*It is recommended that the Student Learning Objectives (SLO) checklist be used for developing an
SLO. For an SLO to be approved, all criteria in the checklist must be met.
*Please see Measuring Student Growth: An Introduction to Student Learning Objectives for a
definition of each type of SLO.
Student Population
Identify the students included in the SLO and explain why the students were selected.
I have 25 students in my class – none of them are ELLs or have IEPs. My students came in reading at grade
level. All students in my class are included in the SLO.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1
Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate
understanding of key details in a text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.2
Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their
central message, lesson, or moral.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.3
Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.
☐ Aligns to specific state-adopted standards.
☐ Represents the big ideas or domains of content taught during the interval of instruction.
☐ Flows to school improvement plan where applicable.
In the fall of 2018 all students took the NWEA reading test. 16% of students performed in the lowest
percentile (< 21) on the Literary Text: Key Ideas and Details category.
☐ Identifies sources of information about students (e.g., test scores from prior years, trend data, results of pre-
assessments).
☐ Summarizes student data to demonstrate specific student need for the learning content tied to specific standards
(including strengths and weaknesses).
Assessment
Name the instrument that will be used to measure the outcome of the SLO.
I will use NWEA MAP reading test to measure the outcome of my SLO. I will look at the amount of
students that scored in the lowest percentile for Literary Text: Key Ideas and Details.
☐ Identifies assessments that have been reviewed by content experts to effectively measure course content and
reliably measure student learning as intended.
☐ Selects measures with sufficient “stretch” so that all students may demonstrate learning, or identifies
supplemental assessments to cover all ability levels.
☐ Provides a plan for combining multiple assessments if multiple summative assessments are used.
Growth Targets
Identify the quantitative targets that will demonstrate achievement of the SLO. Each student included in
the SLO should have a growth target.
In the spring of 2019, the percentage of students performing in the lowest percentile of the Literary Text:
Key Ideas and Details category will reduce by at least 50% compared to their fall scores.
Our school is implementing small group instruction and other essential literacy practices to ensure that
students are able to grow in reading and literacy, and we have an overall goal as a school to improve literacy
in the lower grades.
I will conduct book studies, do interactive read alouds, and allow my students free choice reading with
books that are interesting to them as well as developmentally appropriate to encourage growth in literacy
in general. I will monitor student progress by using weekly/biweekly comprehension assessments. I will
also focus on asking higher-order thinking questions so that students are better prepared to differentiate
between main ideas and details.
