The Plum Pudding Bird

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

• Scraps of medium brown fabric for the body and the wings
• Scrap of red or red spot fabric for the tummy and the hat
• Scrap of light cream fabric for the hat brim
• Scrap of light gold fabric for the beak
• Stranded embroidery thread to match or contrast with the
appliqué
• A small amount of 8-ply black or dark brown yarn for the
legs
• A pre-made pompom or cream and red yarn to make your
own pompom
• 30cm of red yarn for the hanging thread/loop
• Two small buttons for the eyes
• Two small beads for the legs
• One small silver bead for the hanging thread/loop
• Scraps of sewable fusible webbing
• Polyester fibre fill
• Template plastic or thin card
• 2B pencil
• Stuffing tool, chopstick or wooden skewer (use the blunt end)
• A darning or tapestry needle with an eye big enough to thread yarn through

• Buttons and beads are not suitable for children under three (3) years of age - please
substitute satin stitch or appliqué for the eyes and tie knots for the legs & hanging sleeve)

1. Trace one round body shape onto template plastic or thin cardboard. Cut the body shape out
neatly on the lines with craft scissors.
2. Place the body template on the wrong side of the medium brown fabric. Using the 2B pencil
trace around the template twice on the wrong side of the fabric. Cut them out on the trace
lines.
3. Trace two wing shapes, one tummy shape, one beak shape, two hat shapes and two hat brim
shapes onto the paper side of the fusible webbing with a pencil, leaving 1/2in between each
shape. Cut them out roughly 1/4in beyond the lines using craft scissors. Fuse the wings to
the wrong side of the medium brown fabric, the tummy and hats to the wrong side of the
red/red spot fabric, the beak to the wrong side of the light gold fabric, and the hat brims to the
wrong side of the light cream fabric using a hot, dry iron, then cut them out carefully on the
lines with craft scissors.
4. Peel the backing paper off the appliqué shapes and using the
pattern template as a guide, fuse the wings, the tummy, the beak,
the hat and the hat brim to one body shape; and a hat and hat
brim to the back body shape. Blanket-stitch around the appliqué
shapes using two strands of matching embroidery thread. I’ve
used metallic gold thread for the edge of the wings and the little
cross-stitches to make them sparkle.
5. Sew the two buttons near the top of the beak for the eyes.
6. Thread two 15cm strands of black yarn (from the wrong side
through to the right side) on one side of the bottom of the tummy
of the Plum Pudding bird for the legs. Tie a knot in
both threads approximately 1 3/4in from the top. Thread a black
bead on to the threads then tie another knot to secure the bead.
Trim the remaining length of yarn to make little feet. Repeat for
the other side.
7. Lay the Plum Pudding Bird right side up on a firm surface with the legs tucked up towards
the centre of the bird so they don’t get caught in the seam. Lay the back of the bird right side
down on top of this and sew the body back to the front with right sides facing, leaving an
opening where indicated on the pattern. Clip the curves then carefully turn the bird right side
out.
8. Stuff the Plum Pudding Bird firmly with polyester filling using a stuffing tool or the blunt end
of a wooden skewer. Whip-stitch or ladder-stitch the opening closed.
9. Sew a pre-made, or your own pompom, to the top of the hat, securing it well.
10. Thread the yarn for the hanging thread/loop through the bird at the back of the hat (near the
bottom of the pompom) and bring to the two ends together. Tie a knot in the yarn
approximately 2in - 3in from the top of the bird’s head. Thread the silver bead onto the yarn
and tie another knot to
secure the bead.
11. Makes as many Plum
Pudding Birds as you
like and rejoice in the
fact that they won’t have
any effect whatsoever on
your waistline!
