ACUPRESSURE TRAINING COURSE

Synopsis of Lesson I

WHAT IS ACUPRESSURE?
It is stimulation (through pressure) of selected body points for relieving
internal ailments.
VARIOUS FORMS OF ACUPRESSURE
1. Foot/Hand Reflexology
2. Acupressure based on Acupuncture points.
3. Shiatsu of Japan
4. Different forms of Massages

STRUCTURE OF FEET
An engineering wonder of nature – consists of 26 bones, 107 ligaments, 19
muscles, and 7200 nerve endings in each foot. (See illustrations attached)
Small area keeping balance of the body 5-6 ft tall and 50-100 kgs. in
weight.
Feet get constant jolts of walking and running but do not collapse.
Structure of the feet is an engineering wonder no doubt, but equally
wonderful is the fact that the whole body has reiterative relationship with
the feet which means that each organ, gland or any part of the body is
mirrored in the feet, each one has its reflex point/area.
WHAT IS FOOT REFLEXOLOGY?
Foot Reflexology is the study and practice of working the reflexes in the
feet. It is based on the premise that there is a definite relationship between
the reflex point o the feet and the organ, glands and all other parts.
Reflexology stimulates the reflex points in the feet to cause beneficial
reactions to the corresponding part of the body.
WHAT DOES REFLEXOLOGY DO?
• It improves blood supply.
• It promotes unblocking of nerve impulses.
• It helps body to achieve Homeostasis (Equilibrium).
• It relieves tension.
VARIOUS THEORIES TO ELPLAIN HOW REFLEXOLOGY WORKS
1. Blood and Nerve Supply Theory

Sluggish flow causes sedimentation in the feet as blood flows against

gravity. Deposits form crystals. Blood flow is diminished and nerve
impulses are blocked.

2. Nerve Stimulation Theory

Pressure on the response area transmits repair messages to the brain.
3. Lymph Theory
Lymph vessels provide drainage channels into lymph nodes for toxic and
malignant products. Pressure on appropriate area in the feet enhances
the function of lymph vessels to restore chemical balance in the body.
4. Circulation Theory
Pressure on relevant points in the feet improves circulation, thus
increasing supply of nutrients and oxygen and removal of wastes.
5. Electric Potential Theory
Difference in electric potential in various parts of the body constitutes a
corresponding malfunction in another part of the body.
6. Counter Irritation Theory
Human body has the ability to speed up repair when it receives any
insult to its equilibrium.
The above theories and some others are just theories. They all have some
merit in explaining the results but are not full proof technical explanations.
What is of prime importance is that the feet have reflex points
corresponding to the various body parts and working on them is effective,
safe and simple.
