MISSION STATEMENT
Vision and mission as perceived by
H. H. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad-III

“The progress of a nation requires that its people

should be educated. Knowledge is a necessity of man.

It instills in him a desire to question and to investigate,

which leads him on the path of progress. Education, in

the broadest sense, must be spread everywhere.

Progress can only be achieved by the spread of

education. Cooperation is necessary to achieve

any worthy end and this readiness to

cooperate will not be found in people

if they are not educated.

FACULTY OF SCIENCE

India’s internationally renowned The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda has blossomed from

the Baroda College which is one of the oldest centers of learning in western India. The Maharaja

Sayajirao University of Baroda is the only state university with a residential, unitary character

having English as sole medium of instruction. Faculty of Science is a constituent institution of The

Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda under its direct management and control. Faculty began

as an integral part of Baroda College which was founded by His Highness Sir Sayajirao

Gaekwad of Baroda in the year 1881. He also started the Sayaji Jubilee Institute in 1933 and

housed all science subjects under it. Foundation stone of Sayaji Jubilee institute was laid by Sir

Daniel Rufus Isaacs, then Viceroy and Governor General of India in 1926.

The efforts of establishing a Residential University at Baroda was initiated by Maharaja Sayajirao

in 1908, but it became a reality only during the rule of His Highness Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad. The

Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda came into existence on 30th April 1949. Through the

constitution of the University, all the science departments were reconstituted as Faculty of

Science. The Faculty of Science steadily made significant strides in various disciplines of science

and attracted students from all over India and from other countries. It soon developed into a

cosmopolitan center of education. The growth of the faculty thus amply complimented the

pioneering efforts of the great visionary, Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad, who had taken great pains

to improve science education.

successfully earning 144 Credits. A theory course requiring instructions of 1 hour per week per semester is
considered as ONE CREDIT theory course. In case of practical course, ONE CREDIT requires 2 hours’
laboratory teaching per week per semester.

the Country in general and Gujarat in particular, Faculty of Science introduced 3-Year
undergraduate Programme leading to Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) degree in year
2000 on a higher payment basis. In the last 16 years, since its inception, the programme has
earned a very good reputation in the state of Gujarat and is regarded as the most advanced BCA
programme in this part of the country. From year 2010 the BCA programme has been restructured
according to Choice Based Credit System (CBCS).

Eligibility
A candidate fulfilling the following conditions will be considered eligible for BCA admission.
1. A candidate must have passed H.S.C. (General/ Science/ Vocational) Examination of
Gujarat State or an equivalent examination with 40% of marks in aggregate and English as
one of the subjects as a regular candidate.

2. A candidate who has passed an equivalent examination from any other examining body will
have to produce eligibility certificate from The M.S. University of Baroda during first year of
admission.
3. Candidates who have passed their HSC exam in last three years (i.e. passing out in 2015
will also be considered for admission.

PROGRAMME

Outline of the Course

The syllabus for the course has been designed to provide basic knowledge about the relevant
branches of Science that contribute towards the understanding of the environment and ultimately
facilitate environment management. In the first two semesters, basics of environment have been
introduced. In the third and fourth semesters, the aim is to create a more advanced level of
understanding and the role of various natural and human factors in the deterioration of
environment. Fifth semester deals with the environmental problems, the laws and policies in vogue
to protect the environment and provide an overview of the techniques for the solution of
environmental hazards. The final semester involves practical training in industries or an
organization of repute.
STANDARD OF PASSING / CLASS

EVALUTION SCHEME

A. Theory: There will be mid-semester and end-semester examinations

1. All mid-semester exams will be conducted by respective departments. However, they will

course. Both mid-semester and end-semester exams are counted for final grade points.
Grade Description Percentag Division/G Range
Points e of Marks rade
10 Outstanding 90% - 99% First / O Above 9.01 CGPA Class
9 Excellent 80% - 89% First / A 8.01 – 9.00 CGPA < 4 Fail
8 Very Good 70% - 79% First / B 7.01 – 8.00 4 = CGPA < 5 Pass Class
7 Good 60% - 69% First / C 6.01 – 7.00 5 = CGPA < 6 2nd Class
6 Fair 50% - 59% Second /D 5.01 – 6.00 6 = CGPA < 7 1St Class
5 Average 40% - 49% Pass / E 4.01 – 5.00 CGPA ≥ 7 Distinction
4–0 Dropped Below F Below 4.00
40%

Grade Point Average = ∑ (Credit X Grade Point) / Total Credits

AWARD OF CLASS
Marks-sheets of semester I to V of B. Sc. and Semester I to III of M. Sc. will simply indicate result as either
Pass or Fail or ATKT but not the class which will be indicted in the last Semester marksheet.Cumulative
Grade Point Average (CGPA) is computed as:
CGPA = ∑ (Semester credits X GPA) / Total Semester Credits
Where Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is computed as
CGPA = ∑ (Semester credits X GPA) / Total Semester Credits

The sum is taken over from Sem-I to Sem-VI for B. Sc. and Sem-I to Sem-IV for M. Sc.
CRITERION FOR B. Sc. (Hons) DEGREE AWARD

For obtaining B. Sc. (Hons) degree in any subject, a candidate has to earn 144 Credits in all
during the B. Sc. Programme consisting of six semesters.
