The Pen is Mightier than the Sword

Why is the phrase so important? Why has it always been true throughout history? It’s not
supposed to taken literally, of course, but there is some meaning behind this saying.
Writing in and of itself seems mundane enough, after all it's just putting words out on paper,
but at the same time, it’s much more than that. It’s the idea in them, the spark that ignites the brain
and lights up synapses all over, causing thought and imagination. It causes thought and consideration,
it opens up something in our primitive minds that distinguishes us from every other beast on Earth.
Writing isn’t just to tell a story, it's a gateway into other worlds, it's a test of the mind that beckons us
to wonder. That's what makes writing so powerful, an idea begins with a pen on a paper, whole
societies and ideologies have formed from just this simple process.
Writing is very critical to who we are as humans, take that away and society begins to
crumble, individualism and free thinking goes away. In books like Fahrenheit 451 and 1984 we see
this in action, we see worlds where writing is downright illegal and how it affects society as a whole.
We see nations where there is no thought, there is no individuality, everyone is put in one big box
and its makes us the reader feel uneasy. These books aren’t just written to make you feel
uncomfortable, they serve as a warning, a glimpse into what life is without writing, they really make
you think about why people write.
You read a book and you are given the opportunity yo make whatever you want out of the
text, writing isn’t a just a way to provide information, it's a roadmap that you work alongside with the
writer to form world’s and narratives. And the ability to wield a pen and do these kinds of things
gives you the most powerful weapon imaginable. Words and ideas are eternal, so really you aren’t
just making marks on a paper, you’re making marks on the world where your words can be read and
travel through the minds and souls of people. Shakespeare, Hemingway, Dickens, their works
transcend their mortal bodies and become much bigger than who they are. They touch the minds of
people from all kinds of generations and give them a chance to step out of reality for a bit and
experience world’s they have put together. People write not because they want to tell a story, they
write to make you think, to make you ponder and engross you in your own mind and explore.
Without this we become mundane, we are no different than a weed growing between the cracks of a
sidewalk. This is why we write, to make others think.
