Course Objectives: Computing is becoming increasingly mobile. Internet services are now primarily available on wireless devices, with
desktop browsing the exception. All this has led to huge growth in the wireless phone market and the success of wireless data services. This
course will help in understanding fundamental concepts, current developments in mobile communication systems and wireless computer
networks.

Pre-requisites: Basic knowledge of Communication systems, Radio frequency spectrum, networks

Course Contents/Syllabus:

Module I : 20%

PCS Architecture, Mobility Management, Networks Signaling.


Global System for mobile communication(GSM) system overview: GSM Architecture, Mobility Management,
Networks Signaling
Module II: 25%
GPRS Architecture, GPRS Network Nodes,
Mobile Data communication: WLANs(Wireless LANs) IEEE 802.11 standard, Mobile IP.
Wireless Application Protocol (WAP): The mobile internet standard, WAP Gateway and Protocols, WML
Module III : 25%

Introduction to International Mobile Telecommunications 2000(IMT 2000) vision, W-CDMA, and CDMA 2000,
Quality of services in 3G
Wireless Local Loop: Introduction to WLL, Architecture, wireless local loop Technologies.

Module IV : 10%

Global Mobile satellite systems: case studies of the IRIDIUM and GLOBALSTAR systems. GPS satellite
navigation

Module V: 20%

Introduction to virtual networks, Blue tooth technology, Bluetooth protocols, Advanced techniques in mobile
computing

Student Learning Outcomes: After completion of this course student will be able to

 Apply the concept of 2G, 3G for further enhancement in mobile communication system.
 Analyze different protocol stack for the mobile network systems.
 Design algorithm for better frequency reuse and spreading sequence to enhance the performance of existing cellular network.
 Understand the design of mobile networks systems and analyze them.

Pedagogy for Course Delivery:


This course will be delivered through lectures. A continuous evaluation will be done through assignments and viva.
