Just take a minute in understanding the difference between hearing and listening.
For instance you are watching a news channel and they tell you that
If you can repeat the words of the speaker it means you have heard what has been
said.
(ii) Understanding: includes the fact that you have understood the thing that is said by
the speaker. It is your understanding of the report presented in the T.V.
(iii) Judging: it is your part of understanding what you can assume about these three
casualties. You might think that: it might be an accident, a bank robbery, a fight
etc
Listening is process that involves all the attention of the mind to the speaker.
Active Listening is a communication tool that demands listener’s attention while hearing
the words of speaker and giving a prompt feedback when asking something about the topic.
Active listening is a way of listening and responding to another person that improves mutual
understanding. Listener can paraphrase and summarize the whole topic in his/her own words.
Throughout one’s life one has to listen and develop his own understanding about the thing he has
heard. It means we hear what the people are really saying. Listening is very important skill you
can have to develop your relations with others and it also has a sound impact on your job.
To obtain information.
To amuse yourself.
To learn.
To understand.
A Research tells that we remember only 25 to 50 percent what we hear. Active listening
is not only just hearing or remembering the words of the speaker but most importantly it is an
understanding of the message or theme of the speaker. In order to achieve this fact you should
not be distracted by the surroundings or the things happening around you. You cannot allow
yourself to get bored of the voice and words of the speaker. To enhance your listening skills you
must encourage the speaker to show that you are listening. Don’t sit dull or look passive as it will
create restlessness in the speaker. Nodding your head and a simple “Hmm- Hmm” can encourage
the speaker that his message is being understood by the audience. These acknowledgements
allow a speaker to continue speaking without any hesitation rather he gets confidence.
