Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Microsoft PowerPoint is set up to support all students in terms of Universal Design for Learning by:
 Visual learners are able to learn and make connections by adding pictures or icons that match the
content of the lesson.
 For students that are visual and audio learners they are able to make connections by adding videos or
voice overs. This gives the students a chance to hear the content instead of just see it.
 Microsoft PowerPoint allows students and teachers to create anything, from a blank slate, to present
content in a way that meets the needs of the audience.
 For students that have a visual impairment, the text can be made as big as the screen will allow it to
be in order to be able to be seen by everyone.
 PowerPoint offers multiple different features to ensure that data/information can be presented in
more than one way at a time to ensure it is understandable by all types of students (graphs, charts,
etc.).

Lesson idea implementation:

To begin the lesson, the teacher will start off using the created PowerPoint to introduce talking about the
different types of weather. The teacher will ask the students what their favorite weather is, for example;
Would you rather it be sunny or do you like when it rains? From this introduction and discussion, we will
begin to observe the weather outside.
The student will take part in observing the weather outside. We will still be using the PowerPoint as a
guide. As a class, while observing the weather, we will make connections to what the weather was like
yesterday and then make predications on what that might mean for the weather tomorrow. From this
activity, we will talk about the characteristics of each type of weather.
As a whole class, for the next week, we will observe the weather every day and make notes of our
observations. We will then create a new PowerPoint (as a class) to document our discoveries. In this

PowerPoint we will use graphs and charts to log our data. By doing this, the students will actively play a role
in the lesson and wrapping up the information learned and observed in relation to weather.

Reflective Practice:
The lesson will impact the students in terms of learning because they will actively be observing the weather in
order to make connections with the content of the standard. The students will also get to work together as a
class to collaborate over their discoveries and the information being learned. The activity within this lesson
will keep the students excited about learning because each day for a week we will get to go outside and look
at the weather. This will be something fun and educational that the students will get to participate in. To
further this lesson and enhance the product, instead of only observing the weather for one week, we could
observe the weather for a whole month. This will extend our findings and the information that will create the
PowerPoint to wrap up the lesson.
