Explain and demonstrate the use of tally marks.
Provide students with mini whiteboards and textas.
State a number and students represent it as tally marks on their whiteboards.
This activity should be done as a whole class on the floor so that instant
feedback can be given to students’ attempts.
As a whole class, draw counters out of a container one at a time and record
the results of the different colours in a data display using tally marks.
Discuss the findings of the data display.

Discuss what information we can gather from data


Students to use tally marks to record the types of pets everyone has in the
class. Using this information, students are to make a bar graph
Students to decide how they are going to label each part of the graph
Pose questions such as:
What animal was the most popular?
What animal was the least popular?
What were some pets not recorded?

Students to play interactive whiteboard game on picture graphs

Students use tally marks to record the types fruit each student had for crunch
and sip.
Divide students into groups.
Each group is to make a picture graph, using representations of fruit and
decide how they will name each axis of their graph.
Pose questions such as:
Which fruit was the most common?
Which fruit was the least common?

In small groups, decide what their data display will be about. E.g. favourite
television program, what pets they have, etc.
Each group creates their own question/s to ask other members of the class in
order to obtain the information they need.
They record the results using tally marks.
Represent this information as a data display.
Discuss the findings.

Which one was the most popular?
Which one was the least popular?
Were any results the same?
