engineering, manufacturing, assembly, factory testing, inspection, packing,
forwarding, transportation, erection, site testing, Commissioning & Handover of a
Model Substation at WZPDCL Training Institute to impart training on Operation &
Maintenance of 33 kV Substations

 BASIC ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS-33 kV MODEL SUBSTATION

Model Substation is envisaged to provide

2) Familiarise the participants on various

3) Basic Design Concepts
4) Safe and Efficient Operation
5) Fault Finding and Rectifications

Power, Control, Protection & Automation Equipment will be supplied & Erected in accordance with
the Bill Of Quantities and the concept for the same would be as indicated in the Single Line Diagram
& System Architecture

A Model Substation will be designed and constructed as per the single line diagram, however for safe
operation of system, power circuit will not be connected to supply. AC & DC control supply for all the
equipment will be provided from respective distribution boards.

To ensure the safety of personnel a replica of this substation is conceptualized using LV switchgears
as shown in single line diagram with document no. xxx-xxx-xxx. All the circuit breakers are replicated
using power contactors. The power contactors are interlocked with respective bay circuit breakers.
This test bench is powered up using 3 phase 415 V variable supply. All the CTs used for metering &
protection are of metering class with CT ratio 1:1. CT & PTs output from this circuit is used for
protection & metering and are connected to respective feeder bay relays.

33kV substation will have auxiliary DC supply from battery chargers and battery bank as a backup.
Auxiliary AC supply will be derived from ACDB. Power from variac will energize the transformer T1 (
415/138V). The secondary of transformer is connected to variable load bank (R3) to simulate the load
current.

The resistor R1 is used for simulating differential protection and R2 is used for simulating REF
protection.

A Specially Designed Control Desk will be deployed to

1) Manually Operate the Substation in Simulation Mode

2) To Simulate various fault conditions and to test the protections system operation
3) To vary the Resistive/Inductive load to simulate various loading conditions &
Protections systems response

 A Specially Designed Desk top PC With required HMI Software shall be deployed for simulating the
functions of Substation Automations System

This system shall be hooked up with the protections relays of 33 kV & 11 kV IEDs over IEC61850
protocol and meters over Modbus Protocol

The Desk top PC shall also be loaded with Relay & Meter programming Software, so as to provide a
facility for online setting of Relay & Meter parameters
