CORRUGATED FIBER BOARD

• What is corrugated fiber board ?

A corrugate fiber board is a composite structure
made up of at least one corrugated layer & at least
one flat layer.
CORRUGATED FIBER BOARD
• The corrugated layer ( “fluted“) layers are
generally called “fluting & are made from
paper called “fluting medium”

FUNCTIONS

Ordinary shipping containers require printing and

labels to identify the contents, provide legal and
regulatory information, and bar codes for routing.

Boxes that are used for marketing, merchandising, and

point-of-sale often have high graphics to help
communicate the contents

Some boxes are designed for display of

contents on the shelf. Others are
designed to help dispense the contents
CLASSIFICATION OF BOARD
• ACCORDING TO ITS CONSTRUCTION,
CORRUGATED BOARD IS CLASIFIED INTO
TYPES OF CORRUGATIONS
➢CORRUGATED BOARD IS FURTHER DEFINED
BY THE TYPE OF CORRUGATIONS OR FLUTING,
THAT IS THEIR HEIGHT & THE NUMBER OF
FLUTES PER UNIT LENGTH
VARIOUS TYPES OF FLUTE
FLUTE PROFILE
MERITS OF FLUTES
✓ “ A” FLUTE MAKES CONTAINERS WITH
BETTER POTENTIAL TOP TO BOTTOM
COMPRESSION STRENGTH THAN “C” OR “B”
FLUTES,
✓ BUT THE THINER “B” FLUTE MAKES BOARD
WITH BETTER FLAT CRUSH THAN EITHER “A”
OR ‘C”
✓ “A” AND “C” FLUTES ARE USED WHERE TOP
TO BOTTOM STACKING STRENGTH &
CONTENTS CUSHIONING IS REQUIRED
MERITS OF FLUTES
✓ “B” FLUTE ARE USED WHERE CONTAINMENT
AND SPACE UTILISATION ARE OF MORE
IMPORTANCE THAN STACKING STRENGTH
✓ THE “ E” FLUTE IS MAINLY USED IN THE
MANUFACTURE OF HEAVY DUTY FOLDING
CARTONS & DISPLAY BOARD
✓ “ E” FLUTE HAS HIGHEST CRUSH RESISTANCE ,
BUT THE LOWEST SHOCK ABSORBING
PROPERTIES
FLUTE CONFIGURATIONS

A 4.70 110 1.54

B 2.46 154 1.33

C 3.61 129 1.45

E 1.14 295 1.26

FLUTING MEDIUM
➢ IN CORRUGATED BOARD,THE HIGHER CALIPER
WHICH GIVES THE HIGH RIGIDITY AND
STIFNESS IS ACHIEVED BY SEPARATING THE
LINERS NOT BY A SOLID FILLER LAYER BUT BY
A CORRUGATED ONE , THUS REDUCING THE
WEIGHT & THE COST
➢THE ROLE OF FLUTING AS A SPACER IN
CORRUGATED BOARD IS IMPORTANT FOR ITS
CONTRIBUTION TO FLAT CRUSH -RESISTANCE,
EDGE COMPRESSION AND BULGE RESISTANCE

STYLES OF BOXES

• ONE OF THE MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS TO

FIBERBOARD’S VERSATILITY IS THE EASE WITH
WHICH THE FLAT SHEETS OF CORRUGATED
BOARD CAN BE CUT AND FORMED INTO AN
IMMENSE RANGE OF PACKAGE STYLES
BOX STYLES
1) Slotted Boxes
2) Telescope Boxes
3) Folders Boxes
4) Rigid Boxes (Bliss Boxes)
5) Self-Erecting Boxes
6) Interior Forms
REGULAR SLOTTED CONTAINER

This is a highly
RSC efficient design for
many applications.
There is very little
0201 manufacturing waste.
The RSC can be used
for most products
and is the most
common box style
HALF SLOTTED CONTAINER

Slotted box styles are generally made

HSC from one piece of corrugated or solid
fiberboard.
The blank is scored and slotted to
permit folding.
0200
The box manufacturer forms a joint
at the point where one side panel
and one end panel are brought
together. Boxes are then shipped flat
to the user
OVERLAP SLOTTED CONTAINER (OSC)

The box is easily closed,

usually with staples driven
through the overlap area.
This style is used when the
length of the box is
considerably greater than
the width, resulting in a long
OSC 0202 gap between the inner flaps.
The sealed overlap helps to
keep the outer flaps from
pulling apart.
FULL OVERLAP SLOTTED CONTAINER
(FOLSC)
All flaps have the same
length (the width of the
box). When closed, the outer
flaps come within one inch
FOLSC of complete overlap.
The style is especially
0203 resistant to rough handling.
Stacked on its bottom panel,
the overlapping flaps provide
added cushioning.
Stacked on its side, the extra
thickness provides added
stacking strength
CENTER SPECIAL SLOTTED CONTAINER
(CSSC)
Inner and outer
CSSC flaps are cut to
different lengths.
Both pairs of flaps
meet at the center
0204 of the box.
The style is
especially strong
because both the
The Inner flaps, with no gap, provide a level base
for the product. A variation of this box is the Side top and bottom
Special Slotted Container, or SSS. All pairs of flaps have double the

corrugated board
CENTER SPECIAL FULL OVERLAP
SLOTTED CONTAINER (SFF)

Inner and outer flaps are cut to

SSF different lengths. When closed,
the inner flaps meet at the
center of the box, and outer
flaps fully overlap. With three
0206 full layers of combined board
over the entire top and bottom,
this style provides extra
cushioning when stacked on its
bottom, or extra stacking
strength when stacked on its side

end panels.

Interlocking Double Cover Container (IC)The style

offers the same ease of packing provided by the
double-cover box, with the assurance that the
covers will not separate from the body.
This feature is advantageous for moving large or
heavy products such as washers, dryers,

refrigerators, water heaters, vending machines
and some hazardous materials
INTERIOR FORMS
• Liners, tubes, pads, build-ups, dividers,
partitions and other inner packing pieces can
be made in an infinite variety of ways to
separate or cushion products, to strengthen
the box or to prevent product movement by
filling voids.
• They may be simple rectangles, or scored,
slotted, scored and slotted, or die-cut shapes.
