III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Daily Routine (________ will lead the prayer)

1. Prayer “Our Father in heaven holy be thy name thy
Let us all stand. Lead the prayer, _________. kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and
forgive us in our sins, as we forgive those who sins
against us and deliver us from evil. Amen”

2. Greetings
Good morning, class!
Good morning, Ma’am!
You may sit down.
Thank you, Ma’am.
3. Checking of Attendance
Do we have any absentee today, group 1?
Group 2? Group 3? Group 4?
(Students will mention the absentee/s if ever there
is/are)
4. Checking of Assignment
Bring out your assignments. Pass your paper to
your respective leader. Leaders, collect your
member’s papers.

B. Review of the Past Lesson

The assignment that you answered was all about
Laws of Exponent. What are the three Laws of
Exponents? Yes, ______.
 1.Product Rule of Exponents
 2. Power Rule for Exponents
 3. Power of a Product Rule Ma’am

Very good!______
And How is the 1st rule?

Multiplying powers having the same base, just add

the exponent.
Correct!

How about the Power Rule?

Finding the power of a power of a base, you need

to multiply the exponents.
Right!

And the Power of a Product Rule?

To find the power of a product, find the power of

each factor then multiply the resulting powers.

Correct!

Ok on the board _________

Simplify this expression using the law of exponent,
(7c)2 = ? Yes ____________
49c2

Very good _____________

Another, simplify this one (x5 y3 )(x4 y5)

On the board _____________
X9 y8

Correct!

C. Motivation
Class, are you familiar with this toy? (Showing the
Rubik’s cube)

Yes Ma’am!
Who among you know how to solve this puzzle,
any representative from the group? (Distribute the
cube to the group). And the first one to solve or fix
the Rubik’s will receive a reward.
(after 5 minutes someone solved the cube)

Great! How did you do that __________?

By using patters Ma’am!

Why do you think patterns are important in life?

And in Mathematics?

Patterns or rules can make life easy, and it will

help solve problems easy.

Exactly!

Do you know that patterns are also useful in

finding products of polynomials?
D. Presentation
Today, you will learn more about Special
Product.
Special Products, binomials that are easy to
multiply than others because their products follow
patterns or rules.
Do you understand class?

The first special product is the square of a Yes,

binomial. It may be a sum or a difference of the
two terms. Let’s have the first case,
SQUARE OF THE SUM
(a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2
In order to get the product of this expression, you
need to follow some patterns.
1.Square the first term
2. Twice the product of the first term and the
second term.
3. Square of the second term.

Let’s have an example:

(x + 9)2 = X2 + 2(x)(9) + 92
= x2 + 18x + 81

By following the pattern, let us try to answer the

given expression:

(2x + 4)2=
Who wants to try? Yes ___________

=(2X)2 + 2(2x)(4) + (4)2

= 4x + 16x + 16
Very Good!

The second case:

SQUARE OF THE DIFFERENCE
(a - b)2
Class, you will also use the same pattern just like
the square of the sum, the only difference is the
sign of the middle term.
Let us try to solve the given expression:
(x – 6)2= x + 2(x)(-6) + (-6)2
= x – 18x + 36

Try to answer this example, (3x – 2)2 = ?

= (3x)2 + 2(3x)(-2) + (-2)2
= 9x2 – 12x + 4

Next special product is the Sum and Difference of

Two Terms. (a + b)(a – b) = a2 – b2

The product of the Sum and Difference of Two

Terms is the square of the first term minus the
square of the second term.

In here you can also use the FOIL method.

Are you familiar with FOIL method class?
Ok, So What FOIL stands for? Yes __________ Yes Ma’am

Correct! F-irst O-uter I-nner L-ast

Class, Let’s have a group activity. Leaders assign

one of your members to be a reporter and a
recorder. I will give u an activity sheet; each group
will investigate, discuss and complete the table on
the copy given to you.

(See the activity and the answer key below.)

Expressions Solutions Steps Used

1. (a + 4)2 = ? =a2 + 2(a)(4) + 42 Followed the pattern use in
=a + 8a + 16 Square of the Sum.
2.(2 x – 4)2 = ? Followed the pattern use in
Square of the Difference.
3. (3k + m)(4k – m) = ? =(3k + m)(4k – m) We used FOIL Method.
= 12k2 – 3km + 4km – m2
= 12k2 + km – m2
4. (a + 3)2 = ? = (a + 3)2 Follow the rule or pattern used
= (a)(a) + 2(a)(3) + (3)(3) in the Square of a Sum.
= a2 + 6a + 9
5. (x – 2)(x + 2) = (x – 2)(x + 2) Use the distributive property or
= x2 + 2x – 2x – 4 the FOIL method or simply
= x2 - 4 follow the pattern in the
Difference of Two Squares.
Combine or add or subtract
similar terms.

E. Generalization
How can you identify the product of a square of
a binomial? A sum and difference of two terms?
The product of two binomials? How can you find
the certain products of two binomials, product of
the sum and difference of two terms and a square
of a binomial? In Finding the products of two terms and a square
of a binomial we should follow the patterns or
rules used.
Good Answer!
