7. The Custom Bike Company has set up a weighted scoring matrix for evaluation of
potential projects. Below are five projects under consideration.
a. Using the scoring matrix in the following chart, which project would you rate
highest? Lowest?
b. If the weight for “Strong Sponsor” is changed from 2.0 to 5.0, will the project
selection change? What are the three highest weighted project scores with this new
weight?
c. Why is it important that the weights mirror critical strategic factors?

a. Rate Project 5 the highest and Project 2 the lowest.

b. Yes. The three highest are Projects 3, 5, and 1. Given the new strong sponsor weight, Project 3
becomes the first choice. However, note that Project 5 is still the near equivalent of Project 3 by
the weighting scheme.

c. It is important that the weights mirror critical strategic factors because failure to do so will cause
selection of projects that do not contribute the most to the strategic plan.

1. Going to college is analogous to working in a matrix environment in that

most students take more than one class and must distribute their time
across multiple classes. What problems does this situation create for
you? How does it affect your performance? How could the system be
better managed to make your life less difficult and more productive?
Ans
A college is assumed to be like an organization which has multiple classes and other center of
learning like library, auditorium, laboratories, and recreational centers just like an organization
has multiple functions or departments. There has to be proper coordination and scheduling of
activities such that every function performs their activities which may or may not be dependent
on other functional responsibilities. There is a great need to cohesively manage the scheduling
between the classes and other curricular activity centers in an academic center or college. The
idea is to offer maximum benefits to the students who have to distribute their time between
classes such that they do not stray idle due to long gaps or distances between consecutive class
schedules, nor they do not find the much needed balancing break between the two different
activities. Hence, the biggest problem in most of the colleges is time management. Even though
the time table is set, most of the time the teachers do not follow it strictly and conduct the
classes as per their convenience. Not all the colleges in all the universities allow only one class at
a time to attend for students and hence it becomes very difficult for students to give attention to
each and every class. This surely forces students to devote lesser time to assignments and
midterm exam preparation. The project works, internship, inter college competitions etc.
requires lots of time to excel in it. The matrix environment in

The problem I face the most in college is that of time management. The multiple teachers have
no idea what their counterparts have assigned, what time constraints they have placed on
students, or what the other deadlines that they have given are. This certainly forces me to devote
less time to assignments, or to studying for exams, than would be most effective for me. The
system could be better managed by scheduling classes as they are in the BU Global program,
where students have only one course at a time. Or, if classes were scheduled in blocks, with
staggered start times and end times, and subsequently with staggered midterm and final exams,
students could devote their time more effectively to one subject at a time.

You work for Barbata Electronics. Your R&D people believe they have come up with an
affordable technology that will double the capacity of existing MP3 players and uses audio
format that is superior to MP3. The project is code named KYSO (Knock Your Socks Off). What
kind of project management structure would you recommend they use for the KYSO project?
What information would you like to have to make this recommendation and why?

I will recommend a formal matrix structure or project organization should be considered. In

order to make this recommendation, I will first of all assess how important project management
is to Barbata Electronics. Given the level of competition in the electronics industry Barbata
Electronics is probably heavily…...

1. Calculate the direct cost of labor for a project team member using the following
data:

Hourly rate: $40/hr

Hours needed: 80
Overhead rate: 40%

Direct Cost of Labor: 80 x $40 = $3,200Note: Overhead costs are not included in direct cost of
labor. They are included inTotal Direct costs. So if the question asked what the “Total” direct
costs would bethen the answer would be:$3,200 + ($3,200 x .40) = $4,480

2. Mrs. Tolstoy and her husband, Serge, are planning their dream house. The lot for
the house sits high on a hill with a beautiful view of the Appalachian Mountains. The
plans show the size of the house to be 2,900 square feet. The average price for a lot
and house similar to this one has been $120 per square foot. Fortunately, Serge is a
retired plumber and feels he can save money by installing the plumbing himself.
Mrs. Tolstoy feels she can take care of the interior decorating.
The following average cost information is available from a local bank that makes loans to
local contractors and dispenses progress payments to contractors when specific tasks are
verified as complete.

24% Excavation and framing complete

8% Roof and fireplace complete
3% Wiring roughed in
6% Plumbing roughed in
5% Siding on
17% Windows, insulation, walks, plaster, and garage complete
9% Furnace installed
4% Plumbing fixtures installed
10% Exterior paint, light fixtures installed, finish hardware installed
6% Carpet and trim installed
4% Interior decorating
4% Floors laid and finished

a. What is the estimated cost for the Tolstoys’ house if they use contractors to complete all of the
house?
b. Estimate what the cost of the house would be if the Tolstoys use their talents to do some of the
work themselves.

A. What is the estimated cost for the Tolstoy’s house if they

use contractors to complete all of the house?
Estimate Total Cost = 2900*$120 = $348,000Estimated
total cost for the house is $348,000 (2,900 sq. ft. x $120
per foot).
Estimated total cost for the house is $348,000 (2,900 sq. ft.
x $120 per foot).
B. Estimate what the cost of the house would be if the
Tolstoys use their talents to do some of the work
themselves.
So Estimate cost of House = 120*2900*86% =
$299,280Estimated savings of Serge’s plumbing work and
Mrs. Tolstoy’s interior decorating:Plumbing roughed

,000=$13,920Interior
decorating4%x$348,000=$13,920Total saving=$48,720

Estimated savings of Serge’s plumbing work and Mrs. Tolstoy’s interior decorating:

Plumbing roughed in 6% x $348,000 = $20,880

Plumbing fixtures installed 4% x $348,000 = $13,920

Interior decorating 4% x $348,000 = $13,920

Total saving = $48,720

Estimated total cost for the completed house using their talents is $299,280 ($348,000 - $48,720).

Q3. Exercise Figure 5.1 is a project WBS with cost apportioned by percentages. If the total
project cost is estimated to be $600,000, what are the estimated costs for the following
deliverables?

a. Design
b. Programming
c. In-house testing

What weaknesses are inherent in this estimating approach?

Ans

($600,000 x 40%= $240,000) b. Programming? ($600,000 x 20%= $120,000) c. In-house testing?

($600,000 x 40% = $240,000)

b.If total cost estimate is off, all other costs will be off.
c.Project must be very similar to past projects for subdeliverables to be useful.
