Makeup for Various Face Shapes

Oval face:
If you have an oval face you are already on the right track! Lucky you! According to New York makeup
artist, Jessica Lauren – if you want to make your face appear a little bit shorter and thinner, you can apply
foundation [along your jaw] one shade darker than your natural skin colour. Other than that, you should
stick with using your normal foundation. As for highlighting the assets and best features, try using a
highlighter in the center of your forehead, this is a great way to sharpen it. You can also dab a bit on our
chin, temples, and eye bag too.

Heart face:
If you have a heart face, meaning that your forehead is wider and your chin is more narrow It is most
ideal to draw attention away from the chin and cheekbones. Try using coral makeup for the cheeks. The
incarnation of a sheer wash of colurs for the check is perfect. This will bring a gorgeous rosy glow and
subtle plumping effect to the heart shaped face. One great product to try out is the Tarte Cheek Stain in
glisten. Another way to keep the look subtler is to use nudes. A nude palette will help balance the
proportions of the forehead and chin. It will also help with sharpening planes of the face. I suggest using a
luminous matte shade that will help with a soft glow. Last thing, instead of a harsh liner like liquid, try
something a bit more soft, I really like a gel or pencil linter. The MAC eye pencil is one of my favorite.

Round face:
This is when your forehead and lower face are the same width, and prominent cheeks. It is important to
use makeup to help add definition to the face. I have a round face and one of my favourite thing to do is
create a bronzy look. Bronzer is so important to contour the face. I usually apply bronzer to under my
cheekbones along with a bit of highlighter on the top of my cheekbones. According to Vanessa Eckels,
Senior Makeup Artist at Hourglass Abbot Kinney, she suggests focusing on the arch of the brow to bring
some length to the face, it’s important to have a natural arch of the brow and not overdrawing it.
Square face:
The key to make up for a square face is shade and soften the corners of the face. This includes contouring
the corners of the face with a bronzer or darker foundation. It is best when applied on the side of the jaw,
blending it upwards and the side of the forehead. For the forehead play with the depth but blending
bronzer around the hairline and with a deeper shade to create dimension. Add a bit of colour to the eyes
and cheek. Try blending showdown on the eyes but keeping the shapes softer with no sharp edges.

Different Face Shapes Need Different Kinds Of Makeup

November 13, 2017 by Zinnia

Different girls have different face shapes and sometimes what happens is that we try to copy
makeup looks of celebs and end up looking not just bad but odd too, mostly since you may not
have the same face shape as that of Kate Winslet or may not have the same face shape as that
of Reese Witherspoon.

So while doing your face makeup, it’s important to cast a glance on to the type of face shape
that you have. For that purpose, read the article – How To Know Your Face Shape?
Makeup For Different Face Shapes

Let’s have a deeper insight into the face shapes and correct makeup for face shapes which one
needs to follow

1. Makeup For Oval Shaped Face

The most common face shape is that of the “Oval” shape. I, myself have that shape so am
going to get to the topic right away! Well, Jessica Alba’s face is also sort of Oval Shaped as you
can make out from the picture!

1. The first objective is to make the face look more elongated, so as to minimize the oval
effect of the face. For this, we have to concentrate on our blunt features, if you do have
any. Most people with an oval face but do not have a pointed and sharp nose. So after
applying foundation, what you can do is take some bronzer and apply in between your
thumb and first finger and then apply stretched on to nose from top to bottom ( the sides I
mean). In this way, your nose will get the shadow effect on the sides, and the top will
remain in foundation looking fairer and heightened. This is a makeup trick which every
makeup artist applies for oval shaped faces.
2. Next comes Eyebrows, high arched brows can give a more oval shape. So follow the
natural shape of brow bones and tweeze that way.
3. While doing makeup for eyes or lips, concentrate on any one feature, either eyes or lips
keeping the other simple.
4. Use blush to make the face look elongated. Suck cheeks in and use blush on to contours,
and not onto apples of your cheeks. It’s a damn good technique that makes your face look
sleek and stylish! I can BANK on this one. And one more thing, you can use a little blush
on to the sides on your chin also, not in the absolute front. This enhances this effect!

2. Makeup For Oblong Shaped Faces

Who better than Milla Jovovich ( the Resident Evil Star) to refer when talking about this face
shape? Mainly since the new movie is all set to hit the theaters soon.

Well, I don’t have this face shape, but my friend does, and I’ve seen what she does, well
she is also a Google person and learns tricks from here and there.

Here is a tested version, I am sure you’ll love it.

If your face is oblong or rectangular, then your first and foremost motive will be to show
the face as oval.

Make brows a little arched than the normal run of your brow bones. This will make your
face look a little more oval and round.

1. Use Pinkish (light) shade on to the sucked cheeks ( this will give a plumped up
look) and use a rosy darker shade onto apples.
2. Make your eyelashes look bigger and more dramatic by using double curling
(before and after use of mascara) or you may even experiment with darker
false lashes.
3. Try to keep lips minimum and rosy pink, they look the best and full, to make
your face appear fuller.
4. Minimize sharp edges of the face (like sides of jaws and if your nose is real
sharp, follow alternate technique refer to point 6 with a bronzer sweep.
5. Coming to the nose, like for oval face you follow a side shadowing, here you
need to follow a top shadowing technique, Do not use shadowing on sides of
nose, let it remain covered in foundation. Sweep the top of nose bone with a
bronzer.
3. Makeup For Heart Shaped Faces

The best face to refer to when talking about heart-shaped faces is Reese Witherspoon’s.
Here are a few makeup tips for this face shape. If you have a tapered jawline and a wide
forehead, like most heart-shaped faces, the first focus is to move away the attention from the
wideness of the forehead. You can highlight certain features and turn down others to perfectly
balance this face shape.

1. Use a bronzer or a foundation (darker to the skin tone) along the sides of the temples and the
bottom of the chin. Use a highlighting powder and also on top of the nose. Side shadow the
nose with a bronzer and add some color to the cheeks to accentuate the high cheek bones that
are typical of this face shape.
2. Plump up your lips rather than your eyes. Use a lip plumper or a high-shine gloss and a bold
lip color so that focus remains on lips and not on to tapering jawline.
3. Do not make the eyes too smokey, use lighter shades even if you go for a night out smokey
effect.
4. Contour your cheekbones with a bronzer by tracing the hollows of your cheeks.
5. Use a subtle shade of blush to add color to the apples of your cheeks.
4. Makeup For Diamond Saped Faces

The biggest concern with makeup for different face shapes is that they look very
disproportionate, and this makes it very difficult to achieve a dazzling look! Use makeup to
brighten the center of your face which brings attention to the center of your face. A lighter liquid
foundation or highlighting powder will help you achieve this effect with ease.

1. Apply it to the forehead, bridge of the nose and center of the chin to draw attention to the
center part of the face.
2. Using a bronzing powder or slightly darker foundation, contour the peak of the forehead,
the tip of the chin and underside of the cheekbones for minimizing the width and giving the
face a more proportionate look.
5. Makeup For Round Shaped Faces
Round face has equal length and width. So when it comes to makeup, you will have to create
the illusion of length. Contouring is very important for this face shape.

1. A bronzer can work as a contour when applied to the temples and beneath the jaw line.
Doing so will create the illusion of an oval face. Also, highlight the forehead, area under
the eyes and the chin to draw attention to the center of your face.
2. A blush can be applied just beneath the cheekbones to give them definition, or apply it
directly to the apples of the cheeks to accentuate their perfect shape. Do apply the blush
in upward strokes to give a slimming effect.
A little care needs to be taken regarding the colors as bright colors only accentuate the
roundness of the face.

When you’re choosing makeup, you need to know 2 important things about your skin. The first
is the overtone – your visible skin color, and how light or dark that color is. The second is the
undertones, which is a more subtle coolness or warmth that’s underneath your overtone. Once
you determine your skin overtone and undertones, you can choose foundation, highlighter,
blush, eyeshadow, and lipstick that will complement your skin.
1. Determining Your Overtone and Undertones

Look at your skin in natural lighting to determine your overtone. The overtone of your skin
refers to the initial color you see and how dark or light that color is. Go somewhere with natural
lighting and then look closely at your skin to determine your overtone accurately.
 If your skin is an ivory or cream color, it’s likely considered light.
 You probably have medium skin if your overtone is closer to a caramel or tan color.
 If your skin is a chocolate or mocha brown color, your skin is probably dark.
Use a piece of white paper to determine your undertones. Stand in front of a mirror and hold
up a piece of white paper next to your face. Then compare your skin color to the white of the
paper.[1]
 If your skin looks more yellow than

 the paper, you likely have warm undertones.
 If your skin looks pinker than the paper, you probably have cool undertones.
 If your skin looks peachy, or neither yellow nor pink, then you likely have neutral undertones.

Look at your veins to clarify your undertones. If the white paper test doesn’t quite give you
an answer, take a look at the veins in your wrists. Stand near a window or outside and hold your
hands palm up. Look closely at the veins in your wrists.[2]

 If your veins look blue or purple, you probably have cool undertones.
 If your veins look green, you likely have warm undertones.
 If you have some bluish veins and some greenish ones, you probably have neutral undertones.

2. Choosing Foundation

Look for foundations that match your overtone and

undertones. Most foundations will say right on the bottle
which overtone they’re meant for. You can also tell which
undertones the foundations are meant for by the names
of the colors. Pick a few colors that you think might
work.[3]

Test the foundation on your jawline. It’s important to test

the foundation on you face, instead of your wrist or neck,
because that’s where it will be applied. However, it’s also
important that you pick a foundation that’s not too far from
your neck color, as you want the foundation to provide a
seamless transition from your face to your neck. By applying
the foundation to your jawline, you’ll be able to make sure it
matches your face, and also see how it compares to your
neck.[4]
 Most makeup stores should have samples you can try. If not,
ask an employee if it's possible for you to test foundation.
Examine the foundation under different lighting sources. To
make sure that your foundation is a true match, you should see
how it looks under different lighting. The store you're in will likely
have fluorescent lighting. You can also move toward a window (if
possible) to see how it looks in natural light.[5]

Select the foundation that fully blends into your skin. If your
foundation is a match, it will basically disappear when you put it
on. In other words, your skin will look airbrushed – more even –
but won’t change color.[6]

Create a custom color if you can’t find 1 color that works. Depending on your overtone and
undertones, you might not be able to find a single foundation that works for you. In that case,
you can either mix 2 colors of foundation together to create a custom shade, or add some
bronzer or blush to 1 color of foundation.[7]
 Getting the exact color of foundation you need with this approach can take a lot of
experimenting, so be patient!
 When in doubt, go with a foundation that’s slightly lighter than your overtone. You can easily
add warmth and color with bronzer to make it a little darker, but it can be challenging to lighten a
foundation that’s slightly too dark.
 You may need to adjust your foundation with the seasons. If you tan in the summer, make sure
to use a slightly darker shade during that time of year.

3. Choosing Blush
Go for a peach if you have fair skin and warm
undertones. Peach is a light, soft color that won’t likely
look too stark against your light skin. Also, the soft orange
in the peach should highlight your natural yellow and
golden undertones.[8]

Opt for plum if you have fair skin and your undertones
are cool. Plum is a great choice for this skin color because
it shouldn’t stand out too harshly against your light skin.
Plum blushes should complement your blue or pink
undertones nicely.[9]

Use a mauve blush for medium skin with warm

undertones. This skin color is often also referred to as
“olive.” Go for a mauve blush to highlight both your warm
overtone and warm undertones if your skin is olive.[10]
Go for plums and pinks if you have medium skin
and cooler undertones. These colors should go well
with your skin’s pink or blue tint. Additionally, pinks and
plums shouldn’t be too stark against your medium skin,
but they also aren’t too light to show up on your skin.[11]

Stick with orange blushes if your skin is dark and

your undertones are warm. If you’ve got a more
chocolate overtone and you undertones are yellowish,
this is the way to go. While oranges would look too
intense on other skin colors, they’ll likely look flattering
on yours.[12]
Try a shimmery berry color if you have dark skin
with cool undertones. Berry-colored blushes should
play off of your bluish, reddish, or pinkish undertones
well. Additionally, this color should complement your
darker overtone.[13]

Pick a blush based on your overtone alone if

your undertones are neutral. Those with neutral
undertones can typically wear both blushes that are
warmer, such as peach, and cooler, such as berry.
If you have neutral undertones, just go with a blush
color that’s more vibrant if you have darker skin and
a little softer if you have lighter skin.
 Try oranges or berries if you have dark skin,
mauves or pinks if you have medium skin, and
plums or peaches if you have light skin.

Choosing Highlighter
1.
1
Use a highlighter with a white sheen on fair skin. Highlighters that have an icy-white,
champagne, or ivory sheen look great on fair skin. They’ll make your skin look bright without
washing you out. If you’re worried about looking too pale, apply a light pink blush to your cheeks
first and then swipe your highlighter over it.[14]
2.
2
Choose a peach highlighter for medium skin with cool undertones. The peach in the
highlighter will complement the cool undertones in your skin. It will also give your medium skin a
warm, rosy glow.[15]
3.
3
Use a gold highlighter on medium skin with warm undertones. Medium skin with warm
undertones naturally lends itself to tanning in the summer. Using a gold-colored highlighter on
warm, medium skin will create a similar look.[16]
4.
4
Use rose-gold or bronze highlighter on dark skin. Make sure your highlighter has a lot of
pigment – you don’t want to use a highlighter that’s too light. Stay away from any opalescent
shades: instead of making your skin look dewy, it can make it look gray.[17]

Part 5
Choosing Eye Shadow
1.
1
Wear softer colors if you have light skin. Soft colors such as pinks, beiges, or golds can give
your eyes a pop of color without appearing too intense against your light skin. Try using these
as your primary shadow, and then apply a conservative amount of a similar shimmery shade on
the center of your lids and near your tear ducts to take your look up a notch.[18]

 Avoid bold eye shadow colors.

 If you have warm undertones, pinks and beiges will look great.
 Golds and tans look great if you have cool undertones.
2.
2
Use caramel and honey shades for a natural look on medium skin. These dewy, warm
shades will complement your overtone without making your makeup look too overwhelming. But
if you have medium skin you can also try bolder, brighter colors and pastels.[19]

 Caramel is best for medium skin with warm undertones.

 Honey looks great on medium skin with cool undertones.
3.
3
Use burnt metallic or bright berry colors if you have dark skin. Your dark skin will
complement pretty much any bold, deep color you can get your hands on! Burnt metallics like
copper or bronze will look great on your eyes. So will bright berry colors like plum and dark
blue.[20]

 A burnt metallic like copper or bronze will look great on dark overtones with warm undertones.
 Bright berries like raspberry or grape will highlight dark overtones with cool undertones.
Part 6
Choosing Lipstick
1.
1
Choose pink lipsticks for very fair skin. For a regular daytime look, soft pink lipsticks or clear
lip glosses may look best on light skin. Go for a brighter pink or even a red lipstick for a bold
look on a night out.
2.
2
Use red lipstick if you have fair skin with cool undertones. Dark red lipsticks tend to have
cooler undertones themselves, so they’ll complement your skin. They’ll also make the rest of
your face look very bright.[21]
3.
3
Wear orange hues if you have fair skin with warm undertones. The orange in your lipstick
will complement the warmth in your skin without overwhelming your fair coloring. Orange-hued
shades will also brighten your skin.[22]
4.
4
Choose from a variety of nudes, pinks, and reds for medium skin. If you have medium skin,
there are likely a lot of different shades that will be flattering. If going for a more daytime look,
focus on natural pinks and mauve-browns that make your lips look like a slightly brighter version
of themselves.[23] If you’re going for a nighttime look, opt for vibrant pinkish red lipsticks. [24]

 Mauves look best if you have warm undertones. Browns look better if you have cool undertones.
5.
5
Choose purples and berries for dark skin. Your dark skin will be beautifully complemented by
darker lipstick shades, especially purples or berries. Dark, dark reds will also look great on your
lips.[25]

 The darkest reds look best if you have warm undertones.

 Berries and purples will complement cool undertones.
