MODULE 1 – FOLK ARTS AND DESIGNS OF LUZON

LESSON 1.1 – INTRODUCTION TO THE ARTS OF THE PHILIPPINES

A. MOTIVATION/PRE-ACTIVITY - TRACING ONE’S ROOTS (ART HISTORY)

Choose randomly from the class and ask each student what province his parents are from and where he grew
up or stayed the longest. Name the province(s), the language/dialect he/she speaks, the food and fruits from
that place, traditions celebrated, songs, crafts from that province. Allow them to stand at the center in front of
the class.

B. ACTIVITY & ANALYSIS

C. ABSTRACTION
Check their answers and give them the chance to analyze their work. Post the following lecture on the board.

ELEMENTS/PRINCIPLES/PROCESSES OF ARTS
1. Geometric lines - different straight or curved lines
2. Geometric shapes – squares, triangles, squares, rectangles, ovals, hexagons
3. Repeated design – one pattern or motif or color repeated over a space
4. Alternating designs – two or more patterns, motif or color alternated
5. Graduated designs - a motif or pattern that is repeated but in graduated size from small to big, or if is color,
from light to dark.
6. Mural making – a big artwork which can be done alone or with a group, usually meant for a wall or wide
space.

D. APPLICATION (give this as a home-activity)


Make an example of an artwork using repeated designs using any art/coloring materials on a short bondpaper.
Format and rubrics below. Let them know that all of their artworks shall be compiled for their portfolio.

Summarize the lesson by giving them complete lecture. Allow them to take down notes.
