Overview of EEE Curriculum
A 4-year Direct Honours degree programme whose primary objective
is to provide professional training in electrical, electronic and
information sciences and engineering. The curriculum is designed to
achieve integration of theory with engineering practice and provides a
judicious balance between breadth and depth.

The first year curriculum covers fundamentals in the physical sciences

such as Physics, Chemistry, and Materials Science, plus Mathematics
and Computing, to provide a strong foundation for the latter years of
studies. It also includes a communication-related module and General
Education modules to provide broadening in non-technical areas that
are deemed beneficial for professional careers and lifelong learning.

In the second year, modules on Engineering Mathematics, Circuit

Analysis, Semiconductor Fundamentals, Electronics, Data Structures
and Algorithms, Signals & Systems and AC Circuits & Machines are
introduced to provide a broad background of all areas of EEE. In
addition, students undertake laboratory experiments and a Design &
Innovation Project to provide the necessary grounding in the practical
skills required of engineers.

For Polytechnic Diploma holders who are directly admitted to the

programme, bridging modules on Basic Engineering Mathematics
and Foundation Physics are provided to ease their transition into the
degree programme.

In the third year, basic principles which underpin a broad spectrum

of electrical and electronic engineering areas are taught. These
include core modules on Engineering Electromagnetics, Integrated
Electronics and Microprocessors. In addition, students will select
2 elective modules from a list of more specialized modules in
preparation for more in-depth specialization in their final year.

In the final year, students are given the flexibility to select their
prescribed elective subjects under 3 broad groups, namely Electrical
Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Infocommunication
Engineering. However, students who prefer a more in-depth study
can select the subjects from one of 11 areas of specialization. In
addition to the elective technical subjects, all students are required
to take a compulsory subject in Software Engineering and other
subjects like Human Resource Management, and Engineers &
Society.

In addition to the foundation and specialised courses for

undergraduate education, the School of EEE also offers two research
programmes, the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme
(UROP) and Undergraduate Research Experience on Campus
(URECA), where students can pursue an independent research
project under the supervision of a professor. Students can also be
attached to a renowned overseas university to undertake a research
project under the International Research Attachment scheme.
