Water pollution

If you remember the famous Exxon Valdez case, you know how
damaging oil can be when spilled into water. But oil is not the only culprit.
Water pollution is one of the main forms of pollution. It is the
contamination of water bodies. Water pollution is a major global problem
which requires ongoing evaluation and revision of water resources policy
at all levels. It has been suggested that it is the leading worldwide cause
of deaths and disease and that it accounts for the deaths of more than
14,000 people per day.

Water is typically referred to as polluted when it is impaired by

anthropogenic contaminants and either does not support a human use.
Health effects of drinking or swimming in unclean water can cause
vomiting or diarrhoea, a sick stomach, skin rashes and even cancer.
We can reduce such problems by using non-toxic products, refrain from
throwing litter into streams, rivers lakes and seas, using environment-
friendly house-hold products etc. Avoiding the pollution of water is one of
our responsibilities.
