How does the structure contribute to the overall message of the text?

How does the contrast of imagery contribute to the overall meaning of the
text?
- Contrasting the senses of animal and human → Shows that they are barely surviving
- Camels are willing to do anything to survive (eating bush and drinking brackish
water) Which are the things that humans are not willing to do
- Camels are known to be tough animals, storing loads of water → really shows that
they’re starving as no water is left

Draft:

The extract that I am going to analyze is from the book by Wilfred Thesiger called
Arabian Sands. The extract is about Wilfred Thesiger and his travel companions traveling
across the Arabian desert. The extract talks about Wilfred Thesiger recalling an experience of
dreadful days in the Arabian desert where he had to endure and overcome countless problems
and challenges.

The main message of this extract this is to show endurance through suffering through
one of the harshest places on earth, being constantly challenged by tough weather conditions
and barely surviving. The message is conveyed through the use of descriptions of the
environment around them and by carving a sense of imagery into readers, using contrasted
imagery between physical conditions of the author and the camels to provide readers with a
visual representation of the situation. As well as recording a series of catastrophic events that
have happened in the 7 days of their journey through the Arabian Desert. In this analysis, we
are going to explore the main message by looking at how the structure of the narrative
contributes to Wilfred’s overall message, and how the contrasting of imagery adds on to the
overall message.

Firstly, we are going to look at the structure of this extract. The structure of the text
starts off by introducing us to the environment and talking about the difficulties they encounter
such as their desperation for water and food. Then, the writer talks about his At first, the writer
informs us about the weather in the Arabian desert. ‘Watch the driving rain soak into the sand.’

Furthermore, we will be looking at the contrast between the humans and the camels
and how it contributes to the overall message of the text. The writer displayed his By
contrasting them, it shows that the Arabic Desert is very difficult for either humans or the
camels to survive in here. Camels are known as very tough animals and they could live in lots
of situations, however, it is still challenging for them to stay alive. The camels were willing to
eat bushes and drink brackish water to try to keep themselves alive, but those are the things
that humans weren’t eager to do, even in such a condition.
