2019 Math Final

Mr. Martínez’s STUDY GUIDE

I know that the amount of “stuff” you have to review for the exam can be
overwhelming. This is why I decided to write this guide! I am hoping that using this
guide will help you “focus” and hone-in on what you need to know to succeed on
your exam.

As you go through the guide, and you are comfortable with a concept, check it off!
Then, before the exam, go through it to make sure you know them. If you have any
questions, let me know before Wednesday!

IMPORTANT: You are going to need a calculator, as you may not be able to use
your phone. If you have difficulty securing one for the exam, let me know
before Wednesday and I’ll help you (my pleasure!).

What Does the Exam Look Like?

This year’s exam will consist of 50 questions. In preparation for the upcoming two
years of middle-school math, the exam will follow the following format:

• 40 Multiple-Choice questions (calculator use allowed)
• 5 Numerical Response questions
• 5 Non-Calculator questions (Do not worry! They are very similar to the
non-calculator questions we have done in class)

What do I know to Study???
(Glad you asked…)

1. How to convert fractions into decimals, decimals into fractions, and percent into
fractions and decimals.

2. Know how to multiply decimal numbers by 10, 100, etc:

3. Remember the “special case” of a repeating decimal into a fraction: To convert a
repeating decimal into a fraction, the numerator is the actual repeating
number, and the denominator is either 9 (if the numerator has one digit), 99 (if
the denominator has two digits), etc.

4. Rules of divisibility, including why 0 can divide no number.

5. Components (parts) of an expression and/or an equation:

6. To EVALUATE an expression, all you have to do is substitute the value of the
variable given INTO the equation:

7. ANY TIME you see MORE THAN ONE OPERATION, you MUST USE THE ORDER OF
OPERATIONS:

8. Rules for ADDING and SUBTRACTING INTEGERS:

As you can see above, to SUBTRACT ADD THE OPPOSITE

9. Adding and subtracting FRACTIONS:

• Fractions with like denominator: LEAVE the DENOMINATOR as if, and add
or subtract the NUMERATOR:

• Fractions with unlike denominators:
- Your goal is to multiply one or both fractions by a number that would
make both fractions end up with the same denominator.
- Remember that the “like” denominator is the COMMON DENOMINATOR.

10. How to convert MIXED numbers into fractions, and vice versa.

11. When having to order or compare numbers, MAKE SURE YOU CONVERT
THEM ALL TO DECIMALS. That way, you can compare the numbers place by
place, making the ordering easier.

12. An ORDERED PAIR is always written (𝒙, 𝒚).

13. Know the QUADRANTS on the CARTESIAN PLANE:

14. Transformations in the Cartesian plane:

• Rotations: The figure is rotated about a point. It can be rotated clockwise
or counter clockwise. The most commonly angles for rotation are
90°, 180°, 270°.
• Reflections: “Mirror images.” The image appears inverted. Images are
reflected on horizontal lines, vertical lines or diagonal lines.
• Translations: The image DOES NOT CHANGE, as it only moves up, down, to
the right or to the left. That is, the image will appear moved.

15. Input/Output Tables:
• When you are given a relation, you can create an input/output table:
- The INPUT,the x-values, are the values you will substitute in on the given
relation. This is the first column.
- The OUTPUT, the y-values, is the second column. Here, you write the
“output” you get when substituting in the input values.

16. Using the REGLA DE TRES to calculate %:

17. Parts of a circle:

18. Know how to calculate the area of: PARALLELOGRAMS, TRIANGLES and
CIRCLES: But no worries, you will provided with a formula sheet.

Remember that:
r2 = 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑢𝑠 𝑥 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑢𝑠

19. Unit 7: Mean, Median, Range, Mode

• When given the set of numbers, WRITE THEM IN INCREASING ORDER right
away!
• Mean: the sum of all numbers divided by the amount of numbers
• Median: the middle number. If there are 2 middle numbers, add them up
and divide by 2.
• Range: the largest number minus the smallest number.
• Mode: the number (or numbers) that repeat the most. Remember that it is
possible to have NO mode.

20. Know what an OUTLIER is, and remember that:
• If the outlier is high, it will “pull” the mean towards it. (Increases the mean).
• If the outlier is low, it will “pull” the mean towards it. (Decreases the mean).

21. PROBABILITY:
• The events are “independent” from each other. That is, whatever happens
with the first event’s outcomes does not influence the outcomes of the second
event.
• Make a “tree” with the outcomes of the first event AND the outcomes of the
second event.
• Make sure you write ALL the final outcomes in a column. That way it is easier
for you to determine the answers to what you are being asked.
