PART A (ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS)

QUESTION 1 – INFRASTRUCTURE

(a) Figure Q1 shows a mixed residential development consisting of 3-storey bungalows,

semi-detached houses and terrace houses at a site in Seberang Perai, Penang. A
public sewer system was found in the vicinity of the project site along Jalan Bukit
Noning 2. As a competent design engineer, you are tasked with the following works:
(i) Construct the drawing of a practical sewerage network for the said development
that would ultimately discharge into the public sewer system. This construction
should include pipes, manholes and sewage flow direction arrows complemented
with appropriate legend up to the public sewer manhole. You may use the figure
for your sketches and include it into your answer script. [CO1-PO2; C5-C6]
(6 marks)

(ii) Design the sewerage system based on SPAN guidelines. This design should
include specifications on prescribed pipes (material, size, length and gradient) and
manholes (ref., surface level, invert level and depth). You may provide these
specifications on the same figure as in part (i). Evidence of design workability
must be provided through design calculations and/or referential quotes of
prevailing guidelines. [CO2-PO3; C5-C6]
(15 marks)

(iii) The following scenario has developed at the site. The outgoing sewer pipe could
not be connected hydraulically to the public sewer system because its depth is
lower than that of the latter. Propose and justify a practical solution to this problem
with minimal changes to the status quo. [CO1-PO2; C5-C6]
(4 marks)

(b) In order to facilitate project planning, you are further tasked with following works for the
said project:
(i) Generate take-off quantity for the pipes alone including excavation and bedding.
[CO6-PO12; C5-C6]
(5 marks)

(ii) Generate cost estimation for the pipes alone including excavation and bedding.
[CO6-PO12; C5-C6]
(5 marks)

QUESTION 2 – STRUCTURE

(a) Figure Q2-1, Q2-2, Q2-3 and Q2-4 show a development involving a 2-storey bungalow
at a site in Sepang, Selangor. The thickened outlines indicate the proposed structural
framework The following design parameter has been adopted: 50 years for design life;
R60 for fire resistance; XC1 for exposure class; 25 kN/m³ for unit weight of reinforced
concrete; fyk=460 N/mm2; fyv=250 N/mm2; fck=25 N/mm2; 1.0 kN/m² as slab finishes
intensity; 2.88 kN/m² for brickwall (plastered on both sides) intensity; 1.5 kN/m² for roof
tiles, purlins, trusses, ceilings and/or services intensity; rectangular section for slab
panel, beam, column stump and footing elements; 1.5 m for stump length; 200 kN/m²
for soil bearing capacity. As a competent design engineer who is well versed in the
reinforced concrete design using the Eurocodes, you are tasked with the following
works:
(i) Analyse the slab panel, beam, column stump and underlying footing elements
marked S1, B1, C1 and F1 respectively on the ground floor using full design
permanent (dead) and variable (live) loads. Adopt the area method technique to
estimate pertinent reactions from other pre-sized elements on this and other
floors. [CO1-PO2; C5-C6]
(10 marks)

(ii) Design and generate technical detailing or drawing for the slab panel, beam,
column stump and underlying footing elements marked S1, B1, C1 and F1
respectively on the ground floor which comply with the requirements for durability,
fire, bond, bending moment, shear force, deflection and cracking. [CO2-PO3; C5-
C6]
(15 marks)

(b) In order to facilitate project planning, you are further tasked with following works for the
said project:
(i) Generate distinct activities, and their respective order and duration for the ground
floor beam and slab works alone. [CO6-PO12; C5-C6]
(4 marks)

(ii) Develop a network diagram for the ground floor beam and slab works alone using
the Critical Path Method. [CO6-PO12; C5-C6]
(6 marks)

PART B (ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS)

QUESTION 3 – ETHICS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(a) A residential project consisting of 40 units of single-storey terrace houses and 70 units
of double-storey terrace houses were built over filled ground platform of up to 20m
thick overlying the undulating meta-sedimentary formation. The foundation system
consisted of driven piles of consistent penetration length. Following construction, the
structures had indicated significant platform settlement and structural cracking.
Forensic investigations had shown that the fill contained boulders and is not properly
compacted to normal engineering standard by the contractor. Furthermore, the pile is
too short to mobilize adequate soil resistance. As a Professional Engineer for the said
project, assess your liabilities to what had befallen on the project. [CO4-PO6; C5-C6]
(10 marks)

(b) Evaluate your ethics and responsibilities as a Professional Engineer with regards to
what you should have carried out in the first place in your capacity as a Professional
Engineer for the said project. [CO4-PO6; C5-C6]
(10 marks)

(c) Propose specific, practical and comprehensive solution(s) to these problems in the
aftermath of the incidence, and the required monitoring program in order to gauge the
performance of such remediation efforts. [CO4-PO6; C5-C6]
(10 marks)
