NEWBORN MILESTONES
• A baby is ready to smile at six weeks. Be

BABY TEETH

The first tooth usually appears anytime from
2-12 months after birth. Here are some signs
that the teeth are on their way:
• Heavy drooling, yes, you’ll be impressed!
• Gnashing and chewing on anything they can
get their hands on.
• Wakefulness and even a light fever can de-
velop from teething pains.

HANG ON TIGHT!
Bath time should be short. Take great
care when placing the newborn in the tiny
tub, positioning one arm behind the back
with your open hand supporting the neck
and head, keeping it there at all times.
Continue this practice even when the
baby is able to sit upright. As a natural
reaction to an unknown situation the little
one might cry at first, but soon enough
bath time will become a high point of the
day. Remember - a bit of crooning in the
bathroom never went amiss and baby
will always be your #1 fan!
TAKE THE PLUNGE…
5 cm’s of water is all you need to give
baby a proper bath. Delicately soap and
wash every part of the body using gentle
baby products: get behind the ears, arms
and neck, under the feet, knees and tush.
Never scrub! Take baby out and wrap
in a soft hooded towel, gently pat dry.
While your baby still has the umbilical
cord stump, stick to quick rubdowns
with a soft baby sponge and a bowl of
warm water. Keep your baby wrapped in
a towel and clean then dry one limb at a
time. This way you to avoid submerging
the cord stump which needs to stay as
dry as possible. Once the cord has fallen
off, baby is ready for his first dip in the
bath.
CHANGING TIMES
STORMY WEATHER!
You might get rumbles of thunder and
flash floods but that’s no reason to declare
a state of emergency. Within no time you
will be a baby changing master! It’s a de-

and a small basin of warm water, with

Place the diaper under the tush and re-
member, it’s got to be absorbent for new-
borns, then place your hand under the
tush and lift gently (sliding the diaper into
position).
The key here is line up baby with the dia-
per, not too high or too low. Put the diaper
on with the colorful stripe at the front and
fasten. Diapers with these are the easiest
to put on and sit easier on the tush. As
time passes the growing child will need
room to maneuver, so choose an anato-
mic shaped diaper for baby’s freedom.

This amazing new life stage you’re in now is one wild adventure you’re
better off not going into unshaven. Maybe you like the cool guy look
but baby won’t appreciate it, ‘soft on the outside and on the inside’ are
the profiles your child will want you to lead with. Let’s not forget Mum,
she’s going to need you to show the way too, and during feedings is
the best time where you can step in.
NIGHT OWLS
Feeding and Helping out Mum.
If she’s nursing she’ll be exhausted (this is
very tiring – not forgetting she’s just car-
ried the wee thing around for 9 months)
and marginally less so if she’s making up
a bottle. Not to mention that major brow-
nie-points can be earned here.
At first baby is going to be up every three
hours looking for a feed. So, when your
sweetheart is done feeding she’ll want to
kick back or go to bed. Baby is ready for
action now – even if it’s 0347hrs, little Zoe
or Zack is up for it! You step in here and let
Mum do what she feels like. Doing baby
burps takes a little patience and is a key
bonding time for you both. It’s also like
dancing cheek-to-cheek so try not to let
stubble or the five o’clock shadow get in
the way of this peaceful intimate moment
(nor will it help the little one’s digestion!).
THE SMALL HOURS.
It might seem daunting but more quality
time awaits Dad here, while the city sleeps
he is up absorbing the special tranquility
and peacefulness - no better time suits
better being with baby more.
UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
Having a child jump into your routine mi-
ght make you feel tired but paradoxically,
the 3-4 month old baby will offer you the
opportunity to get some fatigue-busting
exercise, and to have a coach who squeals
with joy as you workout together. Apart
from getting solid biceps from carrying
the baby around all the time, you could
get a solid workout by playing ‘airplane’
, an ‘extreme sport’ for the little one and
for you a good way to work those abdo’s
and arm muscles.

GET TO GRIPS WITH PUSHUPS.
This is probably the only time when ‘in your
