Event: International Picnic
Date: October 8th
Location: PC Campus
International Picnic Day is an informal food holiday.
Prague College students celebrate International
Picnic Day by bringing traditional food, music, art,
dance, fashion and sharing their cultures with the
rest. Students will be making presentations about
their countries and this special program helps to
better understand the values and culture of the
students you’ll be studying with. It also provides
a great opportunity to raise awareness and sim-
ply make new friends. This event was hugely
successful last year and many lasting friendships
were established at the picnic.

Event: Halloween Party
Date: October 29th
Location: TBA*
Halloween is celebrated annually around the
world on October 31, Halloween is a mostly
secular holiday involving costumes, candy
consumption and frightening stories, so why not
we celebrate it to the fullest extent! Last year it
was the biggest party on the student calendar
and much blood & gore was spilt by all! A special
program and great time is guaranteed! Great
prizes for the best costumes so make sure to
get your monster masks ready! More information
about the event will be posted in mid October.
Get prepared to be tricked and treated!
Event: Recycling Fair
Date: November 19th
Location: PC Campus
Recycling Fair is a fun day event, which brings
together buyers and sellers from the Prague
College Community. Expect to find students
and lecturers selling their items including toys,
games, hardware, books, DVDs, CDs, food,
clothes and much more.
Sellers can register by sending an email to Mary
Tran at ThuHien.T@seznam.cz.
Registration is free of charge!
Bring friends and be sure to find a bargain on

MOVIE CLUB @ PC
Students United presents a brand new
event on grounds of Prague College.
Every Friday after classes at 16.30 a
screening of a film that is related to a
particular event that has happened in
history that week will be presented.
Screenings will happen in room 209.
Pop corn and drinks will be available
for sale at PC Lunchies.
October 1st – Dead Poet’s Society
It’s a first week of classes. Screening of a
movie about education, inspiration and
thinking outside of the box the Dead Poet’s
Society with Robin Williams.
October 8th – The motorcycle Diaries
Guerilla leader Che Guevara and his people
were captured in Bolivia. Screening of The
motorcycle Diaries about Che Guevara and
his life and how it all started.
October 15th – From Hell
In 1888 From Hell letter was sent by Jack
the Ripper. Screening From Hell with
Johnny Depp.
October 22nd – Thirteen Days
In 1962 Cuban Missiles Crisis. In the mem-
ory of JFK we will be screening Thirteen
Days about the missile crisis with Kevin
Costner.
October 29th – Carpenter
It is a Halloween week! A very first Hallow-
een Movie by Carpenter.
November 5th – Sweet November
First week of November. Sweet November,
which is sad but lovely.
November 12th – Borat
in 1993 a national currency of Kazakhstan
was issued. Let’s watch Borat.
Silvia Weinzettelová
“...finding extraordinariness in ordinary things.”
Silvia is a 2nd year Graphic De-
sign student. Coming from Zilina, Slovakia,
she left for Prague to study design after she
decided to turn down offers from several
British universities to start Politics / Interna-
tional Relations programmes.
“I’ve always subconsciously known
that design was something I wanted to do for
a living”, she says. “However, I abandoned
the idea of studying Graphic Design at one
point because I thought I wouldn’t be ac-
cepted to a uni. Thus I settled for the second
best option, which was, at that time, Politics.
Once I found out that Prague College offers
English-taught GD course, I decided to ap-
ply. At that time, I already had offers from
other unis for International Relations, so it
wasn’t risking anything.”
Silvia particularly enjoys typogra-
phy even though it was web design which
pulled her into the world of graphics. “I was
16 when I created my first website. I soon
found out I’d need to teach myself CSS
and HTML, so I eventually experimented
a lot and taught it myself by trial and error.
Nonetheless, I’ve always preferred design
to code, so I rarely build complete web-
sites nowadays. Today’s market is so open
to young people, the possibilities are pretty
much endless. I even happened to design
Facebook landing pages for two Czech
Televisions’ programs and that’s some-
thing I’d never dreamt of.”
Typographic scarf
Apart from other works, she
made a font from socks. What’s the inspi-
ration behind this piece of work? “I always
get the best ideas at most random places.
Since I started the GD programme, I can
say I started to think more conceptually
and notice those little things you normally
don’t think about. Putting on the socks
one morning, I thought to myself - why
not? Why wouldn’t I made an alphabet
from socks? I believe it’s its everydayness
which makes it interesting, sort of finding
extraordinariness in ordinary things. More-
over, it was fun to create something manu-
ally. Before I started college, I used to be
strictly a computer person and hated work-
ing with hands. Then I went through couple
of assignments, and all of a sudden I miss
doodling, cutting, and sewing. That’s why I
enjoyed Typography Skills class a lot - we
had total freedom in terms of what our final
pieces would be, so I ended up modeling
letters out of minced meat or cutting a ty-
pographic scarf out of fleece. Basically, the
college taught me to enjoy the process of
creation which can be very enriching, not
only the joy brought by final product.”

Freelancing opportunities for
students of Prague College
The best thing about online freelancing is that you will never
have to see who you are dealing with face-to-face.
Life of a student may not seem as
easy as it looks. Every one of us has troubles,
and at some point we all start thinking about
getting a job, paying for the rent and of course
buying things that we can’t live without. Now-
adays, it is harder to get a job in the Czech
Republic as never before. This is the first time
when unemployment rate has reached its
psychological barrier of 10% since the fall of
communism in 1989. It is very logical that for
any businessman a student would be the last
person they would want to hire. Of course,
many of us may have skills in certain areas
but we still are young and inexperienced. We
cannot provide a wide portfolio of our work in
order to impress employers.
However, this is not a reason to get
sad and lose your hopes. Today, people use
an alternative way of earning money by do-
ing work they enjoy; it is called “freelancing”.
Freelancers are self-employed people who
do not have any long-term contracts with
employers. In this article I would like to cover
the most famous freelancing website which
allows you to work online with people all over
the World, it is called Freelancer.com
(www.freelancer.com).
The best thing about online free-
lancing is that you will never have to see who
you are dealing with face-to-face. This takes
a lot of tension and stress out. Additionally,
you have an opportunity to work on several
projects at once, therefore you do not need to
worry whether you may make any mistakes
that will cause you to lose your job. Freelanc-
ing is a great opportunity for any student as
there are hundreds of different spheres you
can work at. You also have an opportunity of
making mistakes and learning from it, since all
of the work will be done from home and you
will only get short-term projects. Therefore,
you will not build a strong relationship with
your boss and colleagues.

There are many
projects available, from
$30 to $5,000+ salaries.
You will find a lot of proj-
ects that payout more
than 10 thousand dollars,
but they of course need
more effort, time and even
team-work. Therefore, you may want to
form a group of friends who will help you
to deal with these projects in order to in-
crease your profits. There are thousands of
companies that are looking for outsourc-
ing, companies that may be located any-
where in the World, so you are not limiting
yourself by your living area.
You may think where’s the catch?
Well, the problem is that whether you will
or will not be accepted for any job only de-
pends on yourself. Each employer posts a
project online, when you find a project that
suits you, you usually bid on it (the amount
of money you would like to receive for the
job). However, you will also write a mes-
sage, and it is always better to leave out a
small descriptive message while you bid,
and then send a full letter on the message
board or private messages. This will be
your contact with the employer, and most
of the time you will only have one chance.
Therefore, you must always show your
professionalism and effectiveness of your
work. It is advisable to start on small $30
– $750 projects. Therefore, you will gain
experience and reputation on the website,
many employers do write reviews and you
also have your own 1 – 10 star rating.

Students United
At Prague College there is Stu-
dent Council, we also call it Students Unit-
ed as the main idea of it is to get the stu-
dents together and make something out
of the communication. Students United
arranges different activities for students,
gives opportunity for all of us to express
ourselves and to develop ideas and proj-
ects at Prague College.
Students United is a voluntary
community, or better say a team which ar-
ranges parties, sport events, PC Lunches
and other activities and events in which
you can participate.
To get to student council (Stu-
dents United) you need to become a stu-
dent council member. Anyone can join and
is more than welcome to contribute.
or if you want to get some specific position
in SC (we have 7 of them) you can take part
in the elections which are coming on the
third week of the first semester (semester
1004). SC has its own constitution which
was signed this year in July.
PC Lunchies
PC Lunchies is one of many ac-
tivities organized by Students United. This
activity provides goods and services to stu-
dents with the support of other students.
PC Lunchies works on the regular bases.
PC Lunchies can be found in the lounge
area on the first floor. If you are hungry, PC
Lunchies are here to provide you every-
thing from sweets, chocolate, noodles and
up to hotdogs and toasts. PC Lunchies is
opened daily from 10.00 till 18.00, Friday
from 10.00 till 16.00.

provided by PC Lunchies has not been en-
closed yet, so if you have any ideas how we

Who, When and Why?
Student Council Elections.
It’s time to think about the choices and
the results they bring… Yes, I am talking about
the elections which, we guys are facing in the
nearest future. The problem that some of us will
face, and I would say that it will be the majority
of our comparably small but strongly separated
community, is that we don’t know the person we
are voting for and why we are actually voting? I
have heard a lot of people saying this so let us
explain who and why.
The Student Council (SC) decided to
go more public this year; in order to make itself
more open to students of Prague College as well
as to bring knowledge about the existence of our
community. To show our democracy views we
would like each of the students to vote and to
choose the person they truly know and believe in.
To do this, SC has introduced a new constitution
signed by Doug, where there were mentioned
the rules of the upcoming elections.
UCXXI - Summer 2010 at Prague College
The voting period will happen on the
3rd week of 1st semester (1004). The voting will
be done on paper which will be handed out by
the lecturers. The only thing which you should
worry about is-to put all your thoughts together,
don’t just tick and circle.
Before the voting happens, we will in-
troduce to you the participants of the elections;
who can be anyone who applies during the first
week of this semester. To make it easier for you,
all the information will be sent to your PC email
address. Other instructions, concerning elec-
tions will be mentioned by the lecturers of PC
during the first week and will be mentioned in the
video news of Students United, so stay tuned.

The other day I found a few minutes to get to know one of Prague
