Focus: Teaching English Education to High School Students

a. Title: “I Just Don’t Get It”: Teachers’ and Students’ Conceptions of Confusion and
Implications for Teaching and Learning in the High School English Classroom

d. Summary: This article focuses on confusion in the English classroom and how to use it to
the advantage of both teachers and students. It states that simple confusions about
procedures may be signs of deeper confusions towards the concepts of English. The article
urges teachers to hone their skills in identifying whenever a student is confused so that the
teacher can explain it better. The article believes that confusion is not a problem to be
solved, but it is an opportunity for teachers to better understand students’ thinking. It is also
an opportunity for the student to gain a deeper understanding through thorough teaching of
the subject. This study was done through writing tasks. And, the conclusions of this study
are more prone to appear in English classrooms.

or conform?

d. Summary: This dissertation discusses the role of active citizenship within an educational
classroom. It focuses on six English secondary school teachers to showcase how core
citizenship issues are reflected within the educational practice. The study looks at both how
students are active and the teachers’ understanding. The article argues that with the current
education policy in schools, the schools will not accommodate to teach citizenship directly.
It calls for teachers to fully understand the value of citizenship. Once teachers have an
understanding, they can then reinforce the values of citizenship through writing and English
classes.
