1. Simultaneous Interpreting
In simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter must translate the sentence into the target
language while simultaneously listening to and comprehending the next sentence
2. Consecutive Interpreting
During consecutive interpreting the speaker stops every 1–5 minutes (usually at the end of
every “paragraph” or complete thought), and the interpreter then steps in to render what was
said into the target language.
3. Escort/Travel Interpreting
Escort/travel interpreters can behave almost as an assistant, helping clients to navigate while
they are traveling around on (business) trips. These interpreters may accompany clients to a
meeting or to a handful of meetings.
4. Whisper Interpreting
Whisper interpreting is similar to simultaneous interpreting but the interpreter does not use a
headset or microphone, rather the interpreter sits next to the person (or group of people) who
require interpreting and whispers or speaks softly while interpreting in the target language. This
form of interpreting is much harder on the interpreter’s voice.
5. Scheduled Telephone Interpreting (OPI or Over-the-Phone Interpretation)
Scheduled telephone interpreting (also called OPI or Over-the-Phone Interpretation) can be
either simultaneous or consecutive. This form of interpreting is performed during an
established appointment where the interpreter does not see both parties in person, but
executes the interpreting via telephone.
6. On-Demand Phone Interpreting
On-Demand Phone Interpreting is for individuals or organizations that need to communicate
across language barriers immediately. This form of interpreting is performed when a party calls
a service, selects the required language pair and is connected to an interpreter. The interpreter
then comes on the line and interprets the conversation.
1. In your opinion, what criteria is the most important in translation? Choose
only one main point and explain it briefly (100 words), with examples
from lessons/your own experience.
There are many criteria for a good translation, but I personally think that naturalness is
the most crucial one. Naturalness is a real challenge for both amateur and professional
translators. Culture, language norms and the readers’ feedback are the evident features
of the naturalness. It has been said that a good translation does not sound like a
translation. If the source language includes historical events that occur in cultural
context, the target language have to mention historical references in the text. Those are
not altered in normal translation practice. People generally enjoy hearing a translation
that does not sound unnatural like so many translations they have heard before.
For example:
SL: Children share what they really think of the world, with funny and moving results,
according to BBC News.
When translating this sentence into Vietnamese, it’s better to bring the term “according
to” to the beginning of the sentence because it sounds more natural.
TL: Theo BBC News, trẻ em chia sẻ những gì mà chúng nghĩ về thế giới bằng những kết
quả hài hước và cảm động.

- Learn a foreign language just by reading
- Read a foreign language from day one
- Immediate availability of manually added meaning
- Speeds up vocabulary expansion immensely
For example:
Example 1: For foreign travelers who are not fluent in another languages, especially the
languages of countries they want to visit, it is easier for them to learn just only basic
vocabulary and basic grammar in order to communicate in other countries, that’s when
word-for-word and literal translation are so useful. They can easily understand some signs
appear on the road, menu in restaurant or instructions at subway station thanks to these
two types of translation.
Example 2: For kids who want to learn English, there is an effective way is that we replace
some familiar words or phrases so that they can guess the actual meaning of them by using
word-for-word and literal transition, which results in the expansion of vocabulary
For example:
The knowledge of the source language grammar, vocabulary knowledge, and a good
understanding of the original text.
The ability of the translator to render the text required translation (the source language
text) into the target language.
The translation should capture the style or manner of the original text, and deliver the
message of such text.
FIELD OF TRANSLATION
Legal translations Public sector
CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD TRANSLATOR
1. Compliant
A good translator should follow the procedures required by client; know how to provide the
details and comply with the client's as well as the agency's rules. A professional translator
must have knowledge of the general laws and the legalities implemented and observed in
different countries, so that the translations of documents comply with the target countries
rules and regulations and its laws.
2. Committed to each project
Professional translation requires commitment from the translator. The translator should be
flexible, responsive, duty-bound, dedicated and a professional through and through. To
become a good and effective translator, you should ensure that each and every translation
project you handle is treated with respect and will be consistently of the highest quality. On-
time delivery is also a requirement.
Consider the subject matter and target audience. Legal, medical and technical translations
usually require a serious, formal tone and in some cases, use of the passive voice. In contrast,
marketing content allows more freedom in diction and tone, including the use of an active voice
to feel natural.
