Individual Subject Plan

Name: Mary Murray

Subject/Module: PCC reaching out to Local Community

Duration: Ongoing throughout the year.

Aims

1 To learn about the caring work undertaken in the local community.

2 To develop an awareness of the importance of belonging to a parish or community.

Objectives

To learn about

1 St Vincent de Paul Youth Development Project-Youth for Justice.

2 The "Solas" mental health Community Group.

3 The Irish Wheel Chair Association.

4 Donegal Centre for Independent Living.

Content of Course

1 Visiting the local nursing home over a period of eight weeks.

2 Spending a day at Ards Friary with the "Solas" Mental Health team. with a morning
reflection, a walk and a workshop.

3 Fundraising for two charities the Irish Wheelchair Association and Sightsavers. This will
involve class members getting sponsorship from the community.The students will organise a
fundraiser for their chosen charity at our Christmas fare. We also plan a "Spin Cycle" in the
village later on in the year in aid of Sightsavers.

4 Learning about the Donegal Centre for Independent Living.


Teaching and Learning Strategies

1 Learning to communicate with the elderly, listening to, talking with and respecting their
stories, experiences and values.

Entertaining them with dancing, music, songs and games.

2 Getting to know the work and the voluntary work of the Irish Wheelchair Association by
inviting one of their speakers into the classroom.

3 Learning about living with disability, including attitudes and language around disability.
Planning to invite a speaker from the Donegal Centre for Independent Living.

Assessment

The students will discuss and report about each of the above activities. They will also write
about their experiences and share with the other students.

They will also create role play situations.

Secondary Schools

Social Action heroes/role models like Ozanam Frederick, Peter Mc Verry, Brother Kevin
(Capuchin's) and others.

Links with other Subjects

Integrating with History/Geography by visiting the Grianan of Aileach, and the Beltony Stone
Circle and appreciating the creativity, values and contribution of the generations before us.
Also we will visit Dunfanaghy Workhouse in our study of attitudes to modern migration into
Europe while comparing these to attitudes to emigration from Ireland during the Famine.

Linking with music by voicing our concern through song . We plan to invite a local singer into
school to lead us in expressing feelings through music and song.
Listing keywords in English on the different topics.
