Lick 20 (Long Line)

... And lastly there’s this beast of a lick! This one is actually played over the second half of
the progression, which goes like this:
|Am7 |C7 |Fmaj7 | Bb7 |
|Bm7 |E7 |Am7 F#m7b5 |Bm7b5 E7|

There’s a few new variations introduced to the progression here, such as the Bb7. This chord
is a tritone substitute for E7 and can be treated as such or as Bb Lydian b7. However, this
chord doesn’t resolve back to the tonic Am, but instead goes to the II-chord again (careful,
it’s Bm7 this time, no flattened fifth, choose Dorian as a go-to scale), which functionally leads
to the V (E7) and back to I (Am). Finally there’s another little turnaround with another minor
II-V, which is proceeded by a F#m7b5 chord. You can treat this chord with the F# locrian
scale, but I view it more as an Amin chord with an F# in the bass and think A Dorian.

The actual lick is an accumulation of many different melodic concepts, be it arpeggios,

substitutions, embellishments, scales, sequences. All thrown into one big melting pot. Now
it’s your task to take little elements from this giant lick, learn to understand it, manipulate it
