Assignment 2

Talia Waller

June 17, 2019

Introduction

What are some helpful digital tools for both teaching and learning, that provides opportunities for

classroom success? This is often a question that educators ask ourselves constantly throughout our

experience, and the fact is that there are several different types of online tools that can be utilized. Some

of these tools are unique in design. However, other tools may appear as being extremely similar in

purpose and structure, but which one is more effective in the classroom? Kahoot and Quizizz are both

game-based tools that are used for formatively assessing students’ knowledge. There are elements that

make them very similar, but there are also elements that cause them to differ. Overall, Kahoot is a

teaching tool that is most effective in the classroom and can better support teaching strategies.

Web-based tool #1

The first web- based tool that I have identified for observation and comparison is Kahoot. Kahoot

is a free online program that allows educators to create learning games that are fun and engaging for

students. Educators are able to create questions, relating to any topic of choice, that consist of multiple

choice questions, images, videos, and diagrams can also be used to engage students in learning. One

feature that can be extremely helpful for some teachers is the search and share feature. This feature

allows individuals to search public Kahoots, which have been made by others, and share their personal

Kahoots with others! This learning tool is best played in-group settings. For example, teachers are able to

display the lesson on the screen or interactive board, and students are able to actively answer the

questions on their own devices. Based on student performance and data, the teacher will be able to use

the results as a teachable moment. This will allow time for helpful content review. An article by Kathy Dyer

(2019) states that, “You’ll gain a better understanding of the role formative practice plays within your

instruction and about the four foundational practices to use in the classroom.” With that being said, tools

such as Kahoot can be extremely beneficial to teachers’ teaching practices in the classroom and to

students. Also, students will be able to ask questions, so the teacher will be able to clarify any

misconceptions that the students may have.

Web-based Tool #2

The second web-based tool that I identified for observation and comparison is Quizizz. Quizizz is

also a free online tool that can be used by students to practice and review learning content. Teachers are

able to search previously created Quizizz games as well as construct their own. Educators are able to

construct questions that are in multiple-choice format, and they can have up to 4 answer choices. While

implementing this tool in the classroom, teachers will provide students with a class code so they will have

access to the selected content. During the Quizizz session, students will be able to read and answer the

questions independently as well as at their own pace, which is beneficial. Based on my evaluation and

practice using this program, it definitely supports teaching strategies and can be useful in teaching

practices (Baylen, 2019, p.3).

Reasons for Tool Selection

There are several reasons why I decided to include both Quizizz and Kahoot as web-based tools

for comparison. The first reason is that students are so heavily influenced by technology and learning that

is interactive. With that being said, students are more engaged by learning content that is similar to a

web-based game and one that allows them to interactive with their peers. Another reason that I selected

these tools is the ability to formatively assess students’ needs and comprehension of content. For

example, both of these tools would be helpful before an assessment like a quiz. These tools will allow the

teacher to see what the students understand or what needs to be reviewed/explained a little more in

depth before assessment.

Comparison of Content Delivery

Evaluation of Support
Kahoot This tool allows educators to individually create and deliver content questions to

students. After each question, results of student understanding as a whole are

presented. This enables the teacher to review the correct answer (s) and clarify any

misconceptions if needed. This is also a great way to formally assess for re-

teaching content.
Quizizz This tool allows educators to create content for practice/ review using multiple-

choice style questions. The content Quizizz can be selected from existing quizzes or

the teacher can construct their own. Students are able to work individually at their

own pace to complete the questions on the Quizizz, and once they are done, the

teacher can analyze the final data for each question. Based on the data, the teacher

will be able to re-teach and review content or questions that were commonly missed

by students.

Comparison of Ease of Use

Ease of Use
Kahoot This tool requires the user to create a free account. Once access is granted to the
account, the user will have access to thousands of previously created content.

Once on the home page, there is a helpful toolbar across the top of the webpage

that is simple and very easy to navigate. The user is able to discover Kahoots that

are already created, search Kahoots in personal collection, or access reports from

previously played games.

Quizizz This tool requires the user to create a free account. Once the user is on the

homepage, there is a helpful toolbar on the left hand side. User has the option to

find previously created quizzes, view personal quizzes, access reports, create

classes for students to access content, update profile settings, and a tab to edit user

profile.

Comparison of Support

Support during implementation

Kahoot For support during Kahoot instruction, teachers are able to use the help and support

center page for troubleshooting and questions. This option is located when you click

on the information button in the top right hand corner of the webpage.
Quizizz During implementation and instruction of Quizizz, users are able to zendesk. In the

bottom left hand corner of the screen, there is a help bubble that allows you to

directly ask questions and receive feedback.

Reflection

Web-based tools are very valuable to classroom practice because they are essential to bring

learning concepts in the classroom together. We currently live in a digital age where everything around us

is moving and rapidly changing. Both Kahoot and Quizizz are beneficial tools that I have and will continue

to incorporate into my current practice as an educator. These tools are great for assessing students’

knowledge when I want to receive immediate data on content comprehension. This will allow me to hit

target areas for re-teaching content and clarifying student misconceptions. Challenges that I faced for this

assignment was identifying the functions of both of my online tools.
