute (RDI)
at Selkirk College is proud
to announce it will be work-
ing with nine municipalities
in the Kootenay and Bound-
ary region in their efforts to
strengthen their resilience to
the effects of climate change.
RDI has been chosen by the Federation of Canadian
Municipalities (FCM) to help these communities in the
areas of climate change assessment and capacity build-
ing in support of local climate change adaptation efforts.
Municipalities are on the front lines of climate change, so
it is important they are developing plans and implement-
ing actions to become more resilient.
Through contemporary peer learning networks focused
on climate change resilience activities and training spe-
cific to this region, the project will help local leaders to
integrate climate change adaptation into new or existing
plans and systems. Participating municipalities will work
with their peers toward similar goals using innovative
approaches and solutions to the challenges they face.
“In April 2019, the board of directors of the Regional
District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) declared a cli-
mate action imperative in recognition of the global and
local state of climate crisis,” says Sangita Sudan, RDCK’s
general manager of development services. “The oppor-
tunity to participate in this new collaborative partner-
ship focused on increasing local government’s capacity
to address key climate risks and impacts such as flood,
wildfire and extreme weather couldn’t be more timely.”
The RDI has been supporting climate adaptation in the
region since 2014 and is pleased to receive $239,000 in
federal funding to continue this work.
“Selkirk College’s Applied Research and Innovation
Centre, which houses the RDI, is pleased to continue to
support climate adaptation efforts in the region through
research and capacity building support,” says Dr. Terri
MacDonald, director of applied research and innovation
at Selkirk College. “These types of initiatives create valu-
able experiential learning opportunities for our students
as they work alongside our community partners and fac-
ulty advisors to advance innovation in our region.”
The RDCK joins the City of Nelson, City of Cran-
brook, Town of Golden, City of Kimberley, Village of Sil-
verton, City of Rossland, Regional District of Kootenay
Boundary and the Regional District of East Kootenay in
addressing shared climate adaptation challenges through
this project.
The work with these communities is funded through
FCM’s Climate Adaptation Partner grants available
through FCM’s Municipalities for Climate Innovation
Program (MCIP). MCIP, delivered by FCM and funded
by the Government of Canada, is a five-year, $75 million
program designed to support and encourage Canadian
municipalities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and
adapt to climate change.

Greens to choose candidate
The Green Party of Canada (GPC) Kootenay-Colum-
bia Electoral District Association (EDA) is pleased to
announce that we will be choosing our candidate for the
upcoming federal election on July 14. With the Green
‘wave’ currently sweeping the nation, we have two out-
standing individuals vying for the role. Recent polling
data informs us that Green Party leader Elizabeth May
outranks other federal party leaders in terms of leader-
ship and trustworthiness.
There will be three opportunities for the public to meet
and question the prospective candidates before July 14.
In Nelson on June 25, 7 pm at the Hume Hotel; on July
4 in Fernie; and July 7 in Revelstoke. Details of these two
meetings still need to be finalized. The two contestants are
Abra Brynne of Nelson and Kerri Wall of Fernie. Both will
be speaking and answering questions at all three events.
In order to vote, GPC members must be Kootenay-
Columbia residents, members for at least 30 days and
be at least 14 years of age. To participate in choosing the
candidate, the Nomination Contest must be attended in
person. (The meeting will be held simultaneously in three
locations around the riding.)
