tion). If the software detects a high difference between
the two measured flow rates, it tries to rinse the tubes of
the proximal flow sensor by applying a small (compen-
sated) flow for a short time to them using the two rinse
valves (28 and 31). If the difference between the two
measured flow rates is still too high after a few rinse cy-
cles, the device alarms accordingly. The green connector
(46) can be used for the connection of an auxiliary pres-
sure measurement line. The auxiliary pressure is meas-
ured by the auxiliary pressure sensor (45). The yellow
connector (44) is the nebulizer pressure outlet. The flow
(8 L/min) for the pneumatic nebulizer is controlled by the
nebulizer valve (43). The nebulizer valve (43) is supplied
by high pressure oxygen.
A relevant advantage of the bellavista pneumatic design
is the low amount of necessary internal connection
tubes. There is one fixed plug connection with an adapter
between the blower unit (1) and the inspiration block (2)
and as less as three connection tubes. One from the O2
supply connector (4) to the inspiration block (2) and two

240 Temperature of blower too high

Warning If the temperature increases fur-
ther, the ventilator could be seri-
ously damaged.

Background information:
Since the blower is cooled with patient air, the following
reasons lead to warming up:
 high inspiratory pressure (blower needs to runs
high)
 small minute volume
 high FiO2 (thus most of the minute volume is O2
and not air through the blower)
There is a bypass cooling-flow exiting bellavista through
a sinter bronze filter at the bottom of the device. This
bypass flow sufficiently cools the blower in any of the
above circumstances. Two reasons however may lead
to over temperature:
 the airflow through the bottom of bellavista is
somehow blocked (unit is placed on some soft sur-
face)
 the sinter bronze filter at the bottom is blocked by
dust or mildew (mostly a consequential effect of a
blocked inlet filter blower)
 the blower filter is blocked

Important It is absolutely necessary to replace

the inlet filter blower monthly (see p.
88) and the sinter bronze filter annu-
ally (part of the Annual Maintenance
procedure, see p. 88)

bellavista automatically protects itself against too high

blower temperature
Alarm limits for alarm 240:
 G2: > 75°
 G3 and above: > 85°
Above this temperature FiO2 is gradually reduced to al-
low more air flowing through the turbine. FiO2 is re-
duced to a minimum of 60%.

12. FAQ

Why can there be a big difference between VtInsp and VtExp measurement?

If you have a big difference between VtInsp and VtExp measurement, please first check the accuracy specifications in the
bellavista user manual:

Monitoring Description Range Resolution Accuracy Accuracy

Parameter Adult/Pediatric Neonatal

VtExp a) Expiratory tidal volume 0…2500 mL 1 ±10 mL ; ±15% b) c) ±1 mL ; ±10% b)

VtInsp Inspiratory tidal volume 0…2500 mL 1 ±10 mL ; ±15% b) c) ±1 mL ; ±10% b)

a)
only available with proximal flow measurement
b)
larger value
c)
with calibrated flow sensor: ±10%

Example: Let’s assume that the real tidal volume (not the measured one) is 500 mL. With adult settings this can lead to
the following valuable ranges of the measured values of bellavista:
VtExp: 500 mL ±15% = 425…575 mL
VtInsp: 500 mL ±15% = 425…575 mL
The worst case valuable difference between the measurement of VtInsp and VtExp in this example can be 150 mL
(575 mL – 425 mL).

Of course it is very unlikely that one measured value is at the very upper tolerance edge while the other one is at the very
lower tolerance edge at the same time.
Anyway, a big difference between the measured values of VtInsp and VtExp can have the following reasons:
 The proximal flow sensor has not been calibrated during the last circuit system test.
General remedy: Perform a circuit system test.
Remedy for neonatal applications: If the installed software version is V4.2.200.0 or lower, please update to
V4.2.300.0 as the neonatal proximal flow sensor calibration in negative (backwards) direction has been introduced
with this software version in order to improve the VtExp measurement. For the neonatal proximal flow sensor calibra-
tion in negative direction, a corresponding neonatal proximal flow sensor calibration adapter is required. This adapter
comes with every new neonatal proximal flow sensor. However, some older or early shipped neonatal proximal flow
sensors may not include this calibration adapter. Therefore, we offer 10 packs of them (see bellavista Product Cata-
logue for details or contact imtmedical customer supprt).
Remedy for G2 bellavistas: Perform a circuit system test after the device has been warmed up for at least 20 min. If
you perform the circuit test within the first 15 min after the start up, the proximal flow sensor will not be calibrated dur-
ing the circuit test because the temperature drifting effects of the sensors are too big at this moment.
 The proximal flow measurement is affected by gas turbulences.
Remedy: If you are using a test lung, don’t connect the test lung directly to the proximal flow sensor because the gas
flow out of the test lung can cause turbulences in the proximal flow sensor which can affect the measurement of
VtExp. Use a tube between the proximal flow sensor and the test lung:

FAQ

 Defective proximal flow sensor.

Remedy: Exchange the proximal flow sensor.

What can I do if my touch screen isn’t working anymore (until G5 with resistive touch screen)?

1. Connect a USB mouse to bellavista (a mouse pointer should appear on the screen and be controllable by the USB
mouse. If this is not the case, restart bellavista and try it again)
2. Use your USB mouse to control bellavista
3. Change to user level Service (password see p. 81)
4. Go to service screen #7 Display / User Input
5. Select Test native colours (a red screen will be displayed)
6. Touch the screen with your finger. If the colour of the screen isn’t changing to green, the touch screen is defective
and needs to be replaced (please contact imtmedical ag technical support). If the colour of the screen is changing to
green, the touch screen is generally working but maybe severely decalibrated. If this is the case, please go on with
the next steps.
7. Touch the screen with your finger repeatedly until you see the service screen Display / User Input again
8. Use your USB mouse again to start the touch screen calibration (see p. 89)

What can I do in case of too low O2 dosing / measurement?

See section O2 Trouble Shooting (p. 85).

What can I do if the circuit system test keeps failing?

Whenever the circuit system test fails, check the full external periphery (bacteria filter, circuit system, humidifier chamber,
proximal flow sensor, exhalation valve) as well as the integrated exhalation valve including its membrane (diaphragm).
Try it with a completely different periphery, if possible. If the circuit system abort message is “High Leak”, carefully check
if the O2 sensor is tightly screwed-in and not damaged (e. g. cracked). If all this doesn’t help, proceed as follows:
1. Disconnect all external tubing
2. Restart the machine
3. Change to user level Service (password see p. 81)
4. Go to service screen #2 ADCs
5. Take a screenshot
6. Download the log files
7. Send the log files together with the information that you have already tried it with different periphery to imtmedical ag
technical support

127
How can I force-quit / force-shut-down the machine?

For all bellavista models of hardware generation 5 (G5) and lower, just press and hold the power button for 10 seconds
For all bellavista models of hardware generation 6 (G6) and higher, perform the following sequence:
1. Push and release the power button
2. Wait for minimum 2 seconds and maximum 5 seconds
3. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds
