ABSTRACT
According to ACI 318-02, 7 deep beams are defined as members loaded on one face
and supported on the opposite face, so that compression struts can develop between the loads
and the supports. Moreover, deep beams have either: ln/h ≤ 4.0; or a/h ≤ 2.0, where ln is the
clear span of the deep beam, h is the overall depth, and a is the shear span length. Reinforced
concrete (RC) deep beams are used as load distributing structural elements such as transfer
girders, pile caps, foundation walls, water tanks and tall buildings etc. Due to the small value
of span-depth ratio, the strength of deep beams is usually controlled by shear rather than
flexural strength, if normal amounts of longitudinal reinforcement are used. In addition, the
deep beams’ shear strength is significantly greater than that of regular RC beams (high span
to depth ratio; ln/h>4), because of the special capacity of deep beams in redistributing
internal forces before failure. Their stress developing mechanisms of force transfer are quite
different from those of regular beams. As per code provisions given by Bureau of Indian
Standards a beam shall be considered as deep beam when the ratio of effective span to overall
depth ratio is less than 2.0 for simply supported beams.
In this thesis we intend to study the effect of web reinforcement on the shear capacity
of the deep beams by doing a parametric study. The beams will be cast by varying the span
depth ratios and by using various percentages of main reinforcement and web reinforcement.
Further the workability and strength parameters of the concrete and beams will be tested and
compared as per the suitable codal provisions.
In the end the thesis intends to find the effect of web reinforcement on shear
parameter and also to find optimum percentage of shear reinforcement. Also to find the
suitability of this as a structural member and best reinforcement material.
Key words- RC Deep Beam, ACI-American Concrete Institute, Span depth ratio, Shear
Reinforcement, Web reinforcement.
