SENTENCE – a group of words that has complete thought or idea.

TYPES OF SENTENCES ACCORDING TO STRUCTURE

Study the following sentences:

1. She took the book away.
2. The fate of the two insects interested me greatly.
3. Lincoln wanted fish and chips but Amelia wanted pizza.
4. I like playing basketball, and my brother likes playing tennis.

Notice that the sentences are varied. Some are short and some are long.

SENTENCE STRUCTURE is the grammatical arrangement of words in a sentences.

1. Simple sentence- A simple sentence contains at least one subject and one
predicate. It can stand alone as an independent clause.

Subject Predicate
Norman sings.

She will go to Cebu.

My cousin and my classmate are friends.

Ellen reads stories and writes poems.

Sanley and Colleen arrived at the bus station early but

waited until noon for the bus.

"Sanley and Colleen" = compound subject, "arrived" and "waited" =

compound verb

- A simple sentence can also be referred to as an independent clause. It

is referred to as "independent" because it can stand alone. It has one
complete thought.

- The examples above are all simple sentences. Notice that sentence c
contains a compound subject, and sentence d contains a compound
verb. Therefore, simple sentences can also contain compound subjects or
verbs.

- Simple sentences are often short. The use of compound

subjects, compound verbs, prepositional phrases (such as "at the bus
station"), and other elements help lengthen simple sentences, but
simple sentences often are short.

2. Compound Sentence- A compound sentence is composed of two

independent clauses joined by a coordinator. The coordinators are for, and, nor,
but, or, yet, and so.

Independent clause Coordinator Independent clause

Daphne watched a For Leonore was busy.

movie alone,

Lynn cooked pasta, And Trisha prepared salad.

The teacher arrived But The pupils came late.

- Remember that coordinators are always preceded by a comma, except

for very short sentences.
