1. A material subjected to a simple tension test shows an elastic limit of 200 MPa. Calculate factor of
safety if the principle stresses set up in a complex two dimensional stress system are limiting to
100 MPa tensile and 25 MPa compressive. Base your answer on the following theories:
(a) maximum shear stress; (b) maximum shear strain energy. [Ans: (a) 1.6; (b) 1.75]
2. A tube has a mean diameter of 100 mm and a thickness of 3 mm. Calculate the torque which can be
transmitted by the tube with factor of safety = 2.25, elastic limit in tension = 200 MPa and  = 0.3,
if the criterion of failure is: (a) maximum shear stress; (b) maximum strain energy (c) maximum
shear strain energy. [Ans: (a) 2.035 kNm; (b) 2.524 kNm; (c) 2.35 kNm]
3. A mild steel shell of 50 mm diameter is subjected to a bending moment of 1.9 kNm. If the yield
point of the steel in simple tension is 200 MPa, find the maximum torque that can also be applied
according to the following theories of yielding: (a) maximum shear stress; (b) maximum shear
strain energy. [Ans: (a) 1.55 kNm; (b) 1.79 kNm]
4. A metal bar is being compressed along the x1 axis between two rigid walls such that  3  0 and
 2  0 . This process causes an axial stress  1 and no shear stresses. Determine the apparent yield
value of  1 if the material in a conventional compression test exhibits a yield strength  L and
Poisson’s ratio . Assume that the material is governed by the von Mises yield condition. Find an
alternative expression if the maximum strain energy theory is postulated.

5. If the principal stresses at a point in an elastic material are 2 tensile and ½ compressive,
calculate the value of  at failure according to the following theories: (a) maximum principal stress;
(b) maximum shear stress; (c) maximum strain energy; (d) maximum shear strain energy.
The elastic limit in simple tension is 200 MPa and Poisson’s ratio = 0.3.

6. The load on a bolt consists of an axial pull of 10 kN together with a transverse shear force of 5 kN.
Estimate the diameter of bolt required according to the following theories: (a) maximum principal
stress; (b) maximum shear stress; (c) maximum strain energy; (d) maximum shear strain energy.
The elastic limit in tension is 270 MPa, and a factor of safety of is 3. Poisson’s ratio = 0.3.

7. A shaft subjected to pure torsion yields at a torque of 1.2 kNm. A similar shaft is subjected to a
torque of 720 Nm and a bending moment M. Determine the maximum allowable value of M
according to (a) maximum shear stress theory; (b) maximum shear strain energy theory.

8. The state of plane stress shown in Figure occurs in a component made 0


of steel with  L  325 MPa. Using (a) the maximum shearing stress

(iii)  0  280 MPa. If yield does not occur, determine the 0
corresponding factor of safety.
