FIGURES FROM CIVIL ENGINEER

Civil engineer consider to be the one that makes a country good in

infrastructure, like roads, buildings, and dam. Some of them considered


to be a figure in civil engineer itself because of their action or invention to

make civil engineer better than before. Here are some of figures in civil
engineer.

1. John Smeaton

John Smeaton was born in Austhorpe, Leeds, England on 8th June

1724. He was an English civil engineer and known as ‘Father of Civil


Engineering’. During his career, he emgineered on a constuction in a

various canals, bridges, and harbors. One of his famous work is the
construction of the lighthouse on Eddystone Rock from 1756 to 1759.

He used a term of ‘Civil Engineer’ to distinguish from military


engineer. He died on 28th October 1792 due to a stroke.

2. Alexandre Gustave Eiffel


Alexandre Gustave Eiffel was born in Dijon, Côte-d’Or, France on
15th December 1832. He was a French civil engineer and an architect

was known as ‘the magician of iron’. During his career, his reputation
in architect and civil engineer made him got more project outside

France and he was design the interior metallic structure of ‘Statue of


Liberty’ in Liberty Island, New York. His most famous masterpiece was

‘Eiffel Tower’ that built in 1887-1889. He died on 27th December

1923.

3. George Stephenson
George Stephenson was born in Wylam on 9th June 1781. He was

a British inventor who invented the first locomotive and railways.


Because of that he referred as ‘Father of Railways’. In 1814,

Stephenson invent the first locomotive and in 1820, he was entrusted


in an experiment of 8-mile railway in Hetton Colliery Railway. After

the first invention in railways and locomotive, he was appointed as an


engineer for Stockton and Darlington Railways, Liverpool and

Manchester Railway. The decade between 1838 and 1848, he was


flooded with requests from railways across the world. He died on 12th

August 1848 due to Pleurisy.

4. Ir. Soekarno

Soekarno was born in Surabaya on 6th June 1901. He was known


as the First President of Indonesia. He was graduated from civil

engineering Institut Teknologi Bandung. He contributed an idea to


renovate Masjid Al-Haram when he was hajj pilgrimage and give the

idea to Saudi Arabia Ministry. He died on 21st June 1970 in Jakarta.

5. Dr. Ir. Tjokorda Raka Sukawati


Tjokorda Raka Sukawati was born in Ubud Gianyar, Denpasar on
3rd May 1931. He was an Indonesian civil engineer and known as an

inventor of ‘Sosrobahu Technique’. Sosrobahu technique is a road


construction technique that use in flyover road. Tjokorda found this

technique because of the problem in Jakarta that has a lot of traffic


congestion.

6. Prof. Ir. R.M. Sedyatmo


Sedyatmo was born in Karanganyar, Indonesia in 1909. He was an

Indonesian civil engineer and inventor of ‘Pondasi Cakar Ayam’ in


1962. His invention was firstly used in Polonia Airport and

Soekarno-Hatta Airport. During his career, he also engineered


Jatiluhur Dam and a concept of Suramadu bridge. He died in 1984

and burried in Karanganyar.

7. Prof.Dr.Ir. Roosseno

Roosseno was born in Madiun, Indonesia on 2 nd August 1908. He

was an Indonesian civil engineer and known as ‘Father of Indonesian


Concrete’. He also served as Dean in Faculty of Technique Universitas

Indonesia, a professor in Faculty of Tecnique Institut Teknologi


Bandung, and conducted a Borobudur rehabilitation. He died on 15th

June 1996 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
