1. General
The unit has been designed to allow the study of the reaction of a compressed air stream through different types of nozzles.
It is possible to utilize the unit in two different circuit configurations: the first allows to study the speed of the jet coming out
from the nozzle, the second allows to study the thrust of the jet itself.
In the first configuration the air jet coming out from the nozzle hits a special impact head mounted on a balance arm.
In the second configuration, the air jet comes out from the nozzle vertically upwards, pushing the balance arm downwards.
In both configuration, the forces generated are measured by a mechanical micrometer fitted with an electric sensor.
2. Composition
Set of nozzles of 2 mm throat diameter
- No. 1 convergent
- No. 4 convergent/divergent with the following outlet area/throat area ratios: 1.2 – 1.4 – 1.6 – 2.0
No.2 pressure gauges, 0 16 bar, for the measurement of the inlet and the chamber pressure
No. 3 mercury thermometers, 150 mm long, for the measurement of the inlet and the chamber temperature
Variable area flowmeter for the measurement of the air flow from 1 to 8.5 g/s (25.000 l/h)
Hollow cantilever, 250 mm long, provided with nozzle adapter
Set of dead weights, 0,5 – 1 – 2 N, for the calibration of the cantilever deviation
Micrometer, 0,01 mm, with electric contact, warning lamp and voltmeter 0 1.5 V for the measurement of the deflection
Set of valves:
- No.1 diverter valve to send the air to the speed measurement circuit
- No. 2 needle valves for the accurate control of the inlet pressure and for the control of pressure and flow in the test
chamber
- No. 1 safety valve calibrated at 10 bar

- determination of the effect of the inlet pressure on the mass flow through a nozzle discharging at a constant return
pressure and comparison of the actual mass flow with the theoretical value
- determination of the return pressure on the mass flow through a nozzle with constant inlet pressure and comparison
of the actual mass flow with the theoretical value.
- Determination of the speed of the jet coming out from a nozzle working at various inlet and return pressures
- Calculation of the nozzle efficiency
- Determination of the jet reaction and of the specific thrust at various inlet and return pressures
