“BIGBOOKS” AS MOTHER TONGUE- BASED INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

For GRADE 1 PUPILS

III. Background/Rationale:

Language experts claimed that is easier for pupils to learn when mother tongue is
use in the teaching learning process including the learning of second language.

With that aforementioned statement, Talisayan Central School decided to create

MTB-MLE reading materials and design teaching guides based on developed reading
materials to enhance the reading comprehension of pupils particularly in Grade1. It is
believed that development of ‘Bigbooks” is one of the learning materials that can be
produced using pupil’s native language. Bigbooks contain reading materials printed in
bigger book format for children’s use. These are usually narratives which are quite
appealing to children because of big illustrations which could entice them to involve in
print and later in reading.
