Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM

Introduction

Absenteeism takes place when students are already uneasy with

pressures coming in from their daily school activities (1). It is one of the many

factors that affect the students’ performance in academic areas. It is defined to the

students as a deliberate or habitual absence from going to school. Marburger (The

(2) notice that absenteeism tended to be highest at public school.

When a student misses a day of school he/she must have lost the

chance to hear others, interpret and analyzing the lesson or joins the interaction

within the class. This lost is being rooted to the two different courses and varying

factors under these courses. The inquiry might be a family situation or an individual

problem. Then under these courses are the child’s regular truancy. These maybe

finance concerns, disability, psychotic imbalance, poor school climate, family,

health, transportation problems, drug and alcohol and differing community towards

education (30).

The issue of absenteeism can also be viewed to context of academic

problems of students which come in various forms such as difficulty in math

subject, lack of motivation and study habits, strict teachers. Absenteeism in one

angle view point is one of the most common causes of degrading performance of

the students.
2

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

The student body is the greatest is the greatest contributor to the

success or the ground falling of the school. An individual who have habitually made

absences in class may have lost the chance of learning. He or she might have less

chances of getting an aimed position. The school who plays an important role to

child’s motivation has known the impact of absenteeism to a student and to the

school performance itself.

The chronic spread of absenteeism may have roots that affect the

attendance of an individual “A constant doing may lead to a constant result, just

like Domino” (Asia’s Child Data Trend, 2008). Coping up is never easy, especially

when there is a lot to be done. Some teachers are also considerate that slows

down the run of class discussion.

Absenteeism alone when a large part of the school is involved

may not only cause a problem to the school but also to the administration (Williams,

L, 2001). The performance being recorded at the diagnostic test for example will

determine the school performance. And when absences re done, it can pull down

even the highest scores.

That is why the result of absenteeism are to be identified as to the

solutions can be formulated to materialize the aims of the school and the

individuals.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the most common effect of absenteeism to

a student.

Specifically, the study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the teacher and student respondent in terms of:

a. Gender

b. Age

c. Civil Status

2. What are the common cause of absences done by the students in terms of:

a. Self-inquiry

b. Family Problem

3. What are the effects of absenteeism as grouped according to:

a. Students Learning Performance

b. School Performance
5

Hypotheses

Based on the specific problems stated, except problem 3 and problem 4 the

following null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance:

H01 There is no significant relationship between the…

6

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study is limited to the determination of the characteristics…

7

Significance of the Study

The findings of the study would be useful to contribute in the awareness

and understanding of the students…

Definition of Terms

For the purpose of this study, some terms used are operationally defined

for clarity and better understanding. The terms are the following

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter deals on the research design, the research setting, the

subjects of the study, the sampling procedure, the data gathering procedure and

the statistical tools in analyzing the data gathered in the study.

Research Design

This study will use the descriptive research design because it involved

description, analysis, and interpretation of data to be gathered…

Research Setting

The study will be administered to Grade….

Sampling Procedure

To get the sample size of the students’ population, the researcher used the

Slovin’s formula with 0.05 as its margin of error.

𝑁
𝑛=
1 + 𝑁𝑒 2

Where n= sample size

N= total number of population

e= margin of error

therefore, with the given formula, the sample size is computed as follows:

𝑛= = 𝟐𝟑𝟎
